  • Great little unit after some tweaking
Size: 5000 BTU Style: AC Only
I had a central unit scare in the summer peak (luckily just a blown fuse that I was able to locate in the air handler), and pulled the trigger on two of these units, a 10K BTU and a 5K BTU. I was extremely pleased with the 10K unit. It can get a little loud when it calls for max cool because it blows some serious air. The 5K unit, I was not pleased so much. To make a long story short, it wouldn't adequately cool my bedroom even on max cool. It probably would have, but it would short cycle (turn on, then off rapidly). Often times the short cycle was so quick it would strain to restart the compressor and sometimes give up starting it and kick back to fan. I pulled the front cover and and found the thermostat sensor wire in contact with the evaporator coil. I carefully pulled the wire off the coil, and that cured all the issues. That wire behind the filer should be in front of, but not touching the coil. If it is in contact with the coil it will make the unit think the room is colder than it really is when the compressor is on calling for it to turn it off. The wire will then quickly reach room temperature causing it to turn the compressor back on, and repeat. It will never cool the room to the thermostat's actual setting. So out of the box I was really disappointed, but once this minor factory issue was resolved it turned out to be a pretty decent little unit. It no longer short cycles, and is able to adequately cool my bedroom without the need to set it to max cool. The gurgling noise it makes as the compressor kicks in is a little annoying, but at this price point I don't expect whisper quiet operation. The 10K unit I have doesn't make the gurgling sound that I can tell, but it moves so much more air it may just not be noticeable. Overall, the for price point I am satisfied with my purchase. ... show more

  • Utilitarian and punches above its weight.
Size: 5000 BTU Style: AC Only
We had our 25000 BTU unit fail at the end of August and we were heading into a weeklong September heatwave of 90+ days. We just needed something to get us a week or two and I picked up a couple of these 5k BTU units to cool a bedroom and take the edge off of our (well insulated) ~1000 sq foot 1st floor. First impression... it's really small...2 knobs... no buttons... no remote... no wifi... no connectivity... "explosive refrigerant" warning label... Except that last thing, I'm perfectly fine with the rest of that. Does it work? We installed them at opposite ends of the bottom floor, where we spend 99% of our time and it has more than kept up. The ~225 sq foot bedroom with 7.5 foot ceiling with the AC cranked comes in at a chilly 58 degrees with the door closed for about 6 hours... open the door and you're in the 66 degree area by 8PM. They're working so well, that I just turn off the other AC overnight and still have that side of the house below 70 degrees at 7PM on a 95 degree day. The middle of the house also holds the 70 degree mark. It doesn't cool the 2nd floor as the 25k unit did, but we're not up there anymore, anyway. It gets to be in the mid 80s by evening up there, so I pull down the double hung windows from the top to let that heat escape overnight before buttoning it up in the morning. My next concern is energy efficiency... more specifically, cost. Using a watt meter, these units average about 440 watts with them on full blast. With 90+ degree days, 1 running 24 hours and the other about 16, that's 40 x .44kwh = 17.6kwh/day. That translates to about $3/day under current electricity prices... which is less than what my 25k unit was doing to us. I can't say what this punishment will do to the units' longevity, so that will be an open question... but thus far, I'm really impressed by the simplicity, energy usage, and performance. ... show more

  • Still debating this model
Size: 5000 BTU Style: AC Only
I bought this unit for my small bedroom, even though I have central AC b/c I sleep hot, and it DOES cool, amazingly; however, I didn't do much research on window units and did not know these newer models don't have a "drain" hole or plug. So, basically, the built up water/condensation gets thrown around to cool the coils (or something like that), and this is supposed to make the unit run more efficiently. But, when the water really builds, it sounds like there is a tsunami inside the unit....think the movie "The Perfect Storm". The noise actually kept me from sleeping. I have figured out how to fix this so far - I run the unit fan on "high" until the water evaporates. So far, after about 4 days, I have not had the horrible sound, but I expect it to come again, any day. I live in FL where it's extremely humid, so if you live in a humid climate, you may wanna go with something that drains. So my 4 stars are really 3 1/2. (I also assume at some point I'll need to get into the thing to clean it. It has styrofoam inside, but darned if I can figure out how I am gonna do that). ... show more
