  • good quality output and pretty fast, seems versatile on what media it will take
Style: New: HL-L8260CDW
The print quality is very good. It's sharp and clean. I even printed some photos and they came out very nice. It takes maybe 30 seconds to warm up but once it does it can spit out several pages a second I think. (I haven't time it.) It's noticably slower when you print duplex but still pretty good. I've run some light cardstock (like business cards) through it, and printed on mailing lables, and both have worked quite nicely. You can open a back door on the printer so that the paper has a straight paper path or close to, which can be a big help with thicker paper. The preferences screen is pretty intuitive and easy to use. I originally set it up to use an ethernet connection but then I decided it would be more convenient to have it in another room, so I re-installed it to use WiFi. Both worked very nicely. I do have a minor annoying problem that on one of my computers its showing up in Brother's utility program twice, I presume once as ethernet and once as Wifi, and I'm not sure how to fix that. But the only reason to really get into the utility is to check toner levels and if you have connection problems. The only problems I've had are: 1. I was getting a vertical black line when it first started up, which would then fade after printing a few pages. I contacted tech support and they said this was likely due to a dirty corona wire, they directed me to a page on how to clean it, and indeed that fixed the problem with a few minutes of effort. 2. I had one time that one of my computers couldn't talk to the printer. I rebooted the computer and then everything was fine and I've had no trouble since. So I don't know if that was just a one-time fluke or what. I've only owned the printer for a few weeks so I can't say anything about long-term reliability. I had that one tech support issue I mentioned above, I contacted them by leaving a message on their web site, and they responded in about a day with a solution that worked. So tech support seemed pretty good. ... show more

  • Terrific so far- purchased March 2023
Style: New: HL-L8260CDW
I purchased this printer in March 2023 for my home office. I'm a professional roadway and traffic engineer and work from home most of the time. I also have a HP inkjet that can handle 11"x17" (tabloid size) prints which I need to print on occasion (this Brother laser can't do 11"x17"). I just replaced all four toner cartridges at once (black, cyan, magenta, yellow) for the first time, so it went a year and a half on the cartridges it came with. It only took 10 minutes to do and it was super easy to change them, as easy as a laser printer can get. There have been no issues so far, and it also connects wirelessly to both my home desktop and work laptop with no problems at all. ... show more

  • Good but not great
Style: New: HL-L8260CDW
Prints ok. Wired network took me a while to setup, there are many things to turn-off and on. Not very happy with print quality - the contrasts are not great. Prints fairly fast and quiet.

  • Fabulous Customer Service. Great printer.
Style: New: HL-L8260CDW
I received this printer and it is bigger than I anticipated but considering I've never owned a color laser printer before, it's not surprising that it is bigger than my old b&w laser. Anyway. It's a hefty piece of machinery but actually very compact for what it does. Very sleek and streamlined. It has great features. And was very easy to set up, even without using the CD that comes with it (I don't have a CD player in my laptop so I just followed the instructions to download what I needed). I was also able to easily connect it to the Wifi without using a cable. There was a problem with the duplex feature that I couldn't figure out so I used the Customer Service chat feature on the Brother website and the person on the other end was fabulous. VERY helpful and thorough - understood the problem and seemed to know what he was talking about. I was completely happy when we were done. ... show more

  • A laser printer that strong-arms you into buying the manufacturer's cartridges. ZERO STARS!!!
Style: New: HL-L8260CDW
Though physically bigger than I expected, the build and output quality is amazing. My only gripe is that I've been unable to find any way to emulate backwards compatibility with Windows XP. Yes, I know that XP is obsolete, but that doesn't mean I don't have an old laptop on my network that wouldn't benefit from a compatibility setting. For example, maybe this device can emulate an HP LaserJet and XP wouldn't know the difference? Fantastic! Might I loose some functionality? Sure, I'm good with that. But it is what it is, and the lack of Windows XP support *does not* take away from the product. This printer's settings allowed for an option called something like "Toner Saver", and I'll pass. If I wanted faded output, I'll use my inkjet printer on draft. Granted, it's nice that Brother gave that option to us, but again, no thank you. On the other hand, they offer a mode called something like "Quiet Mode", which after pouring through documentation can be translated to: "Slow Printing Speed". This is NOT a gripe or complaint, and in fact for my home (as compared to office or corporate) use, slow printing is fine with me, as I know that if I need to print a large job, I can always change this default setting. The bottom line for this setting is that I appreciate Brother giving it to me, and I'll use it. One quirk I found is that the unit cannot provide WiFi and LAN access at the same time. Granted, there is probably a very good technical reason, but I wish it could anyway. So yes, having played with this unit for a couple of days, printing out near photo-quality images (the printer doesn't say that it CAN print photo quality), and just kicking the tires as they say, I'm happy with the product, and would recommend it. UPDATE 6/9/2017: Brother sent me the following answer about Windows XP compatibility: "Your machine is PCL6 compatible so it can use any of the HP LaserJet Drivers (2-6) pre-installed with Windows for basic printing on Windows XP." Indeed it works when connected via USB with a driver selection of HP LaserJet 6L. It doesn't print color and no duplexing capabily, but this is great! I'll play with other drivers to see if I can find one that supports color, but as I purchased this item to replace my old HP LaserJet 4Plus (which wasn't color), I'm back where I was, with newer machines giving me the full potential of this printer. A big THANKS to Brother technical support!!! UPDATE 6/28/2017 - I've got two problems, one rather fatal (that I'm handling through Amazon), and one technical, that as of this update cannot be resolved by Brother. An Amazon user posted a question about the ability to reset the toner cartridges when either replaced with third-party sellers, or simply being refilled by oneself. Brother's answer was simple: YOU CANT That makes me angry because not only are they "calculating" toner usage (meaning not by measuring how much toner you have left, but only based on their perception of how much you might have used), but implementing two significant customer "blocks": 1) The "Starter" cartridges are page-limited, and once you pass the programmed limit (regardless of how much toner is in the cartridge), you will never be able to use the "Starter" cartridge again. Forget you Brother!!!! 2) The calculation process continues for every cartridge you install in the future, and that totally ticks me off. Yea, I know they make more money on the cartridges than the printer, but that's a business model I'm not willing to be part of (a point for the CEO of Brother to listen to). So, if you want a printer that is going to strong-arm you into buying their toner cartridges (regardless of whether they have more print capability or not), than buy this printer. But if Brother tells me there is some other way to make the best of what otherwise is a great printer, I'm willing to both listen and update this review. ... show more
