  • Needed
I wish the instructions were a little clearer.

  • Necessary for fermenting...
If you're making beer, wine, or mead, you need a hydrometer. Period. This is an excellent buy, and absolutely necessary in order to accurately determine whether a ferment is stalled, or complete... as well as to determine the ABV of a completed ferment.

  • Update
My original review said there was no cap on the hydrometer storage tube. I found it in the foam packing. Must have fallen off. I’m so happy with this kit. Five stars!!

  • Essential for wine & mead!
Bought this almost a year ago for homebrewing wine and mead. I'm new to brewing, so this is my first hydrometer. Very happy with this purchase! All glass, so easy to sanitize. Scales are easy to read. Accurate and consistent. Original box has kept it nice and safe. When the time comes to replace my hydrometer,, I'll definitely re-order the same model : ) ... show more

A pleasant experience.

  • Almost perfect
This meter is highly accurate and easy to read. Unfortunately, it was also not straight. If using the supplied beaker for measuring, the meter rubs on the side and sticks because it can't float straight. This is easily verified by inspecting the large wobble while rolling the meter on a flat surface. ... show more

  • Beautiful tool - highly recommended!
This has to be one of the finest pieces of measuring glassware that I've received. Even after being banged up in shipping (see box photo), it survived intact. The test cylinder is *heavy* borosilicate glass (i.e., Pyrex). I was surprised when I picked it up. It's smooth and strong. With the bumper, this will probably last me forever. The hydrometer is comfortably heavy too. Obviously it can't be too heavy, but it doesn't feel like it would break without abuse. It clearly shows all 3 scales, Specific Gravity; Percent Sugar by Weight; and Potential Alcohol by Volume. So far, it does appear to be perfectly accurate, once correcting for temperature. Our house is always 72 to 74. There is a char included for exactly this. The Specific Gravity correction is +0.002, and the Brix correction is +0.4. If you lose your instructions, they have them on their site too. ... show more

  • Follow the directions before you make statements about it not reading correctly!
I unpacked the hydrometer and filled it with distilled water (that happened to be in my garage which was 87 degrees). It read about 0.994. I used an online calculator to adjust for heat, and it still read 0.996! So what gives? A few things... the online calc did not automatically adjust to 60 degrees, but 68 (for some reason)... Ok, fine so I set the calibration of the calculator to 60 and now it was at 0.998. Better, but I was hoping not to be on the edge of their advertised tolerance level. So I did the only other thing I knew to do. I chilled the water to exactly 60 degrees, then read it again. SPOT ON at the bottom of the meniscus. Two leessons learned: 1) Calculators are great but no substitute for the real thing. 2) USE DISTILLED WATER. Now I feel confident the hydrometer will give me a nice accurate reading. ... show more
