    • Not too bad when bought at discount price
I'm a carpenter and a superintendent. I bought this primarily to size out large equipment, cranes, boom trucks etc. for jobsites, but I've also used it to survey room sizes quickly, take elevations, check general layout. I will say right off that the carry case is worthless. The tool is covered with a non-skid rubber for gripping, and the nylon case is made extremely tight with elastic with velcro. The two materials fight against each other, and the carry case was an early casualty. The laser came with a super-thin wrist strap, but the plastic on the laser was actually more fragile than the strap and broke immediately. Plan on carrying this in your pocket. The accuracy seems spot-on. I've checked it multiple times out of the box and it matched my tape measurements within 1/8" or less every time. I don't know if I'd trust it for cutting trim, but it could get you close enough to creep up on tight dimensions. It's certainly accurate enough for what I'm doing with it. The software is pretty easy to use. I did read the manual, but I feel that someone could do 80% of what they needed without actually reading it. Having said that, I haven't mastered the indirect measurement yet. This could be my misunderstanding of the manual, or maybe I need to use a tripod to keep the laser steady, but none of my indirect measurements are anywhere close to the actual dimensions. Another drawback is that when surveying the exterior of the building, the red laser dot is difficult to follow the further away your measurement is. This is especially true in broad daylight. In fact, if the sun is directed toward the front of the laser, I usually get an "error" from the interference. Plan on using it before dawn if you are pointing it toward the sky. I usually set the back of the laser against my cheek so I can "sight" down the side like a gun. Spot the laser close, then track it out as far as you have to measure. Your hand will need steadied for long semi-accurate measurements, and you will need to set the laser on something solid or use a tripod for dead-accurate measurements. I've found the app software (MeasureOn) helpful too. It's not the most robust software by any means, but it does allow you to take wireless measurements which is great it you are taking measurements by yourself or without something to "register" the laser against. For example, if you needed to measure a wall from end to end, you can set the laser at one end, walk to the other end and set your phone on the ground to "catch" the laser dot, then touch your screen to take a measurement. The laser comes with card readers to see the laser better, but no stands so they don't help you much if you're by yourself. I haven't tried too many features related to the software other than playing around with it. It does store your information which is a very big plus. Overall I'm very pleased and plan to use this laser often for surveying buildings inside & out, knowing it's limitations and working around them. ... show more

    • Very difficult to use at longer range, and with computers.
There are lots of things I like about this product. It's small and it measures stuff pretty precisely. I would recommend buying the shorter range model, because it's very difficult to hold this thing on target at a longer distance. Because of that difficulty, it takes some time to acquire the target, maybe 30 seconds. Meanwhile, the device has shut off the laser, so you're looking for a laser dot that no longer exists. It's incredibly frustrating. I have to think that the laser switches off to save battery. I would gladly pay five times as much for batteries if the device would work when I needed to work. Second, the Bluetooth feature is deeply flawed, because it only works with their app, and their app sucks. They should just enable the Bluetooth chip to operate as a Bluetooth keyboard, which is a built-in feature of the chip. Barcode scanners all work that way, I don't know why they don't enable it. ... show more

    • You get what you pay for
I bought a cheaper Dewalt one and kept getting errors and it would not measure beyond 20'. I changed the batteries and no difference. So I bit the bullet and bought a top rated one and so far it works very well. I have only used it a few times, but I like it for far.

    • it seemed dumb to not just spend a few MORE few more ...
I was originally going to get the GLM 20, but for a few more dollars decided to double the range and get a GLM35. From there, it seemed dumb to not just spend a few MORE few more dollars for a screen that's actually readable. That sounds silly, but I'm glad I did. This thing is everything I've ever wanted from a laser measure... almost, which I'll get to after these pros: - It's just the right size. Much smaller and it'd be hard to handle or read, but it's easy to keep in my bag so I never forget it. - The interface is great in virtually every way. All the features are easy to get to and use intuitively, including changing settings. - Speaking of which, you can swiftly configure and reconfigure settings however you want (almost... wait for that below, I said). Running dimensions or overall, real time or captured, feet or just inches, from front or back of the meter. This is quick enough to make those worth changing to best suit the moment rather than making do for a few minutes. - That display, man. Not only is clear and bright enough to be instantly legible under any condition, but it rotates with the device, making reading even easier. Which is made possible by: - The inclinometer. Which is great, especially because the device takes advantage of it in so many ways. It can function as a bubble level or as a torpedo, and will give you degrees in the latter. You can even see whether you're holding the meter level while measuring lengths. The cons I teased earlier: - It chews through batteries. I know that's to be expected from a high-powered device, but I can't get through a full day of survey without replacing them. I now keep 2 AAAs in by bag as part of the standard carry since the first time I used it, when I had to ask the client if she had some. Maybe there's nothing to be done about this, but I suspect designing for AAs would have been a better idea since I can feel that there's spare room in the case. - Increments can't be changed from 32nds of an inch. REALLY? Every tape measure ever used has 1/16" hashes, but I've never once seen a contractor, architect, or other professional use them in any situation where they'd use this tool. 1/32" is way beyond the margin of error in any survey. It's fine to show off such precision, but simply asinine to demand to do so - and the product description says the accuracy is +/- 1/16" anyway! This leaves me constantly doing fractional conversions in my head to round up or down, which is a gigantic PITA when you're taking hundreds of measurements in a day. This damn near cancels out the ease afforded by the great screen. I now spend at least as much time doing middle-school math as I used to spend peering and tilting my head. Maybe there'll somehow be a software update, but I wouldn't know how to install it - bluetooth maybe? This alone cost the GLM50 a star. So basic. So, so dumb. I haven't abused it yet, so can't comment on durability. Yet. Nor have I used the more advanced measuring tools such as indirect measuring or volume calculation, and I don't think I ever will use the latter. But such bells and whistles are safely out of the way unless you DO want them, so no problem. I haven't yet been able to get the bluetooth connection to my iPad to do jack for me, either, but that's more a problem with software (by Bosch and others) than with this device. ... show more

    • Perfect and accurate
The distance meter is perfect , performance well and as advertised. However, I have not tested the bluetooth connectivity and functions in real life scenarios.
