  • An Essential Guide To Book Titles
It was Shakespeare who coined the phrase, “What’s in a name?” When it comes to the naming or titling a book, as veteran marketing expert and book publicist extraordinaire Scott Lorenz’s “Book Title Generator: Proven Strategies to Name Your Book” makes clear, the answer is more complex than you might think. In fact, Lorenz makes the case that finding the right title for a book means the difference between that book’s success or failure. This book makes a solid case for why books fail or succeed based on years of firsthand experience and real-life examples. The result is an easy to read and essential primer on how to use basic research and insight, provided by Lorenz in a very conversational and understandable manner. Whether you are writing you first or your fifth book, Lorenz presents a step-by-step formula to giving yourself the best chance to get noticed among the thousands released every week. Scott Lorenz, President of Westwind Communications, has been working with authors and entrepreneurs for more than 40 years to help them get publicity in the always changing media world. His firsthand knowledge of what makes a book succeed or fail has helped authors of every imaginable background and genre to receive the attention they so desperately need to stand out from the rest of the pack. In these nine chapters, Lorenz provides the basic building blocks to finding the perfect title for your book “from defining keywords/keyword phrases to discussions of everything from poetry to profanity.” Beginning every chapter with a pertinent quote from bestselling authors, “Book Title Generator” explains how choosing the best possible title to get your book noticed is not as simple or whimsical as it might appear. As he writes, “Some authors want to believe they can make something up, slap it on the cover and leave it at that. Whatever sounds snappy or catchy at the moment should be okay, right? Wrong.” Scott delves deeply into the concept of “discoverability” or as he writes, “doing everything possible to get your book in front of the right prospective readers, forcing them to take notice of you and your message.” Each chapter is dedicated to a distinct facet of this, from selecting the right keywords to wisely using the correct amount of space and mastering the use of emotional words. He also discusses the use of alliteration in book titles, the use of numbers, allusions and idioms and even the benefits of using pen names when warranted. Along the way, Lorenz uses real-life examples from the bestselling books in publishing history to prove his points. He gives examples and offers suggestions for choosing the particular words (and sometimes numbers) to go into your book title. The result is a deeply thoughtful and well-researched excursion into today’s world of book publishing that will give you the ABCs and XYZs of picking the perfect title for that book you have put your heart into. It’s required reading for aspiring and even experienced writers. ... show more

  • Required reading for anyone who writes books! Highly recommend this important resource.
As a writer, one of the more difficult tasks is finding the perfect title for my books! I found Scott Lorenz’s Book Title Generator: Proven Strategies in Naming Your Book to be filled with excellent advice and timely tips. Lorenz, a book publicist who has worked with bestselling authors, offers up-to-date and relevant information, and he convinced me that the success of my books relies heavily on their titles! He provides actual examples, and includes covers with titles to support his argument that a book’s success (or lack of success) is partially based on the strength of the title. This book is a very quick read, and I finished it in one sitting. I highlighted several important nuggets of information, including resources, as I will definitely refer to this book in the future. The chapters are brief yet packed with great advice. The author explores “discoverability,” and points out that authors can’t simply randomly choose a title and expect success. It is far more important to use appropriate keywords, get your book presented to the right audience, and get them to actually notice your book. The title is one of the most important elements (if not THE most important!). Lorenz also explores spacing, word count, using profanity or emotionally-charged words. The author includes information about the use of alliteration, numbers, allusions, and idioms. He also touches on the use of pen names, which I found really interesting. I really appreciated the fact that Lorenz used real examples from the bestselling books to lend strength to his argument. With 40 years of experience, he has the experience and knowledge to easily make his case. This book is an important resource for writers, as it is a well-researched tool based in a solid foundation – with the most current information. Whatever genre, whether you write fiction or non-fiction, whether you are an experienced writer or just starting your first novel - this book will be a helpful tool for you. In fact, I would argue it is required reading for any author who has published (or hopes to write) books. Though this book is easy to understand and some of the concepts seem obvious, Lorenz packages the information perfectly and describes the easy yet critical step of simple research, providing a step-by-step process that will allow ANY author the opportunity to make his/her book stand out among the thousands of books released each month on Amazon. ... show more
