  • Nice Office Laptop
Picked this laptop up to replace a Chromebook. Turns out I REALLY needed desktop software. It's got everything I need to get my work done and I can still use it for multimedia. The X15 is a really nice package for the price. Things this is not: - This is NOT a laptop for gaming - This is NOT a laptop for editing videos - This is NOT a laptop for advanced Photoshop - This is NOT a laptop for rendering in 3D Things this is: - This IS a laptop for office work - This IS a laptop for media consumption - This IS a laptop for web surfing - This IS a laptop that runs Lexia, Canvas, SeeSaw, Prodigy, and other web-based apps for Students. - This IS a Celeron system with integrated Intel HD graphics. Things to like: - Battery life is a lot better than I had hoped. I've used it throughout a day, off and on, and still had battery left when I got home. In one sitting (installing software, playing games, and watching a movie) I used the X15 for over three and a half hours starting at 100% with 40% battery and 2hr 30 min left. Adjust screen brightness and running in Linux, this can easily last most of the day. - Screen is bright and sharp. I did have some light bleed in the lower left hand corner, but it is only noticeable when booting. Viewing angles are very good. Looks great for Netflix and YouTube. - Speakers are AWESOME. This is the first time I've had a laptop that actually sounds really good for videos and music playback. Very impressive. - Metal lid is sturdy and very pretty. Bottom half of the computer is plastic, but it is still comparable to others in this range. It feels professional, for sure. One thing, though, as the screen is pretty heavy, the hinge does tend to drop at extreme angles. The device itself is very portable. - Trackpad is very large and works well. It has all the basic gestures I'm used to. I did find while typing I would sometimes press with my right hand, but it wasn't a big deal. - Keyboard keys are well spaced and rather large for a laptop. Compared to my 14 inch Chromebook, this keyboard is massive. It does take some getting used to, though, and you might experience missed keypresses once in a while until you've used it a few days. Keys have good travel and the overall typing experience is decent. This review was written using this laptop. - Multimedia - Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, CBS All Access, and Disney + streamed perfectly fine in Windows. No issues. Use the Edge browser. Chromium works fine, too...Firefox needs a LOT of resources, though. - The WiFi signal is pretty strong, and I can stream files from my server for viewing very easily with no buffering or lag. Streaming games through Steam, however, wasn't the best experience. Transferring 11GB (the backup of Win10 OS and the Drivers) didn't take long at all. - I/O - Two full size USB, one microHDMI, MicroSD, and a headphone jack. It's not bad, at all. I just wish there was a USB-C port. Luckily I already have adapter cables. Things to dislike: - RAM. If this had double the RAM out of the box, this would be capable of a lot more, especially some light gaming. In regular usage it is absolutely fine, but I love me some Firefox. What I've done so far: I have set up dual boot Windows 10 and Q4OS (KDE Linux). For my uses, I have not added a second hard drive as my sole purpose for this system is to record and edit audio from a microphone, media consumption, and office applications. For my needs, this does exactly what I needed. I can use the software I'm competent with in Windows for work tasks, and then go over to Linux for some games (Minecraft 1.16.5 runs about 30fps by default) and watching my streaming movie services. I went into the BIOS and made a few changes in the settings and am able to get a lot more out of it. Most were set to "Auto" and that means saving power rather than giving performance with a Celeron. Things to note: YouTube works best in Edge when using Windows. Firefox had a lot of issues in Windows, but when using Linux, Firefox was just fine. I prefer Firefox, so I'll likely spend more time in Linux than Windows. Also, Peppermint Ten OS was lightning fast...Just a lot buggier than Q4OS I decided to stick with. ... show more

  • Happy with the Performance for the Price.
The media could not be loaded. I had been looking for an inexpensive notebook for about a month before I happened upon the BMAX brand. As it turns out, they are a company that specializes in affordable laptop and PC units, so I was very interested in what they had to offer. After perusing their selection and comparing units against other models, I settled on a BMAX X15, which offered an i7 intel Celeron processor, 8 GB DDR4 RAM, and a 128 GB SSD. I’m happy to say that I received my unit within several days of ordering. When it arrived, I got to unboxing it and was impressed by the level of care and consideration that was put into its packaging. It comes wrapped inside a kind of book box, which is packaged inside a briefcase box which sat within a larger box and padded with air pillows. After removing X15 from the boxes, I found it within a protective sleeve and coated with several layers of protective plastic. The contents of the package come with the X15 model itself, warranty information and instructions, and a power cord with three different types of adapters to use depending on the region in which a person lives. I selected an AC adapter, connected it to the power box, and plugged it into the wall. Once I powered on the X15, it took 10-15 minutes of setup before it asked us to generate our login information. With that out of the way, we were off and running. The Intel Celeron processor handles mundane tasks like word processing and web searches quite well and was very quick to do just about anything I asked it to thanks to 8 GB of DDR4 RAM. Now that’s all well and good, but I am a gamer at heart, and I wanted to see if BMAX could also play. There is no additional GPU, so graphical resolution is going to come from the lone CPU itself. I installed Steam and downloaded seven or eight lower tier titles that I felt would give it a good test of its’ gaming capabilities, and its’ performance was so-so in that range (Age of Empires, Andromeda, Chess Extra, Fortnite, Object N, Wizards, & Zardy’s Maze). This unit is not going to run any of your brand-new AAA titles on the max graphical settings, but it can handle emulators and lower tier titles without too much fuss. While the 1920x1080 screen displayed the colors of the games without any real trouble, It did display some issues running one of our newer titles, Age of Empires (choppy resolution, slow response), and It also struggled when I tried to capture screens in a couple of titles, but otherwise it did fine with emulators and games the likes of Chess Extra and Andromeda: Rebirth of Humanity. The 128 GB SSD leaves a little bit to be desired as far as space, but I doubt that will be an issue for students or folks who plan to use this as a “study/work first” laptop. The battery life is good and was giving me around two to three hours on average, and about half that while I was gaming. Even though it does run games, I don’t plan to use it to do as such. This will likely be a portable unit that I use for my work obligations, and thusly the SSD should be fine with that consideration. If you are looking for a portable laptop that can handle a lot of the little things, like internet research and word processing applications, the BMAX X15 might just be an ideal candidate for you. Add in the capabilities to run programs the likes of Photoshop and Vegas, and you have a model that can definitely handle the workload. As long as top tier gaming isn’t your aim, the X15 will be able to handle anything you ask of it, without breaking your bank. ... show more
