  • An excellent rechargeble-battery headlamp
Color: Octane
I have owned 7 Petzl & BD headlamps since 2000. I quit using Petzl headamps when they stopped offering an intermittent (flash) mode. I use headlamps for hiking, backpacking, walking in urban areas and working around the yard and on motor vehicles. I've owned a Spot 200, Spot 300, and now a Spot 400, so I am familiar with this product. In the past, I tried Spot headlamps which emitted an uneven, yellow-tinged light which illuminated poorly compared to my lower rated 200-lumen-rated Spot. I see this trend now repeating with the Spot 400. It produces a blue-tinged light which illuminates poorer than one of my flashlights with a more neutral ~5500K white light. BD is compromising an otherwise very well-designed product with inexpensive, mediocre-quality LEDs. I have 8 LED flashlights, and all but the cheapest ones bought directly from a China seller have superior neutral white LEDs. I have ten-year-old $9 flashlights with better LEDs than the Spot 400. To be fair to BD, all headlamps in general seem to have LEDs inferior to those of equally priced flashlights. Apparently the relative complexity, usage and lower output/longer runtime bias of headlamps results in reviews where the actual quality of the light beam produced by the product receives only cursory evaluation. In the flashlight world, users routinely share hi-res photos of the light beam, or so-called beamshots, so that this critical product feature may be scrutinized by others on internet forums. Almost no one does this in the headlamp niche, consequently Chinese manufacturers seem to utilize cheaper, lower quality leds and optics for headlamps. My criticism of Spot led/beam quality aside, I really like the design of the BD Spot headlamp. I like it's features, cost, durability and NiMH battery compatibility (Eneloop Pro 950mah cells highly recommended). I am willing to pay $10-20 more for a similar headlamp with better led and optics which produces a more even beam with neutral white color. Also, I believe it may be beneficial to add current-regulating circuitry to headlamps. In better led flashlights, current regulation yields more consistent light output with longer run time. I think it's time for headlamps to try and catch up to the beam quality and lighting performance one can expect in a similarly-priced flashlight. I have not overlooked the possibility that I got a dud Spot 400. I purchased a second Spot 400, and it's beam is noticeably more blue-tinged than the first sample! The inexpensive leds used in headlamps can vary significantly in tint and beam quality from one sample to the next. Maybe if I buy 2-3 more I could get closer to white output. Please BD, use better white LEDs in your headlamps! No one wants to see by yellowish or blueish light - even out in the backcountry. Finally, it is worth mentioning that controls for modern flashlights and headlamps can be a bit complex. Save your BD Spot headlamp printed manual, and download a PDF version to your phone! You will need it to remember the locking/unlocking sequence, or how to activate the rarely used SOS mode (which works correctly, BTW). Overall this is one of the best NiMH battery powered headlamps one can buy: good illumination despite my LED criticism, long duration, feature rich, comfortable to wear for hours, compact, lightweight, durable, fairly impervious to dust and moisture, and economical. • Headlamp is great, instructions are TERRIBLE
Color: Octane
This headlamp works great, once you figure it out, but the instruction sheet included with it is another example of internationalization gone horribly wrong. Instead of actual instructions, there are a set of badly done line drawings and then 26 different language-specific items directing you to the pictures. So there are no written instructions at all, but there's plenty of legal mumbo-jumbo and ridiculously stupid safety instructions ("don't pour chemicals on your headlamp"). All of this is rendered in a teensy-tiny little type size that is barely readable. The whole thing misses the mark entirely for what it's supposed to do - teach people how to use the device. I'm sure doing it this way saves them money though. Never mind us consumers who have to try to make sense out of the smear marks on paper they've provided in lieu of actual instructions. ... show more

  • All around good product.
Color: Azul
Pros. Super bright beam, red light a plus, easy ops. lockout is nice if you remember that you engaged it. Cons. The wide beam is okay. Still worth the money though.

  • Nice and bright!
Color: Graphite
Great headlamp, the only downside is all the moths and flying insects it attracts that fly into your face.. Other than that nice headlamp.

Head band has 1 buckle on the inside of the head strap which digs into your head. Can’t be reversed. Returned it.

  • disappointed
Color: Octane
I really believe this is a great flashlight, but unfortunately, the flashlight I received did not work correctly out of the box. It flickers erratically back and forth between the settings. I cannot return the flashlight because by the time that I actually received the flashlight, the return window was already closed. My situation is a little different because I currently am working in Brazil as a missionary, so I had the flashlight sent to an U.S.A address and then some friends of my brought it to me here in Brazil. But, now I am stuck with a flashlight that does not work. ... show more
