  • Fantastic Design Makes Up for the Mediocre Power
Style: 40V Cordless Mower Kit
This is a quality product for the price range. I own several 20 volt BLACK+DECKER cordless yard tools and have been really happy with their performance so I bought this mower hoping the batteries were interchangeable. They are not. The batteries that come with this unit (2) are double the size and 40 volts. They take at least four hours to charge out of the box so make sure that is the first thing you do when you receive the package. Set up was ridiculously easy since the unit is shipped 90% assembled already. The shape is impressive and looks like a sleek RC race car except larger (it is the size of a typical mower). The handle to adjust the cutting height is large and easy to use which is good because you will need to start high and slowly work your way down to your desired cutting height (just like the instructions recommend). The unit is very light weight so it was a breeze to maneuver (My kids will be able to take over this chore much sooner)! One battery was able to handle my entire backyard which has a sizeable lawn. There was one area that has been taken over by Tall Fescue which was several inches high. I had to pass over this area at the highest cut-height setting (7) or the engine would quit. I then tried to lower the height to 4 but that was too dramatic a difference and the engine quit. I was able to make another complete pass at 5 before the battery was depleted. I have no doubt that with two batteries I will have no issues mowing my yard in the future. There is a convenient storage compartment on board for the spare battery which is awesome. The power and performance were honestly about a 3-4 range. I still gave it a 5 however because the design and weight or so great and I was able to push this mower with more ease than the self propelled walk behind gasoline mower I used previously. ... show more

  • Batteries make this nearly useless
Style: 40V Cordless Mower Kit
Needing a new lawn mower at the start of COVID, I didn't want to shop in person, so purchased this. The mower itself is lightweight (not surprising, since it's mostly plastic) and maneuverable. Granted it has been over 2 years since I assembled it, but my recollection is that it was straightforward to put together. Unfortunately, a major problem - and what brings my overall rating of this mower to just 1 star - is that the batteries don't last long enough to do the job. My home sits on a quarter-acre lot with a house, shed, driveway, several trees and a garden. If the grass wasn't overgrown, I could mow the yard in 45 minutes with my old corded mower. The description of this mower stated that just one of the two included batteries would last the amount of time I needed to complete cutting my yard's grass. Unfortunately, this was never the case. The original two batteries combined have never lasted the 45 minutes that were promised for one battery. On top of that, only one charger was included, so only a single "round" of mowing could be done at a time. With a charging time of several hours, I often had to wait until the next day to resume mowing. After a couple months of frustration with the above situation I purchased new batteries and a second charger. When I made the purchase, I stuck with Black & Decker batteries. I verified that the voltage, amps, etc. were the same. The batteries also looked identical in the pictures I could see. Unfortunately, when the batteries arrived they were obviously not right for my mower, as the connectors were wrong. Last year I purchased another replacement battery and charger. This battery was stated to have twice the capacity (amp-hours) as the originals. Unfortunately, it also fails to last anywhere close to the 45 minutes (let alone the 90 minutes one would expect) I need to get the job done. At least I can get in two "rounds" of mowing now. Another frustration is that if the grass is overgrown and thick, the mower stalls quite easily. With the battery situation being what it is, this often happens as I need several days to mow my yard. The method I've adopted when dealing with this is to "pop a wheelie" with the mower: Where there is a small patch like this I will just lower the mower onto the patch. Where there is an extended stretch of such grass I mow over it multiple times in order to get it to the desired height. This can extend the time needed to cut the grass quite a lot. When I was younger it seemed that Black & Decker had a pretty good reputation. Unfortunately, this experience, a few others, and some things I've seen & heard from other sources, leads me to conclude that they no longer deserve that reputation. I certainly won't be buying any more of their battery operated tools in the future. Update: At only three years old the starting mechanism failed. I tried to fix it myself, but found that beyond my skill. With the problems mentioned above, I wasn't willing to put more money into having it repaired and bought a replacement from another manufacturer. ... show more

  • Works well, battery life is dissappointing
Style: 40V Cordless Mower Kit
I was hesitant about an electric mower, but I disliked the idea of dealing with gas. I had already purchased some other BLACK+DECKER lawn tools, so I figured I might as well stay on the same battery technology. It's simple to assemble intuitively, although the instruction manual is hard to follow at times. It looks good and works well. I had some thick grass since it was the first cut in the spring. The mower choked a couple times until I raised the height. Worst part from is that the battery life is lower than I expected. I have a quarter acre plot. With 2 batteries I was only able to do half of my lawn and I need to do multiple passes. The batteries also charge quite slowly and they don't charge when hot (like after mowing), so don't expect to juggle 2 batteries back and forth. The price also seems bad in retrospect. For less than $100 more I could have purchased a higher quality brand with a 6Ah battery. BLACK+DECKER charges $95 for another 2Ah battery. 3rd party batteries are cheaper, but it's hard to know whether to trust them. I purchased this in 2024 and I received a 2022 dated mower. Consider this when purchasing since batteries may lose some effectiveness. The batteries that came with the mower seem fine but other BLACK+DECKER yard tools were 2020 dated and the battery only holds 50% energy and the charger was dead. You might be able to identify the age in a store. Amazon will send you whatever they have. I called BLACK+DECKER and they are replacing the charger, although I didn't ask about the battery since I learned that later. ... show more
