I tested this two steps rate ways. 1st was cut open and unrolled. This was super easy to catch a spark (first strike) and burnt with a larger flame. Total burn time like this was 3 min exactly. 2nd way was just fluffing open one end. This was much harder to land a spark in, but didn’t take too many times. This way burned with a smaller flame, but total burn time was 8min 45 sec. I’ll most likely do a hybrid of these two methods. But you really can’t go wrong with these. More expensive than cotton balls and vasoline, but was cleaner, easier to use and burns longer. ... show more

    • Works with a spark, no lighter needed.
Works pretty much as advertised. Used them in the rain and snow with a magnesium fire starter. Instead of using 1 or 2, you might need 3 or 4 per fire, unless your fuel is dry then less will do. I will buy more.

I bought these for overnight/weekend backpacking trips to get a fire going in case conditions weren’t ideal on the trail, I used one to test it out and was pretty impressed. First off, breaking down the plugs is super easy, there is a slight texture to them but it is odorless. Secondly, they take flame/spark extremely well, out of curiosity I used flint instead of a lighter and it took on the first spark to hit it. And last but not least, although i didn’t set a timer, the plug held a good, strong flame about 1 to 1.5 inches tall for about 90 seconds. Extremely happy with this purchase. Also you can fit about 14 of these plugs in an Altoids tin with a BIC lighter as a back up or primary fire kit in your bag. ... show more

I had my doubts when ordering these, I have had other products that did not work. When I received these I took one and followed directions that say to break in half and light the fluffy end. I used a ferro rod and tried to light it. After a few strikes from the ferro rod I had a flame that was a little bigger than a Zippo lighter and lasted about 5 minutes. If I would have had kindling and firewood I could have had a nice fire. These work very well. ... show more

I use these with rod and striker and they light up every time. Have done it in damp areas and snowy areas and burns great. They don’t last as long regarding burn as my sawdust cups but the weight is almost non existent in my hiking ruck.
