  • One day, this will save the day!
Size: 4 Ton (8,000 lb)
Although that day has not yet come, it's clear that this device will one day serve to move something otherwise immovable. Testing it in the garage, it operated smoothly and seems to be built better than a previous come along that I had.

  • Nice economical come-along
Size: 2 Ton
I needed this to do a fence repair by myself. I have a heavy shadowbox fence that had been leaning in several sections for a few months - three posts were rotting away. I played with it awhile first, to see how everything worked, and it was pretty easy after I figured it out. Getting it to release the cable the first time was a little stiff, but much easier on the next one. I was able to use some cable straps I keep in my vehicle, this come-along, and a 3' piece of 2x4 put into the ground at an angle as the anchor to ratchet the fence back to a solid vertical position where I could attach some new 4x4 posts. Solid as a rock now, and managing by myself felt very rewarding (-: ... show more

  • Inept Operators Manual
Size: 2 Ton
Upon receipt looked for the Operators Manual..found a single page with poor picture w/labled parts. Absolutely nothing about the proper operation. O.K. not rocket science...after a half hour of frustration, gave up attempting to release cable. Next day determined that cable was jammed and removed racheting pawl. It then required 3 hands and a hammer to release the cable. Cable release is of poor design requiring undue finger strength. ... show more

  • This thing works, but barely
Size: 2 Ton
I would give this one star if it didn't work at all. I can actually use it, but it is minimally functional, so I give it two stars. First of all, it comes with a piece of paper labeled "Operator's manual" but it's not a manual at all. It has a labeled diagram of parts and a bunch of safety instructions, but zero instructions on how to actually use it. Now, I have never used a cable puller like this before, so I can't say I have any basis for comparison. But I have definitely used all sorts of ratcheting tools and devices, and they all have the same basic mechanism, so I can claim some experience in how this thing OUGHT to work. First problem was figuring out how to release the ratchet so you can play out the cable. There is a release button that unlocks the ratchet, but it's still impossible to pull out any of the cable, even with the ratchet unlocked. If you search on youtube, you can find instructions for a different but similar cable puller, which indicate that you are supposed to change the position of one of the springs in order to release the handle at the same time you unlock the ratchet. How difficult would it have been to include that in the "Operator's manual"? But things don't end there, because knowing that you are supposed to change the position of the spring doesn't tell you which position you are supposed to use for ratcheting and which position for releasing the handle. This could potentially be easy to figure out on your own, except that on THIS particular cable puller, it doesn't actually end up making any difference which position the spring is in. This thing ratchets when you don't want it to, and it fails to ratchet when you do want it to, no matter what position you have everything set in. The only way I could get it to ratchet was by pressing down on the ratchet part of the handle with my thumb. The only way I could get the handle to release was by lifting up on the ratchet part with my thumb (which is not actually that easy to do while you are simultaneously pressing the lock release and trying to pull out some of the cable). So, like I say, with all sorts of contrivance I am eventually able to get this thing to work enough to tighten some fence. But it's impossible for me to believe there aren't better products out there that actually function the way a ratcheting tool is supposed to function. ... show more

  • Absolute GAme Changer
Size: 4 Ton (8,000 lb)
I got my ZTR tractor stuck in the sand next to my carport and I mean stuck. Called a neighbor and had him come over with his lawn tractor and it wouldn't budge. I decided that I needed something I could anchor that had pulling strength so I decided on a come along. I looked at all of them and decided on the Torin Big Red 4 ton. I also got a 10' tow strap. I it to a 4x4 fence post and the tractor and it pulled the tractor out with ease. The Big Red is well made and very easy to use. I highly recommend it. ... show more

  • Just good enough
Size: 4 Ton (8,000 lb)
I purchased the cable puller to pull Mini Cooper on car hauler. I went to release the cable to do another pull, but it wouldn’t release. Finally got it to release and finished pulling the car on the trailer. On another note, the cable doesn’t have the cable release lever as pictured. Decided to keep it because I don’t know if other cable pullers are any better ... show more

  • Read the reviews for help
Size: 2 Ton
So it’s very inexpensive, but the downside is there are no instructions on how to release the cable. Some of it is common sense but the other bit thanks some dexterity, coordination and (for me) some PB blaster to loosen it up. There are some reviews that were helpful. Just read down and find them.
