  • loose ball head - stay away!
Style: Carbon Fiber Size: 2 Series/ 4 Section Kit w/ V1 head
I am so disappointed with this! I don't use my tripod very often, I've maybe used it 6 times since I purchased it... pulled it out to use this weekend and cannot attach my camera body... no matter how tight I make the ball head friction knob, it slips and slides all around under the weight of a 17-55 lens. Are you kidding? The tightest I could twist it to was an 8, but that wasn't enough to lock it. This has not suffered any damage or abuse... unless sitting in the closet while I shoot hand held hurts its feelings. The return/support window closed a little less than a month ago. I will try contacting Benro directly; this was the second one I got from Amazon - the first, a leg fell right off and couldn't be reattached! I thought this was a fairly expensive tripod. Save your money. I loved all the neat things it could do, but holding the camera steady and safely should be priority one. Junk. Here's a followup, about a year later - 2/16/2020. I had sent the tripod back for repairs covered under warranty - shipping out at my cost. They fixed the friction knob, and I realized what caused that to happen was folding the legs up into the true travel position to keep the tripod as small as possible (it makes no sense, but that's the trick), So I simply stopped doing that. Unfortunately, I found myself with no choice but to fold it to fit into a carryon piece of luggage - and guess what? Friction knob is locked tight and the ball head is loose-goosey rendering the tripod once again useless. So I will pay another $30-40 to ship it back wait a few weeks and get the same lemon back again. In my communications with Benro, they said there is no way for me to fix this myself, it must go back to the factory, Otherwise I really like this tripod, but its rather disappointing to get to your destination and find your tripod is just a paperweight that you've lugged cross country for nothing. ... show more

  • Poor Quality All-Around
Style: Carbon Fiber Size: 2 Series/ 5 Section Kit w/ V1 head
While they look nice on the outside, I do NOT recommend either the tripod or ballhead due to multiple quality issues with both items. 1) Tripod Issues: -Shipped to me with a warped leg lock-- specifically, one of the leg joints does not extend/retract smoothly, so it takes some fiddling with the lock each time I extend/retract that particular joint (the other joints and legs were fine). I suspect this is due to a pair of warped white semi-coils underneath the leg lock at issue, which have popped out numerous times in the course of extending/retracting that leg. Not a deal breaker, but very annoying that this happened right out of the box. -Lock for center column started out OK, but after <10 normal uses it is now really difficult to operate. 2) Ballhead Issues: -The main adjustment knob has a very limited range-- it quickly goes from very loose to very tight (and it takes a bit of muscle on my part), but there is no real intermediate tightness setting. This makes incremental adjustments in framing a shot very difficult. -The main adjustment jammed up after <10 normal uses: the ballhead is now permanently stuck in one position and I cannot move it. I'll have to try adding oil, but given the above issues I saw right out of the box, I'm not hopeful. -The tightness dial accompanying the main adjustment knob quickly detached (after <10 normal uses) from whatever was locking it in place underneath, meaning that it spins freely, thereby making it useless for determining the tightness of the ballhead position. Of course, the tightness dial is not critical, since I could in theory simply tighten the main adjustment knob to as far as it will go when I want to lock it, and untighten it to move the ballhead around. But see above bullet re issues with the main adjustment knob. At this point, I could probably say a prayer and still use the ballhead/tripod combo for relatively short single-shot exposures with no wind or any kind of vibration nearby (assuming the locked ballhead position, which I cannot adjust (see above), works for my composition). But forget any kind of more demanding or multi-shot scenario (e.g., focus stacking, exposure blending, pixel shift, etc.). In sum: NOT RECOMMENDED. ... show more
