  • Great Hot Knife
We are pretty new to beekeeping and honey harvesting. The first couple times we uncapped our honey frames to harvest the honey were a bit of a struggle because we were using a regular unheated serrated edge uncapping knife. The electric heated uncapping knife makes it so much easier and quicker to slice through the comb to get to the honey. If you go slowly, the knife just glides through the caps melting them as it goes. We uncapped 18 honey frames with it and it worked just fine. It heats up fairly quickly to a predetermined temperature, there is no adjustment. It would be nice if the knife had some type of built in prop (like some curling irons or heated hair utensils have) or some type of silicone pad included to set the hot knife on while switching out frames to keep it clean and prevent scorching anything. Other than that, it works great for uncapping our honey. ... show more

  • Temperature is all over the place! A razor works better
I wanted this to work, since my little spiny roller was ripping up too much of my comb, but without a thermostat and temperature control, this is far more trouble than it’s worth. The problem is that there’s no thermostat, no on/off switch, no temperature or power indicator, and most importantly, seemingly no temperature regulator! To turn it on, you just plug it in, and seems to just keep getting hotter and hotter until you unplug it. When you unplug it, it cools down quickly and if you’re still uncapping frames, you’ll destroy comb as it starts to tear open the cells as it cools. While hot, it does an ok job, until it gets so hot you can smell the heated wires inside (or something…but it starts to smell very hot!). I switched to using a fancy sourdough lame (ie, a longish straight razor on a bent handle), and that worked even better. ... show more

  • Does not hold temperature under use
It gets hot enough to do the job, but as you push it through the wax, it cools off quickly and ceases to cut efficiently. I ended up tearing up a bunch of comb trying to de-cap some frames, unacceptable.

  • does what it needs to
This is my first year keeping bees, and my group told me I'll need one of these to make honey harvesting easier. It gets hot enough to melt the caps off, and is easy to hold and use. Definitely makes the process easier.

  • Plug in and let it heat up
This uncapping knife is extremely simple to use. Plug it in, let it heat up, and use it. There is no thermostat, so it is set to go. Our honey harvest won't be for another month, so I'll have to return and edit after we've used it. Edit: We did our honey harvest today. The knife heats quickly. It takes less than a minute to be hot enough for uncapping. The lack of thermostat is annoying. The knife cleaned easily and is ready for next year. For hobby beekeepers on a tight budget, this is a very useful tool. ... show more

  • Simply made and functional tool for more than just bee wax
Not a bee keeper but I have been using this to cut closed cell foam. Does a pretty smooth job of cutting and shaping this alternate material. Pleased that the foam dried on the blade was easily wiped off. It heats up in under a minute. On the downside, it isn’t full of features. An indicator light to show power, or perhaps temperature would be welcomed. There’s no switch. If it’s plugged in, it is on. The wooden handle is fairly comfortable but simply finished, and mine had a knot in the midst of it. All in all, it’s a basic tool, does the job, and that job might even be for something other than what it was designed. ... show more
