I have most of the other Gerber BG knives just because of their excellent quality and also very specifically made for survival. I have Spyderco, Kershaw, many Victorinox Swiss Army knives in all shapes and sizes, Ka-Bar, and high end throwing knives as well as the Gerber BG line of knives. For those that cannot decide on what FOLDING knife to buy here are my humble recommendations: 1. Everyday carry small knife- Spyderco Delica/Endura folding knife 2. Tactical weapon - Cold Steel Recon 1 Folding knife or Spyderco Paramilitary 2 3. Mobile utility tools/survival - Victorinox Swiss Army Knives(take your pick from the hundreds that may fit your needs) 4. Survival/Weapon knife - Gerber Survival folding Knife 5. Inexpensive everyday carry - Smith and Wesson Extreme OPS Tanto folding knife I could not decide myself so I bought most of them over time. What I have found is most of the knives I bought are very good, both cheap and expensive. I absolutely love this Gerber BG folding knife. These are my thoughts on this knife: 1. No Cons at all. 2. Non-Slip grip. 3. It is a beautiful looking knife. 4. Razor sharp. I have not had to sharpen it yet. 5. Designed for Survival. 6. Excellent price. 7. Awesome weapon for hand to hand combat because of the broad blade. 8. Best knife for your Bug-out-bag. It does not take up any space at all since it is folding. JCarey's review pretty much sums it up so I won't bother retyping it. I've been using Gerber products for years. They make a good quality product and deliver great bang-for-the-buck. This product is no exception. I was originally looking for a nice fixed-blade sheath knife for backpacking. The Bear Grylls knife looked promising for the money ($40) but I didn't want a serrated edge on my fixed blade and I'd read that the Gerber's, while a good value, weren't as high a quality as some other, slightly more expensive, vendors (Ka Bar, Becker, SOG etc.). As a compromise, I snagged this Gerber folder which is very similar to the Bear Grylls fixed blade (folder is about 1" shorter) but half the price at $21. It's a *very* large folder and fits very comfortably in hand. The long blade and ergonomics are good. The back half of the blade is serrated which is great for cutting rope. I also like that the sheath can be mounted vertically or horizontally. Knife is very sharp out of the box and appears well constructed. Again, I realize that there are much better quality knives to be had in this category; but for the price, I don't think that anything comes close to the value of the Gerber Bear Grylls. ... show more

Saw they dropped the price on this, so i had to pull the trigger and get it. shipped very fast, almost scary fast. First let me explain why i picked this knife over the other Bear/Gerber knifes. -The two "scout" foldable knifes were much to small for what i was looking for, i wanted a solid 3 1/2+ inch blade. i already have many small blade and wanted one with more lenght, so those wouldnt do. -Second, i didnt get the 'ultimate knife' with all the bells and whistles because i already have a firestick, sharpening stone, whistle, etc. so why pay more for what i have? second, i think the 'ulimate' blade is great for people outdoors all the time as much as possible with a straight blade, but if your a traveller and aren't 'in the wild' as much, id rather have a closeable knife i can carry on my belt. That said, heres my review of the actual blade (on first look/use)... -Knife feels very solid in-hand. good weight to it, not to heavy, not to light, however i would say its slightly knife-side heavy over the handle(but i like that feel). -Grip/handle is great, 'grippy' like bear says, and the handle is very comfy in my larger hands. only thing that could make it better is if it was a touch wider. -Blade- thick, rugged. love gerbers 'drop-points'. i cant tell if this blade is pre-sharpend or not? it didn't cut well through several layers of packing tape, but sliced through paper and some light sticks easily, so i think it could be sharpend a bit for best results. -Sheath its very strudy, love the belt straps (to sit verticle or horizontal). Knife fits perfectly snug inside. except, if you put the 'survival guide' inside its little pocket, with the knife, then the knife is extremely snug, good because you know theres no way the knife can slip out, but then it takes a bit more force to get it out. i dont mind too much. to each his own. I will update review if any negative aspects arise, and after i test it out more heavily. overall, great buy in my opinion at the price i got it at. ($26) ... show more
