Top Amazon Reviews

  • Initial Impression - Negative reviews are too critical.
*I don't usually leave reviews if my feelings are inline with the bulk of the existing reviews, but I feel like this charger is unfairly criticized. I have a dozen or more battery tender units and have been very happy with all of them thus far - so I figured that, despite the negative reviews, I'd give this charger a try. I bought this one because the non-wifi one is the same price an worst case scenario is it doesn't work and I'm not out anything. Specifically, the super value in this unit for me is the ability for it to act as a 12v power supply, not just a charger/trickle. This will allow me to safely and reliably do a back-end ECU flash on the vehicle in question without having to worry about voltage drops causing flashing errors. Initial Unit Impression: Having read the description and previous reviews, I was not surprised when I opened the box and saw the size of the unit, connection wires, and the NON-REMOVAL clamps. While I appreciate the annoyance when compared to many of the other battery tender offerings, keep in mind that this charger has the capacity to push 75 amps to assist with starting. You CAN NOT squeeze 75 amps through the quick connectors. It'd be like trying to take a shower though stirring straws, it's not going to go well (aka the little wires supporting 75 amps will literally melt and light on fire). That said, they seem to be high quality clamps but are a bit chunky, so they might be mildly difficult to use in tight areas. As for the shape of it? I don't mind it... it's easy to carry. One other reviewer said that it's silly that the cables come out of the "bottom" so you can't put it down... and while it's true that the cables come out of the side opposite the handle.. the bottom is actually the back, making the face (side with the buttons/display) the top... which makes it particularly easy to use when it's on the ground/trunk floor. Initial App Impression: Simple and easy to use but not particularly useful. Took about 5 minutes to set up. (it does seem to crash sometimes, but it's usefulness doesn't outweigh the convenience of it working.. so meh, if it works, cool, if not, fine.) 1) Download the app 2) Open it and click "Add Charger" 3) Connect your device to a 2.4 Hz wireless network. 4) Connect your device to the charger network (BT_XXXX)... the password is 12345678 and I could only find this in online documentation on the BT website... would have been nice if it was a sticker on the front of the unit. 5) Follow the prompts, if it doesn't work - back up a step and try it again. 6) Name the unit (or not) and enjoy the app. Once it's set up, it doesn't really do much of anything. It reports the voltage and estimated charge of the connected battery, which is kind of neat if you're waiting to charge a battery. Other than that, the only other mildly useful thing is being able to disconnect the charger from the battery via the app (not sure why this would ever be needed though). Everything else is easier to just do via the buttons on the unit when hooking it up. First use: It was quick and easy to set up to put my car on a trickle charge. Seems to be charging nicely and the app is reporting current flow and voltage increasing. Literally everything I could want it to do at this point with the bonus of being able to monitor the charging on the app. Haven't tried the other settings yet but I will report back if they wildly under perform. It's worth noting a couple safety features such as the 75amp start function won't operate if the battery is under 10.5 volts... it will automatically switch to "boost (20amp)" mode until the voltage of the battery increases to a healthy range. I get it, it's inconvenient if you just want to start the car and go, but this is a SAFETY feature. One minor annoyance in regards to the Amazon listing... the description says "The selectable features allow to switch between 6-volts and 12-volts; standard, AGM or lithium battery.", however, I don't see any ability to switch to 6 volts on the unit, in the app, or in the documentation. I thought the ability to use this on 6 volt batteries (I have a 6 volt post-war vehicle) would make this an exceptional value, but it's just a pretty good value instead. ... show more

  • Push buttons needed, before clipping battery.
It works fine and I needed an updated charger. Weatherproof, maybe. I wouldn't try it.

  • Only four stars because the wifi setup is poorly implemented
As a charger, it does everything I want. I have several Battery Tender products, and they never disappoint with respect to their main purpose: they can maintain (and charge, depending on model) a battery without fuss. Just what we need. The wifi stuff though, that appears to be a graft-on. A company like this cannot also be an expert in the kind of tech necessary to do what this should do (app, wifi, etc.), and it is apparent to me that it wasn't done well. Will not connect to my network (which has a 2.4GHz network path). I suspect it's because I have a couple more advanced security features enabled. I won't roll back network security to make it work. That leads to another point though: a poorly implemented wifi stack is potentially a wide open door to your network. I'd recommend NOT putting it on your network unless you really know what you're doing with network isolation, etc. If not, you're just asking for trouble from yet another internet edge device that is full of bugs and probably won't be updated frequently, if ever. YMMV. ... show more

  • How I was able to get the charger to connect to my WiFi
It was tough to set up but I finally figured out what the issue was. I had to use an old Cisco/Linksys router to initially mirror my work network and get it setup. It wouldn't work with my Unifi enterprise wireless equipment, even when I disabled my 5g. What I finally figured out was that in my Cisco/Linksys config it had a setting under the 2.4Ghz wireless setup that allowed me to change from a mixed environment (802.11b/g/n) to an (802.11b/g) environment. Once I was able to eliminate the 801.11n standard, my charger hooked right up to my wifi and finished the setup process in the app. Once it was connected and working, I turned off the old Cisco/Linksys router and it was able to connect right up to my Unifi 2.4Ghz work network. So far it's installed near a backup generator and seems to be working great. I called their tech support and let their wifi expert Josh know what I found out. I'm guessing that in order to keep the cost of the unit down they chose to use an older wireless chipset which is not very compatible with today's modern wireless equipment. Let's hope they learn from their mistakes and change out the chipset in the next generation of chargers. I hope this helps someone out, it only took me 4 hours of troubleshooting to finally isolate the issue and get it into production. ... show more
