Description

This book wont teach you how to tattoo like a professional. This book wont teach you how to make a million dollars by opening your own tattoo studio in a week. You should really be wary of any book that does promise that. This book WILL get you started with the basic foundation for your apprenticeship. Written for the apprentice by someone who competed a formal tattoo apprenticeship, documenting the lessons learned along the way. The best way to learn to tattoo is as an apprentice, but some things you should know going into the situation. Just because we stress an apprenticeship does not mean that this 240+ page manual is lacking by any means! Basic Fundamentals of Modern Tattoo covers everything from how to build a tattoo machine to what types of needle configurations are best for each task. The best part of the book is that you get access to 'Teach Me To Tattoo' an interactive website designed specifically for the book. Where you can ask questions and get detailed information about each section of the book. As more information is added to the website the value increases. Registered copies of the book will allow the reader to gain access to the TMTT Portal online for as long as the portal is in existence at no additional charge. If you are a tattoo apprentice then you should definitely have this piece of literature in your toolbox. Learn about the components of tattoo machines, how to tune a tattoo machine, about different needle configurations, what pigments are best for the job, sterilization standards, and industry secrets / tips. Follow the goals and milestones laid out in a concise and easy to understand manner, with detailed graphics and illustrations (many computer generated for detail). Get recommendations on what gear is considered top quality, and tricks on how to use after-market parts on your machines to get the most bang for your buck. Remember that the best tattoo artists will always tell you to complete an apprenticeship, the only secrets in the tattoo industry are the answers to the questions you have not yet asked. Tattoo Apprentice, Learn tattoo, tattoo tricks, tattoo tips, tattoo guide. Read more

  • It is very educational for beginners
It was very helpful in the beginning of my learning process for tattoo artistry. I would recommend though that those beginning also try an internship at a shop theres a lot more you can learn when hands on.

  • Tattoo book
Bought as a gift, person loved it.

  • Very good book very poorly written
The book clearly has quality information in it. The author just as clearly did not make use of an editor. I learned a lot from this book about tattooing, and a lot about self-restraint. Okay, this man knows his stuff, there's absolutely NO question about that. This is an excellent book, full of very useful information about the industry, the machines and how they work, the ethics of tattooing, sanitary working environments and health concerns, and yes, a little bit about technique. Not a ton. Mostly it's about exactly what it says: the basic fundamentals. Technique is personal, it's something you pick up over time and develop yourself. Now this guy is highly knowledgeable, he's one smart cookie, but he can't write his way out of a wet paper bag. Writing skill and tattooing skill do not necessarily go together, sad to say. Typos, grammar mistakes, and cringe-worthy errors riddle this book like swiss cheese is riddled with holes. But hey, if you can see past that, or hold down your bile long enough to read it anyway, you can glean a ton of very useful stuff from his book. I just... don't understand why he went without the use of an editor, even a well-read friend could have fixed a ton of simple, basic mistakes. For example, thoughout the entire book, he refers to the yoke on the tattoo machine as a "yolk" as if the machine were an egg. The. Entire. Book. He knows his tattooing information inside and out, dead to rights and no mistake, but he can't tell the difference between "yoke" and "yolk." I found it very difficult NOT to throw the book across the room every other page. People, when you make typos, it makes you look dumb, even if you are very, very smart. This guy was clearly very, very smart, and I suffered through the typos because I wanted the knowledge that was in his head, but believe you me, I SUFFERED, and if you want to get inside his head, you are going to suffer, too. Because it's BAD! ... show more

  • IMHO - An excellent resource for the beginning artist!
It's only the second tattoo beginner's book I've read this month, but I personally found it superior to the first (The Complete Art of Tattooing - Erick Alayon). This book breaks down the art of tattooing into easy to follow fundamental sections. In the early part of the book it even defines a set of landmarks the beginning artist should accomplish prior to putting needle to skin. It's everything the beginning artist needs in their first book. It touches on all aspects of the industry and process of tattooing. I highly recommend it to the beginning artist. My favorite thing about this book is that the author gives the reader a of list of retailers for equipment and supplies after each respective section. Like other beginner's books he stresses the importance of an apprenticeship, and informs beginning artists that quality equipment and supplies from many renowned retailers will only sell to licensed tattoo shops. ... show more

  • Great book and really informative
Great book and really informative. I'm saving money for an internship but until then I'm trying to learn everything I can just to get a jump start. This book is all about fundamentals, true to text book format. It's unique in this as I was trying to find a book that wasn't just page after page of designs. He stresses learning the proper way through an apprenticeship. There is no substitute for learning directly from a master but this can show you the basic fundamentals so that you're armed with knowledge. It covers everything from how to build a machine and the breakdown of the parts to bloodborn pathogens and the importance of proper hygiene. I'm really glad I picked this up. I feel better informed. ... show more

  • Agree....needs an editor, otherwise, adequate-good.
I agree with another reviewer that this book should have employed an editor. It doesn't even need a professional editor, just someone with adequate gramatical skills and a sense of continuity. Also, with someone who claims to have a degree in Fine Art, the graphics leave much to be desired. I get the feeling that it was put together quickly. I really like the empahsis that the author places on professionalism and organization and I do believe that it is a decent reference for someone with a specific curiousity about Tattoo. Early on in the book the author suggests that if you do not have any artistic skill that you should not persue tattooing. The simple fact of the matter is that there is a difference between creating art and using acquired technical skills to replicate artistic concepts. For the most part, tattooing falls into the latter category. I have enjoyed reading the book though, having no knowledge of tattooing, at least this text has brought me up to a level that I feel comfortable that I will be conversational about the subject and confident to ask the right questions. Where I go from here is up to me. ... show more

  • A helpful tool for beginers - mostly about the tattoo machine
Upon purchasing this book, I had no knowledge about the mechanics of a tattoo machine. This book goes into great detail about the equipment, (in a way that's easy to understand!), and helped me understand how the machine actually works. While the book gives a brief history on tattooing, and talks about the actual tattooing process, I'd say this book is mostly about the actual tattoo machine itself. That's not a bad thing, because you will need to understand the mechanics of the machine to become a successful tattoo artist. It's still a great book for beginners, or anyone interested in getting their foot in the door of the tattoo business. ... show more
