  • Apocalyptic Adventure
This started with promise and I had high hopes. But it slowed to where I had difficulty maintaining interest. The idea of a high tech space balloon is very cool- but not much was done the idea other than providing a safe haven for the crew to survive the apocalypse. Characters were well drawn and interesting. The ending was not a "cliff hanger", but rather a point where the author just stopped. The book needed some answers to questions. It is unsatisfying to leave everything for the next book. Still- it was good enough, and interesting enough that I will take a chance on the next one. ... show more

  • how mortal are we
Read or spell pound. It started off, treating in continued until the crew had to abandon. At that point it seemed somewhat unrealistic as to the things that took place. Once on the ground. It seemed that there was an extension of effort to prolong the timeframe of the characters reaching a safe house. If you like you basically good luck. ... show more

  • Terrifying Thrill Ride of a Book!
Wow. This was such a great read! I downloaded it on impulse when it was offered for free, and I'm so glad I did. I've never heard of this author before, and I believe this is an indie book. The author is an excellent writer and the editing was impeccable. The book follows a 5-man crew that takes a hot-air balloon up to 138,000 in the hopes of making commercial travel to the edge of space possible. But during their inaugural flight, something happens on the ground. Something that looks a lot like a nuclear strike. The resulting dust cloud conceals whatever destruction lies below. The crew is 28 miles above the earth's surface with limited oxygen tanks and they must decide whether to stay in the air for as long as they can, or parachute through the dust/possible radiation cloud while they still have enough oxygen in their tanks to find shelter on the ground. I couldn't put this book down. Normally, I need a break between reading books in a series, but I jumped right into Book 2 because I need to see what happens! ... show more

  • A unique and gripping adventure
Balloon takes a premise that seems like it would be limited and blows it up (pun intended) into something unexpected. The background research is evident throughout the story, and the characters are well-developed and relatable. It's an easy book to get into.

  • Balloon adventure gone wrong
An epic story of a crew that finds a changed world after their memorable flight in a balloon. Well written with multiple twists and turns it is indeed a captivating story. The suspense is good even though there is a good many flashbacks which slow down the flow. Formatting and editing and some technical flaws at the beginning decrease the scientific veracity. Still, looking forward to reading book 2 of the series. Well done. ... show more

  • Totally worth reading
The writer developed a suspenseful book that captured my interest from beginning to conclusion. This is an extremely unique fiction about space travel that gone horribly wrong. Each individual in the book has a rich backstory thanks to careful research and writing. I like it when a story has well-written descriptions. In addition, I found this book to be a page-turner because it was fast-paced, interesting, hilarious, and horrific all at once. The highest recommendation I can give a book is that I'm going to read the future volume in this series. ... show more

  • Up up and away in my beautiful balloon
Title is from a song made famous by a group called The Fifth Dimension, a popular band in the 60,s. This balloon will be famous to those that remember the flight. And without spoiling the story let me say the tale is frightening. One is obvious the other is completely unexpected. Also the ending is not an actual end, its more like......we'll see what happens later, ( in book2) . Nevertheless the tale will bring you in and hold you're attention right to the last page. Its a great setup for a series but reads as well as a standalone. ... show more

  • A fun read with some good twists
Balloon has an intriguing premise in a well-trod genre. Good suspense and some unexpected twists. There were a few technical issues with formatting that could be cleaned up.
