I was desperate for a good sound machine for my autistic child. We moved from a quiet island to a city and between neighbors and traffic there was no sleeping. I had very certain things I was looking for 1) it must get LOUD 2) it must have different white/brown sounds 3) it must be tough because my child already broke 4 white sound machines. 4) it must mask traffic and bangs above us from loud neighbors 5) must not sound like it’s on loop or shut off after so many hours. Happy to say this met all my needs. Live 30ft from main road,can’t hear a thing, can’t hear people above us. The machine has a huge volume selection so you find the one you want. There is a wonderful variety of sounds to choose from so you will find the one you like the best. I was nervous to spend $$ on this but it was so worth getting a good nights sleep. This is the Rolls <Royce> of white noise machines. Buy this. The available sounds and tones are amazing. I suffer from tinnitus and it is difficult to get something to cover up that constant noise. This machine does it better than I ever thought possible. Also very important, the sounds are not looping. It is surprisingly easy to detect the loop on most sound machines. No loop here, so you won't go bonkers waiting for the next repeat to happen in your head. Do not waste your money on a cheap noise machine... (conair) They short out after minimal use and the loops are ridiculous. This looks modern and super cool on my nightstand. The sound quality is rich and sounds much better than I anticipated. Every once in a while I run across a product that is just so darn good that my quest for a better one ends. This is such a product. This is the last kind of sound/white noise machine I will ever use. Easy to travel with too! But this! You and your sleep will love it. ... show more

    • Good Compact Size, But Some Negative Features To Consider
While this Avantek unit is compact in size, the machine does have some negative features. First, it is quite difficult to know which of the various "white noise" (or any of the other choices) selections are currently playing, since there is absolutely no visible dial on the unit itself, to show the listener as to exactly which sound selection is playing, when they are making their choice. If you do consider a particular sound choice, it is quite difficult to remember where this choice was, if you want to return and make this your first choice for future use. Secondly, when the user has made their sound choice, there are only minimal minus and plus gradations attempting to arrive at the optimal volume for the user. Some of the selections are too low and the only next increment is too loud . There are not a sufficient amount of volume options, that would be in a mid-range for a more comfortable listening experience. All in all, the manufacturer, I feel, did cut corners and should have incorporated a dial, visibly showing the various sound choices available, as well as allowing for additional volume preferences. Great little box, LOVE the fan sounds. I am one that needs a fan every night, and how obnoxious that is in the winter, or traveling, now I can use this little things. Lots of sounds to pick from, lots of volume settings. It comes with a USB cord AND an AC adapter. There seems to be misconception that this doesn't come with a way to plug it in. You can plug it right into the wall, or into a computer or lamp, or other USB port, but it CAN go into the wall socket!!!! I like the blue stripe, it's just color, not a light.     • Horrible sound choices - see below.

This has 20 different "relaxing" sounds it says. I think relaxing is very subjective. The first six or seven sounds are all white noise, they are just at different octaves and intensity. Another sound is rain-forest-like with birds chirping. If it's for ambiance, it will be fine. If you are trying to use it to sleep, there are several bird chirps that are so loud and piercing, they wake me up, the opposite effect. There are three or four different "fan" sounds. This is odd, because a real fan would be cheaper than this, and you'd get the benefit of a nice breeze. There are also some truly disturbing sounds, like a psycho or serial killer would like. There is one that is supposed to be a crackling fire. Um...not exactly. It sounds like a raging inferno at the gates of Hades. I'm talking, a raging blaze of a wild fire sweeping down on your family as you're about to be engulfed. The whistling wind option is more like a white out blizzard about to blow over the cabin and freeze your family to death. There is a rain option, that sounds like typhoon Irma washing away your village. There is a also a ticking clock. I've never thought of that as relaxing, similarly I've never thought of a slow drip in the shower as relaxing. Listening to the clock tick made me so tense. There are also several other very strange unidentifiable sounds. No joke, they sound like lost souls trapped between two worlds moaning in anguish. The most relaxing one is the ocean sound. Unfortunately its not a good sound to sleep to because of the varying decibel level. It's quiet, quiet, quiet, you start to drift off to sleep, then seventh wave comes and SWOOSH! Your awake! Kept jarring me out of sleep, I finally had to turn it off. My wife and I did have a good laugh wondering who thought these sounds were relaxing. Oh yeah, another one I forgot sounds like a swarm of locust descending on your crops and devouring everything in site while you realize you don't have enough money or seeds to replant in time for harvest. Truly, truly, disturbing. This thing literally gave me horrible nightmares. I'm not kidding I woke up in cold sweat thinking I was covered in hornets stinging me and filling my mouth and eyes and nose and I was choking to death on them blind while I was stung to death. A direct result of this sound machine. I might send it back, but I also might perform a cleansing ritual and have to destroy it in order to clear the bad jujube from our house. ... show more
