  • A classic reborn / Un clásico renacido
Style: HeroQuest Game System
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I played HeroQuest many times during my adolescence. It is a very creative game with elements that make it very appealing to anyone. The original game had not been available for many years, and it is good to see how it has been relaunched with some new elements. In general, HeroQuest has not changed its essence. 4 players take control of a warrior, a mage, a dwarf, and an elf and venture into an adventure to try to stop the forces of the evil Zargon. One more player helps to direct the game while being in charge of taking on the role of the villain's hordes. The game comes with a book full of adventures that are played one after another to form a story. The box contains a huge board to place the miniatures and create the necessary settings for each adventure. It also contains a huge number of miniatures of characters, monsters, and decorations, which you'll use to create a forgotten dungeon, or the ruins of a castle, or monster-infested caves. The important thing is the teamwork of the group of adventurers to survive each adventure. The miniatures in this version are much better than those in the original game, with much more detail and made of strong material. The furniture and decorations are also better and give it a standout aesthetic. In other words, the board draws attention when you're already in action. It's like a simple version of D&D, if you can understand it that way. Additionally, the game gives you the tools to create your own adventures to play with friends and family. Highly recommended game, each game can take around 1 hour, filled with entertainment. It's a simple game for any age. The only reason I have to give it 4 stars is that this version lacks "the shop," which is a board where you can see the equipment that the heroes can buy between each adventure. This was a very good element in the original version that they left out for some reason. It's not essential since the equipment is all on cards, but it was a visual element that gave players access to see the tools that the heroes have access to. ... show more

  • Re-release of a beloved classic.
Style: HeroQuest Game System
I first played this game back in 1991 with my brother and thought it was my favorite board game. Fast forward to the present. I had been wishing for a long time that I could get another copy of HeroQuest to play again, but good condition copies were just so bloody expensive ($300+ USD on a certain auction site). When I found out that Avalon Hill was re-releasing it, I snatched one up as soon as I was able. There are a few differences to the original version though. Pros -- Sturdier doors and tile pieces. New version comes in plastic trays that, if taken care of, make it easier to keep the pieces together and in good condition. Box seems sturdier. Cons -- Character/monster pieces are flimsier and require much more care when handling. Due to the problems with mass production, more than half of the pieces in my copy were either misshapen (not horribly) or bent. Neutral -- Armory no longer comes printed on a sheet, but rather is split up into cards. It was easier, to me, when the whole armory was on one easy to keep track of sheet. If you are playing for the first time, or thinking of getting a copy to play it again, I would make a suggestion and reccomend getting four extra sets of dice (one for each player, one for game master) or a couple of dice towers/trays. It makes things so much easier due to the somewhat cramped nature of having enough pieces placed on the board. There are also several expansions to this game that you might want to check out. Kellar's Keep (quest pack) Return of the Witch Lord (quest pack) Commander of the Guardian Knights (player character expansion -- hard to find as of the time of this review) Forsaken Tunnels of Xor-Xel (downloadable quest) New Beginnings (downloadable quest) The Frozen Horror (quest pack) Into The Northlands (downloadable quest) The Rogue Heir of Elethorn (player character expansion) The Mage of the Mirror (quest pack) Advanced HeroQuest (Milton Bradley/Gamesworkshop, not Avalon Hill -- very hard to find in good condition) Wizards of Morcar (Milton Bradley/Gamesworkshop, not Avalon Hill -- very hard to find in good condition) Against the Ogre Horde (Milton Bradley/Gamesworkshop, not Avalon Hill -- very hard to find in good condition) ... show more

  • Well done, Hasbro! A remake, but the components are MUCH improved!
Style: HeroQuest Game System
Disclaimer: I am one of the geeks who owned the first edition from the 90s. (STILL have it, too!) I must say, this is excellent work by Hasbro. The packaging is premium, as every component has it’s place in form fitting plastic trays. The materials are outstanding: All minis are quality sculpts and the furniture and doors are all plastic, so they can be painted! This is not simply a remake of a classic. It’s a major improvement in the quality of the game components. While it’s a little sad that the original Warhammer universe could not be used (Thanks, GW.), the changes are relatively small. Other than some thematic alterations, it’s the same exact game, but at a hobbyist level. Certainly the price is higher than most casual board game players are willing to fork out, but you really get what you pay for here. If a simple game with cheap components, like Monopoly or Sorry, is going for $20, then this a bargain. ... show more
