  • Giving this a 3 star, see detailed review on why!
The first day i installed it, im pretty sure my chickens thought I was crazy to expect them to use this "new contraption". The first day, none of them wanted to use it because they were leary of it but with some coaxing (treats, LOTS of treats! 😅) they finally came out. I had 2 that didn't make it in the first night so I changed the closing time and so far so good. So, what I liked- I don't have to go out before the sun rises to open the run door anymore, nor do I have to go out and close it after dark! It's easy to use and pretty self explanatory! Battery operated is both a pro and a con. Pro because I don't need to run electric to the unit, but a con from someone who lives in a state the batteries do tend to die quickly in the cold weather. Thankfully I was aware that it is battery operated, and made this a secondary door and not their "Main" entrance for that reason being a possibility. It's not a huge ordeal because I feed/water them 2xs daily after the sun comes up so I can let them out and lock them up either way. We don't vacation during winter months due to the animals but my main reason for testing this is for summer time vacationing as we typically have a sitter to do other animal chores and to check in on the chickens water and collect eggs as we give plenty of feed to last for days so I'll be sure to have them keep an eye on it being dead or not just incase when they do other chores for us :) What I don't care for, the cold weather killing the battery. But, I think I might remove it and install it inward, on the interior wall vs. Exterior and see if that helps the battery life a little bit. But I can't be mad about it being they include that it's battery powered in the description Over all I'm pretty dang happy! ... show more

  • A must-have for ‘chicken tenders’!
I’ve never used an automatic chicken coop door before, but after getting this, I’ve learned that it’s a must-have for anybody who keeps chickens! For the price, this door can’t be beat. I have it scheduled so that it will open every day at 3pm (after the chickens do most of their laying) and close again at night (currently 7pm). Keep in mind that it does use military time - I almost set it to close at 7am instead of 7pm! You can also manually open it if you want to let the chickens out (or lock them in) off-schedule. So far, even though we’ve had some really snowy and cold nights, it has opened and closed consistently every day at the scheduled times. No more worrying about chickens laying their eggs in the bushes or whether I’ve closed the coop at night or not! Our henhouse is made of 3 cattle panels arched and secured to a 2x4 frame, a style called a ‘hoop coop’. To install the door, we ended up cutting a hole in the cattle panels. Instead of using the screws that came with this product, the door just happened to be the perfect size to zip-tie it to the cattle panel bars on either side - see picture. Impromptu and certainly not permanent, but it works! The chickens had no qualms about their new door and started using it immediately. I’m glad it’s waterproof, because the place where it’s installed doesn’t have any protection from rain. I’m curious how long the 3 AA batteries will last. Only time will tell. So far, I’m very pleased! ... show more

  • Handy for sure, some notable setbacks.
We've been raising chickens for eggs for decades. I've heard of these, but have heard horror stories of people having these not work in cold weather and leaving their birds exposed at night. But I decided to give it a shot myself. I received the item fast, it was packaged nice and secure in a box and other packing. The instructions are super simple. I grabbed some AA batteries and gave it a go. I say it on the front porch for days watching how it acted. so far I've only had one night that it didn't close. This night had dropped into the 40s. This is an issue these apparently do have. I'm thinking on cold nights I just need to close it manually and pull the batteries and let it sit until the temperatures warm up. Not sure I care for that inconvenience though. While not ideal, I love the product. I know during the summer I'm not going to have to worry about this even a little. Maybe if you live in an area where it gets cold a lot this will be an underperformer. But if you are willing to ensure that you are managing the door properly and closing it up during cold weather and just handling your birds manually through the colder spells then you will be fine with this. I would knock it a star, but was warned this may be an issue so I can't complain. It works well and outside of one time it has opened and closed precisely when it should. This is going to save us having to rush home every evening to close up the coop when it gets dark during the summer time, but is completely unreliable when the temperatures swing below 50s. I can't in good conscience recommend this product with those flaws. I would look elsewhere unless I live in a very mild climate or heat my coop. ... show more

  • Works as it should
This product definitely raises and lowers, but it is thin and flimsy and I worry about anything being able to break in. If you are trying to keep your flock protected, I am not sure this is a safe bet. If you arent as concerned about predators and basically want to keep your chickens up at night, this should do that! The automatic timer worked great as well as the manual controls. ... show more

  • Does the job and easy to program on a schedule
This door only took about 5 minutes to install and was easy, and it took about the same time to install the batteries and figure out how to program the time settings. Keep in mind that adapting it to your coop may take longer than that 10 minutes, but that's not the fault of the door! We will have to change the open & close times over the course of the year, since our day length changes by 5-6 hours during that time, but that's okay. If it were automatic (using a light sensor), it would likely open too early - we have resident owls active into the early-morning hours and so we like how this door only responds to its programming and not the light levels. ... show more

  • Works as intended!
Easy to install and allows us to automatically open and close the door to our coop daily. Like that it's battery-powered as we don't have any electric plugs out there. So far so good!
