  • Performance is outstanding, setup was somewhat annoying
Style: WiFi 6, 5.4Gbps
I'm going to start with the good news...this thing really performs. I upgraded from a Linksys AC1750 that was going on 5 or 6 years old. It had always been rock solid (not a single outage in all those years) but I had a feeling I wasn't get the speeds I should have been, boy was I correct. I recently upgraded my FIOS internet from a 100 to a 500 Gbps plan because I have two sons and both are now using tablets, etc. Plus I have a high end gaming PC and we have three TVs in the house streaming 4k, in addition to other devices. After the FIOS plan upgrade I ran a speed test from my PC and was getting about 340 gbps download and upload speeds. However, after I upgraded to this router...520 gbps download and upload! On top of that the range of the 5G network is way bigger than it was, probably triple the area. One of the other main reasons I wanted to upgrade to this router is so I have better coverage in my back yard in the summer. This thing covers my entire house and most of my yard - front and back. I am extremely happy with the performance. Now lets discuss the initial setup... First off, I got it done and it only took me a total of about 15 minutes. But there were some annoyances that I want to share with others. When you first start the setup and open the app it tells you to scan the QR code on the router. Mine didn't have any QR code on it. That was number 1. I checked the box too, no QR codes anywhere. So I had to do it manually. Not a big deal for me, however...when you select to do it manually in the app it takes you out of the app into your phone's settings to connect to the router network (NETGEAR** and the password is written on the bottom of the router). It also says that after you connect to go back into the Nighthawk app to continue setup. OK, so I connected to the router manually (which worked fine) but then wasn't able to go back into the app because the app was still directed to my phone's settings to connect to WIFI. Nothing was happening, so had to close everything and re-launch the app, which then started the process over again. Finally after 3 tries, the app recognized that I had connected to the router and continued with the setup process. Then, the router needed a firmware update. During that update I got an error message saying that it couldn't find the router, but the firmware update finished successfully anyway. Then I had to re-connect my phone to the router (again) manually to move to the final step in the setup. All in all the setup completed correctly but as you can see there were some hiccups. As stated it only took me 15 minutes or so but probably should have taken less than 5. I am being nick picky here but I remember setting up the Linksys router and it went very smoothly and quickly. Not really a big deal though and now that its done it never has to be done again. Given the performance I am getting from it, I don't really care. Hence the five star review. The only thing remaining is to find out how well this stays connected over the years. After how extremely well my Linksys performed I have very high expectations. We'll see...this review may change. ... show more

  • A good, very basic router
Style: WiFi 6, 1.8Gbps
I ordered this router to replace the Spectrum router I was paying $5 a month for, now having gone to $7 a month. It’s the router that looks like a charred meatloaf, standing on its’ head. It’s nothing special, so finding a substitute was like hurdling a very low bar. This R6700AX is an exact clone of the NETGEAR RAX10. The specs are identical, but not the price. Why, I don’t know. Of note is that this router omits the “NIGHTHAWK” designation, which, aside from generally lower speeds and area coverage, also lacks a USB port and an on/off switch on the back. These are not deal breakers though. My networking demands are quite modest, so I didn’t need a gaming level router. One Dell workstation, two tablets, and a 2000 square foot house, where all the activity is confined to a single quadrant. After reading the user manual, downloaded from the NETGEAR website (146 pages, does not cover NIGHTHAWK app), I opted to do a website interface, desktop installation, rather than using the highly touted NIGHTHAWK app. Though the NIGHTHAWK app has a lot of appeal for its’ simplicity and features, I wanted more in-depth control of the routers options than the app provided. For example, by electing to choose the “Smart Connect” feature, the router automatically chooses which band, the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, that gives the best performance for each particular device that’s connected. You can still choose to configure each band separately by assigning a different network name (SSID) to each band (and that configuration is generated, by default, in your setup procedure). But with only two devices connected at a time, the “Smart Connect” option did not offer any benefit to me. I actually went several steps further and disabled the 2.4 GHz band and both Guest Network bands leaving only the 5 GHz band active for my two tablets. A word of caution for either of these connection preferences. Unlike some other NETGEAR routers, neither option will disable the WPS feature. That’s a potential security threat lurking under the radar. The installation process was simple and straight forward. Just sit back and answer the questions, click next, page by page, and you’re done. I chose the automatic set up option, the Setup Wizard, with the ability to go back through and tune the features important to me. This is done using the routers web interface, for which you must sign back into with your newly created password. There are a couple of You Tube videos, search: TONOR NETGEAR R6700AX SETUP, and search: BROK3N1MAGE NETGEAR NIGHTHAWK, that can give you a visual “heads up” as to how the router interface is laid out beforehand. I found them helpful. And the results were, well, underwhelming. LAN speeds to my workstation were almost identical to the Spectrum router at 366 Mbps download and 12 Mbps upload, with an assigned 300 Mbps service from Spectrum. Wi Fi speeds for the tablets were about 10% faster with the R6700AX, but if not for doing a speed test, I would not have detected any difference. Overall, I am satisfied with this router. Price, features, speed and coverage are all adequate for my minimalist inclinations. I also opted for the 4-year Asurion protection coverage. If the thing blows up before its’ time, it’s replaced. If I get past 11 months, it will pay for itself in monthly rental fees. ... show more

  • Important steps!
Style: WiFi 6, 5.4Gbps, DumaOS 3.0
Before you update the firmware (which you obtain through the netgear website) please make sure you reset the router to factory defaults. After you've flashed the new fw please make sure to factory reset it again and THEN set it up. This is known is a clean flash. If you're facing issues with WiFi dropping. Its due to a flawed WPA2 integration on the 4 way handshake. Simply use the better and more secure version WPA3 in settings and it works perfectly. You should be using the wpa3 anyways regardless If WPA 2 is flawed or not. I'm actually happy this happened to me. Geo fence works, QoS works, literally everything just works. Bufferbloating is no longer an issue. I love the ui, the only "bad" thing would be 100mbps loss compared to my ISP router. However seeing that this router has a much higher range, better ui and better controls this is a no brainer. Not to mention no buffer bloat. ... show more
