I ordered this auger set in preparation for spring planting. During a spring-like winter day, I decided to take them out and see how they would do in one of our garden beds. For the test, I used a name-brand cordless drill to run the augers. At first, I tried the drill at high speed but found that if I hit a small rock beneath the surface the auger would react in a wonky sort of way. So then I switched to low speed but found that while the auger would dig much more nicely, it did not clear the hole sufficiently. Ultimately, the augers seem to work best if used at low speed and then, once at depth, switched to high speed to clear the holes for planting. I'm excited to use these this year for those seeds that need to be planted a bit deeper in the garden. I think they could also be very useful for planting sapling trees. ... show more

This review is for the Auger Drill Bit for Planting Set of 3. These worked great in semi-sandy soil taking far less time than I expected; really only a few seconds on low speed. Make sure you get the squared portion securely in the chuck. Mine slipped down onto the rounded shaft at first on the larger bit. ... show more

1-27-24 I regret not getting these sooner I've looked at them for the last 2 years and never pulled the trigger thinking they would not be effective in our hard pack decomposed granite with 1 to 3-in rocks and caliche roughly 8 in down. I was wrong they work great! I'm not necessarily using these to plant instead I'm using them for installing larger diameter ground stakes and smaller diameter fence posts. The smaller one I take with us camping when we put up our portable dog fencing sometimes the ground is too hard to easily push the fence posts in, again these augers work great. Obviously the paint or orange powder coating wears off just be sure to store them out of a moisture rich environment so they don't rust on you. For reference I use my 18 volt DeWalt cordless drill, but will pull out my hammer drill when needed to bust up the caliche. Definitely a purchase you won't regret. Without any bubble wrap, these 3 augers made it through shipping without scratching each other. I think the orange paint coating is extremely durable and I can't wait to make my planting easier and faster this year.

I am looking forward to late spring and early summer, so I can move the plants started in the greenhouse to the garden. I have in the past struggled with transplanting because the starter plants are delicate. The right size hole is critical to getting the delicate plant roots into the soil. I can create the right width and depth holes needed with these Auger Drill Bit for Planting Set of 3. The three sizes are 1.6" x 8.6", 3" x12", and 2" x14.5". They have the hex shaft for 3/8" or larger Hex Drive Drill. They each have a sharp tip that easily pushes into the soil and the spiral for cutting the soil. The bright orange powder coating will help resist rust with a minimum of care. I have the minimal 18V cordless drill needed to effectively drill into the soil, so my gardening just got easier by using these auger drill bits. ... show more

This product will cut my time in half when it's time to plant bulbs.it fits my Makita drill perfect and together they aren't too heavy or cumbersome for me to use repeatedly. I tried it out while rebuilding our deck last week and I was amazed at how easy it was to handle.

These Auger Drill Bits work great, and are solidly built from steel with sufficient weld joints. They have hex shafts at the drill end, and snug up securely in the drill chuck. Keep in mind that they will not go thru any large rocks, and are easily "snagged" on large roots (that will almost yank the drill out of your hand when hitting one).
