  • Will work for off grid battery charging.
I can already tell this is going to fit my needs. Plug it right up to my motorhomes batteries on the exterior & put it in the sun. No need for Integrating or drilling holes or running wires. & then easily folds up into the bag. Love it! Great invention! Update: after using off grid for several months the charging capabilities still hold strong. However the construction of the unit is a bit flimsy. I’d expect better quality hinges & legs for the price. The legs are flimsy & have bent very easily & have broken off their rivets. I will say however that the durability of the panels themselves is outstanding. It’s been thrown around in wind storms & rained on. Still works perfectly. So construction over all is flimsy. Durability is good. Update nearly 2 years later, this is the best & most durable piece of tech my motorhome has in it. This thing has been stepped on. Thrashed around by wind. Rained on. Knocked on its face on cement & gravel. Dropped. Bent to close the wrong way & it still works perfectly. Great value & great durability! ... show more

  • It isn't apples to apples with other solar units
Size: 160W
Update to my review: I've changed my rating to 5 stars. Why? Because this unit Works and it IS lightweight, and it works even though the wire gauge is small, and it works even though the legs don't provide much tilt, and it really works at this price point! We put this ATEM Solar Suitcase to a real world test: could it keep 3 group 27 batteries charged and re-charged while boondocking? And Yes it can! Now our electrical needs were small - we only run a small inverter for the TV and DVD player, 12V water pump and lights, but every day over 6 days, this little guy Added power to our house batteries... I am impressed! I still doubt it is a 160W panel, but hey, it is working for us... Old review: Like another reviewer, I found the watt rating to be more than optimistic... Maybe this is a 100 watt unit at best. It's a PWM controller with really thin gauge wire (16 AWG) from the controller to whatever you are charging - that's bad at 16' of wire run. Between the two panels it is 14 AWG, which for a short run might be ok. I'm on the fence on if I should just send it back, or give it the proper components and see what it can do... The good: A complete set up, even has clips you can wind the wire around. Carry handle on unit and on bag. Good build quality - the controller is mounted away from the panel and everything is solidly mounted. The bad: Charge controller has no adjustment for different battery types. Legs are too short to give any chance at correct angle to the sun. Wiring is waaay too small gauge. They're way overstating the power output - I only got <5 amps out of it on a sunny day. No secret here, but for the size it can't be close to 160 watts... This is an 80 - 100 watt system, if that... ... show more

  • functional, flimsy, no protection for solar cells
Size: 160W
I bought these panels for two purposes: (1) to extend the time I can dry camp with my travel trailer and (2) to gain some experience with portable panels. To that end, these will meet my needs very well. It's been noted that the panel construction is somewhat flimsy. This is true. The product listing notes there is no glass over the solar cells. Also true. The cells are totally exposed and, in my opinion vulnerable to damage. If you are rough on your equipment, these might not be for you. That said, the panels do work well. Being lightweight, it's easy to re-orient them as the sun traverses the sky. Speaking of orientation, the support legs are kinda short and will angle the panels for high, summer sun. I may add some leg extensions to improve generation when the sun is low in the sky, such as in winter. The panels are manufactured with a 50A Anderson Power Pole compatible connector on the end of the cable. They come with a short cable with a 50A connector on one end and battery cable clips at the other. I've added a 50A connector at my trailer's batteries for rapid deployment and tear down. Bottom line: I'm generally pleased with the panels. Four stars instead of five because of how the panels are constructed. ... show more
