  • Impressive laptop with lot's of power
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H RAM Size: 16 GB Hard Disk Size: 1 TB Graphics Description: GeForce RTX 3070 Style: 15.6" 165Hz QHD
First the current price of $2499 is a bit disappointing. I did not pay $2499 nor would I. I get the current hardware crisis, but still sad to see, maybe unavoidable, I guess. Pros: -The 5800H+3070 is a great combo. -Nvidia 3070 hits the advertised 115w usage in all games and will hover around 125-130 in most titles. Incredibly good GPU for 1440p. Temps (custom fan curve) never exceed 85c even in games like Cypberpunk. Coming from a 2070-maxq I see about a 18 to 22 fps difference at 1080p, and at 1440p the framerate is the equivalent to 1080p at max settings. ex: Shadow Of The Tomb Raider (dlss+RT med): 2070mq 1080p 71fps, 3070 1080p 93 fps, 3070 1440p 73 fps. Good performer all around. -The Ryzen 5800H is immensely powerful and can handle any task. It is a great fit for the 3070. The chip runs hot so a custom fan profile is needed to keep it within 42c-55c. The 5800H is power efficient and works great on battery. 8C/16T should perform well for years to come. -Thermals- Good overall, custom profiles are needed for the fans to hit maximum RPM. The turbo and performance take too long to hit full stride. The silent profile is great for just browsing and keeps reasonable temps. The fan’s do get extremely loud but never drown out the speakers. The fans become noticeable around 3000rpm. I use headphones for gaming anyway. -Mechanical keyboard. It’s excellent. The keyboard is great to touch, keys are responsive and have good depth. It’s loud and clickly, I love it; to each his own lol. The RGB is fully customizable, and Asus provides great software to create your own look. It is fun to type on, no complaints. The screen. It is almost perfect, just a smidge of led glow on the bottom left-hand corner, not distracting at all. Zero dead pixels. The brightness is great for indoors, might have to turn it down a little in dark rooms, sufficient for outdoors. The colors are accurate, and Asus armory crate provides some useful profiles and customizations (game visuals). I lucked with my screen, feels good to win the panel lottery. -Speaker. The speakers sound amazing. I also own a Googlebook Pixel Go and the speakers are better than the vast majority of premium laptops, that is until I tried the Scar 15. The speakers get very loud, lots of detail and bass, very little distortion at high volumes. I would recommend using Dolby Atmos software (Windows store $14) or Equalizer APO (free) to bring out the most in the sound. -Trackpad. Not much to say as I use a mouse. It’s responsive and the ability to switch between numlk and trackpad is useful. -I/O. I like the fact that the right side of the laptop is clean, nothing more annoying than having the headphone jack and power on the right side. Cons: -I/O. I think one more USB 3.2 port would have been nice. -No Thunderbolt, this is Ryzen so understandable -No webcam. Can’t really defend this. Even a 720p webcam would have been okay. -No card reader, minor inconvenience. -The power brick cord could be longer. I use a laptop stand and move my laptop around a lot. -The power brick does indeed get very hot as per other reviews. If you have carpet use a cellphone stand or cradle. It is never good to put power bricks on carpet, anyway, added heat transfer. Consultation: The ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 (2021) is a great price to performance laptop. It features amazing gaming performance and is a good daily driver. The screen, keyboard and speakers set for the standard for what a quality laptop should be. It’s portable if you need it to be and the aesthetics are great, you don’t get a Scar to be conservative. I’m very pleased with this purchase and feel extremely lucky to have a fully functional, near flawless unit. I would say get this at MSRP (not sure if $2499 is the new MSRP due to global shortages) but overall, the ticks all of the boxes in terms of be a powerful gaming laptop. ... show more

  • Great performance laptop, exceeded expectations.
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX RAM Size: 32 GB Hard Disk Size: 1 TB Graphics Description: GeForce RTX 3080 Style: 15.6" 165Hz QHD
Performed flawlessly out of the box. All of my uses with it so far have been easily handled by the processor, ram and gpu. Which includes browsing, watching movies and gaming on max settings (FFXIV, Lost Ark, Monster Hunter Rise, New World, Destiny 2 etc) all without much impact on the system. It gets a little hot during long sessions on some of the more demanding games but nothing extreme and with the cooling system it cools off impressively fast. Things of note. Be mindful when doing updates. Ran into a few snags where some things wouldn't work properly by getting the recommended updates from each app (MyAsus, Armory Crate, Windows Update, AMD (Redeon/Adrenalin Edition - Adrenalin edition seems to work better tho it comes with Radeon pre-installed which was causing issues with with a windows update or vice versa). After getting it sorted it all works fine. My one Con would be no MUX switch but I have bypassed that by using my TV (Samsung not even HDMI 2.1) as a monitor via a USB C to HDMI as a display port. Getting 1440p at 120hz or 4k at 60hz. Also with HDR capabilites tho on windows 11 pro (I opted for free the upgrade) that seems to be buggy. Nothing to do with the computer itself afaik just windows implementation of it. It does work tho, just be sure to get the cords with the right specifications if you want all the bells and whistles your TV or Monitor will support. • Not exactly subtle but perfect for gaming!
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H RAM Size: 16 GB Hard Disk Size: 1 TB Graphics Description: GeForce RTX 3070 Style: 15.6" 165Hz QHD
After spending many years with an old Alienware 17, I really needed an upgrade but wanted to wait until there was a real performance improvement over the current gen processors and graphics cards. I was very impressed with the Ryzen processor in the Zephyrus G14 last year and so was aiming to get a laptop with an AMD processor this time round. Initially my main options were the 2021 Zephyrus G15 and the 2021 Strix G15 both with the RTX 3070. Having tried the Zephyrus I found that I did not appreciate the extremely loud fans under load and the fact that its unique design with the ergo-lift hinge meant that all the hot exhaust was blown right below the display panel. While I'm sure that ASUS has done their due diligence in making sure that it did not adversely affect the life of the display, I found myself uncomfortable with it. Moving on to the Strix, it wasn't due to launch until April. Thus when I saw the SCAR 15 available on Amazon, I Immediately placed my order. In the two days I've had it, I've found myself falling in love with it. Don't get me wrong, it does have it's flaws; It has no webcam (which is an unacceptable omission for most, especially in the pandemic era of constant video conferencing), the Aesthetic is not exactly what one would call subtle ( especially not compared to the sleeper gaming laptops available in the Zephyrus lineup) and it weighs more than all its thin and light competition. These flaws however weren't much of a compromise at all for me; I use an external webcam anyways (which offers much better quality than most any laptop webcam) so the lack of an inbuilt option did not bother me at all. I love the gamer aesthetic with the RGB backlit keyboard, lightbar underlighting the chassis and the keyboard deck being transparent on one half, allowing you to catch a glimpse of the internals. With all the lighting turned off however, it would drastically decrease the amount of interest the laptop garners. And finally on to its size and weight, coming from an era when gaming laptops used to be genuinely desktop replacements and moving them a truly herculean task, the SCAR 15 is quite a flyweight in comparison. Even in comparison with the Zephyrus G15, considered one of the best thin and lights, the SCAR 15 is less than a pound heavier. This additional mass also allows it to run the full power RTX 3070 mobile rather than the low power available on thinner laptops. In conclusion, If you'd like a gaming laptop with great performance and enjoy the gamer aesthetic, This if definitely the laptop for you. If you do feel like you can wait and mind paying extra for the bells and whistles such as the opto-mechanical keyboard, you might be better served waiting for the STRIX G15 to launch. As for me, I'm going to go enjoy my wonderful new laptop! ... show more

  • Dead Out of The Box
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H RAM Size: 16 GB Hard Disk Size: 1 TB Graphics Description: GeForce RTX 3070 Style: 15.6" 165Hz QHD
Laptop looks fantastic, and the RGB works great, but mine had an issue with a RAM slot that wouldn't allow it to boot whenever it was populated, so I essentially had an overpriced keyboard.
