  • Impressive laptop with lot's of power
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H RAM Size: 16 GB Hard Disk Size: 1 TB Graphics Description: GeForce RTX 3070 Style: 15.6" 165Hz QHD
First the current price of $2499 is a bit disappointing. I did not pay $2499 nor would I. I get the current hardware crisis, but still sad to see, maybe unavoidable, I guess. Pros: -The 5800H+3070 is a great combo. -Nvidia 3070 hits the advertised 115w usage in all games and will hover around 125-130 in most titles. Incredibly good GPU for 1440p. Temps (custom fan curve) never exceed 85c even in games like Cypberpunk. Coming from a 2070-maxq I see about a 18 to 22 fps difference at 1080p, and at 1440p the framerate is the equivalent to 1080p at max settings. ex: Shadow Of The Tomb Raider (dlss+RT med): 2070mq 1080p 71fps, 3070 1080p 93 fps, 3070 1440p 73 fps. Good performer all around. -The Ryzen 5800H is immensely powerful and can handle any task. It is a great fit for the 3070. The chip runs hot so a custom fan profile is needed to keep it within 42c-55c. The 5800H is power efficient and works great on battery. 8C/16T should perform well for years to come. -Thermals- Good overall, custom profiles are needed for the fans to hit maximum RPM. The turbo and performance take too long to hit full stride. The silent profile is great for just browsing and keeps reasonable temps. The fan’s do get extremely loud but never drown out the speakers. The fans become noticeable around 3000rpm. I use headphones for gaming anyway. -Mechanical keyboard. It’s excellent. The keyboard is great to touch, keys are responsive and have good depth. It’s loud and clickly, I love it; to each his own lol. The RGB is fully customizable, and Asus provides great software to create your own look. It is fun to type on, no complaints. The screen. It is almost perfect, just a smidge of led glow on the bottom left-hand corner, not distracting at all. Zero dead pixels. The brightness is great for indoors, might have to turn it down a little in dark rooms, sufficient for outdoors. The colors are accurate, and Asus armory crate provides some useful profiles and customizations (game visuals). I lucked with my screen, feels good to win the panel lottery. -Speaker. The speakers sound amazing. I also own a Googlebook Pixel Go and the speakers are better than the vast majority of premium laptops, that is until I tried the Scar 15. The speakers get very loud, lots of detail and bass, very little distortion at high volumes. I would recommend using Dolby Atmos software (Windows store $14) or Equalizer APO (free) to bring out the most in the sound. -Trackpad. Not much to say as I use a mouse. It’s responsive and the ability to switch between numlk and trackpad is useful. -I/O. I like the fact that the right side of the laptop is clean, nothing more annoying than having the headphone jack and power on the right side. Cons: -I/O. I think one more USB 3.2 port would have been nice. -No Thunderbolt, this is Ryzen so understandable -No webcam. Can’t really defend this. Even a 720p webcam would have been okay. -No card reader, minor inconvenience. -The power brick cord could be longer. I use a laptop stand and move my laptop around a lot. -The power brick does indeed get very hot as per other reviews. If you have carpet use a cellphone stand or cradle. It is never good to put power bricks on carpet, anyway, added heat transfer. Consultation: The ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 (2021) is a great price to performance laptop. It features amazing gaming performance and is a good daily driver. The screen, keyboard and speakers set for the standard for what a quality laptop should be. It’s portable if you need it to be and the aesthetics are great, you don’t get a Scar to be conservative. I’m very pleased with this purchase and feel extremely lucky to have a fully functional, near flawless unit. I would say get this at MSRP (not sure if $2499 is the new MSRP due to global shortages) but overall, the ticks all of the boxes in terms of be a powerful gaming laptop. ... show more

  • Lot of power that doesn't reach the monitors...
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX RAM Size: 32 GB Hard Disk Size: 1 TB Graphics Description: GeForce RTX 3080 Style: 15.6" 165Hz QHD
What is the point of a 3080 in a laptop, if you don't have a discrete displayport or preferably 2! No MUX switch, means that the 3080 has to send its signal through the AMD iGPU. Displayport over USB-C only, no MUX switch, means the 3080 sends signal through AMD iGPU, then over a bandwidth limited USB-C port, to an adapter, to your monitor. I have a 360hz 1080p monitor, that I can only run at 240hz because USB-C cannot handle 360hz @1080p, not enough bandwidth. The hdmi port, is 2.0, not 2.1. That means that you cannot get more than 120hz on my 1440p monitor through hdmi and it won't do 360hz on my 1080p either. To top it off, you can only run the HDMI + USB-C to Displayport for these 2 monitors w/ the 1440p @ 100hz and the 1080p @ 240hz WITHOUT the integrated monitor running (laptop cover closed). Again, probably because everything is running through the damn iGPU. This is not a cheap low-end laptop. It's over $3k. This is like having a racing motor in a vehicle that cannot translate all of its horsepower to the tires, but only a portion of it. BAD DESIGN and very disappointing! Other than that, this is a beast of laptop, w/ a nice integrated 1440p, 165hz monitor with 100% dci-p3 color gamut. But then it is cut off at the knees by lack of port selection. One usb-c only, 3 USB A, no dedicated display port, and HDMI 2.0 instead of 2.1. Now, if you have just the laptop monitor, nothing else connected, the 3080 also travels through the iGPU it seems! This means you cannot remove the iGPU power draw overhead and underclock the 3080 for better battery life purposes when not plugged in to the wall, or plugged in via usb-c power. This means you are limited to the Vega (why AMD, why still Vega on Cezanne 5000 series?) iGPU w/ 3080 turned off on battery power if you want any time on battery that is useful. The armoury crate software won't let you mess w/ the Manual over/under-clocking mode (used loosely here, since you are just determining max tdp power draw for each) for CPU / GPU power draw on battery... When you need it the most! You have to rely on 3rd party software and even then, due to the iGPU drawing overhead you can't get the 3080 minimum power draw low enough to compensate for the iGPU power draw overhead and the 3080 simply ceasing to function w/o the power the iGPU is drawing to prolong battery life. Just too many watts of constant draw total. A $3k laptop should be able to power its own monitor and 2 additional monitors w/o gimping performance, without adapter cables regardless. It has a more than capable 3080 in it for crying out loud. Very disappointing! A mux switch would help, which bypasses the iGPU when using the discrete 3080, but really there should be dedicated display port, if not 2, and an additional usb-c port anyways. If you are using your usb-c for display port, you no longer have a usb-c port for anything else...Power delivery? nope data transfer? nope And w/ only 3 usb-A ports, i have to use one usb-a port attached to a 4-port USB-A hub since any laptop cooling pad worth a damn has 2 usb plugs to power it, leaving just 1 port for keyboard, mouse, headset, etc. Now, if you have a wireless headset as i do, it also needs a port (in my case, 2 so as to power the extra battery). This laptop is so close to being really top of the line, but it just falls on its face in the areas that matter! What good is a 3080 driving 300-400 fps in a game like CS GO, if you can't power a monitor above 240hz? They have to be on par or or the monitor simply can't display all the frames generated, literally a 100+ frames are simply never shown on screen. Several versions offer a 300hz, 360hz built-in display on these laptops, but nobody is competitively gaming full time on a 15" screen...so, that makes no sense either. All the right side has for ports on the laptop is that useless proprietary port thing-a-mabob (keystone) that is useless for most everyone. It really is maddening that the port selection and lack of dedicated display port take a very powerful laptop and make you use it like a much cheaper laptop that would cost around $1,000 less due to a less powerful gpu only generating enough frames for 240hz @ 1080p. So close, yet so far. ... show more
