  • Almost there...5th Edition Copyright 2012
What is not mentioned anywhere in the study guide, and I suppose Delmar ( the publisher ) leaves it up to logic or common sense, that, in addition to this study guide, one needs to go to the ASE web site and download their 24 page Composite Vehicle Type 3 Reference Booklet due to the fact about 20 percent of the questions in this study guide are directly related to the information listed in this ASE material. The 5th Edition questions do correspond to the current ( 2012 ) ASE Type 3 Reference Booklet, however, this begs the question as to whether or not earlier editions of this study guide are valid? Personally, I don't think they are considering the technological changes made over the last decade or so. It is doubtful the composite vehicle questions of the earlier editions match up to the Type 3 booklet. What one is left with is the choice of purchasing the latest edition of the study guide in order to gain the most current valid information. With this being said, this 5th Edition study guide is comprehensive in the range and complexity of the systems it covers, yet, before one dives into this guide, they must read and get-to-know the composite vehicle if one wants to test their diagnostic skills. I've taken the ASE CBT ( computer based testing ) recently, and although I feel the Delmar series of study guides are the best bang for the buck that is out there, it seems to me that even the latest editions questions are lagging a bit behind the testing format questions currently in use by ASE. I believe a study guide should be on par with the format of a test one is to take and it seems Delmar, if I can use this analogy, is still running electronically controlled carbureted engines in a multi-port fuel injection engine world. It would be nice to see Delmar leave the confines of the editing desk and fret less about typos in order to be more concerned with keeping on par with current technology. The bottom line is that one is better off having this study guide as a reference than attempting to take the L1 test cold turkey. However, one will have to fully absorb the information contained in this guide and be very familiar with the composite vehicle to have a viable attempt at passing the L1. To do this will require a commitment of time to devote to reading and absorbing technical material and then addressing one's weak diagnostic areas with even more reading if necessary, e.g., one might discover a weakness in interpreting what various counts of HC, CO, Co2, OX and NOX mean to various engine performance problems. The task list in the study guide touches on various system components but is by no means as comprehensive as textbook material would be on vehicle emissions and performance subsystems. ... show more

  • Good information, but ridden with lots of mistakes in the book
I have had my ASE L1 since they first started, and since it was time for my recertification, I thought it would be a good idea to get a current study guide to bone up before taking the test. I do have to say that the book has a lot of good information in it, that shows the logic behind why one answer is better than the rest of the three answers, but I discovered almost immediately when I started reading through the book, that there were some serious issues with the content of the book. As I was reading through the book, it was apparent that whomever did the editing and proof reading of the book before they sent it off for printing, did not do a very good job of checking for accuracy in the working of printed material. However, what concerned me most was that in the two practice test sections, there were about 51 mistakes that I found that may lead a test taker who is not doing IM240 smogs everyday, to get some of the wrong information when they are studying for the L1 certification. For a person like myself who does smog inspections and smog repairs everyday, I understood what they were trying to convey in the text, however I am at a loss of why a better job of proof reading for content accuracy wasn't done before the book was printed out, but even then, I am sure I am not the only person who has found these mistakes, so I would also offer the question as to why the publisher of the L1 study guide didn't also issue a few paper pages outlining the mistakes in the book so the customer could go into the book and make the corrections with a pen so the correct information was given. I worked for Toyota and Nissan dealerships as a shop foreman for about 17 years, and when they still has the book form of repair manuals that were sent to the dealership when a new model of vehicle came out, certainly there would be mistakes in the book, so periodically we would get printed pages from the factory with the correct information to be placed in the factory repair manual that had adhesive on the back of it to cover up the incorrect page. So I don't know why the publisher of this L1 study guide couldn't have done something similar to this to keep all the information up to date and correct for the test taker. It may sound trivial for me to complain about all the mistakes in the book, but since I took my L1 recertification last night, I assure any technician who is going to take this test, that it is definitely harder than the last one that I took 5 years ago, and even though the recertification L1 test that I took last night only had 49 questions in it, I still took almost 2 hours to complete it since most of the questions require you to read very carefully exactly what they are asking you, or else you will get the question wrong since many of the answers are similar, but they do have slight information differences in them that will make you take your time in reading them slowly before putting that pencil to the answer sheet. At any rate, for anyone who is taking the ASE L1 test, good luck and take your time with the test since you have 4 hours to finish it, it isn't a race to see who can get done first. ... show more

  • Nice prep book for L1 exam
Nice prep book for L1 exam. If one can pass the 6 practice exams in this book then one can most probably pass the L1 exam. For my previous two re-certs for the L1, I used an old Mitchell prep book published by DELMAR dated 2004. But this old Mitchell book was now far too outdated and it looks like they are no longer published under the Mitchell name so I opted based on Amazon reviews to try this newer DELMAR, Fifth Edition which is cited on the DELMAR website as being based on the newest ASE Composite Vehicle Type 3. I did last week take and pass this my fourth L1 re-cert exam after studying the DELMAR prep book for several days so it did the trick for me. However when I took the L1 exam this time there were a good few questions that contained elements of for example newer EVAP system components in diagrams that were not yet used in the DELMAR book. There also seemed to be references to other newer system components on the L1 exam than in the DELMAR prep book so it seems to me that it is ready for an update. I also noticed that the L1 exam questions were written to be more challenging around what would be the correct answer than I recall in the past and in this respect also I found the DELMAR book to be a bit behind the curve. However overall it serves its purpose and is a good prep guide and tool. ... show more
