    • More than acceptable
After taking the ASE Engine Performance ASE test, I failed it by four questions. I will have to retake it in a few months. Nevertheless this book gives you a great addition of knowledge to add on preexisting knowledge. If you are planning on getting this book without any prior understanding of Engine Performance and just passing the test, forget it. The fact is that most of these questions will not be on the ASE test. There are 300 practice questions in the book. A lot of them are good for info. And some of them are not even worth looking at. Common sense questions that you will never see on the test such as " what is the first step in the diagnosis process ". Knowledge such as this is basic and there are a few questions like this in the book. But trust me, they will not be on the actual test. There are a few areas it falls short at. But again with such a large amount of questions and explanations, you learn quite a bit. So I would not give it a bad rating. One area it falls short in is scan tool diagnosis. Such as live data diagnosis. Even though I was already prepared for these kinds of questions, it was not thanks to this book(I studied various online practice and study test). In this book there are few scan tool diagnostic questions that involve interpreting live data. But on the test, you are bound to see at least 4 or 5 questions about interpreting live data. Another area it fell short in to me was Emission controls. There was not enough thorough symptom and diagnostic info on the EVAP system or questions. I was seeing questions such as " a customer complains they cannot fill the gas tank pass half full ". There is no info on this kind of symptom in the book. Of course I dont know if that counted towards my score, but there were two similar questions like this one. So I feel it should have been covered. The Engine Performance ASE test has a lot of diagram questions. So I also feel that there should have been more of those in the book instead of putting those simple ones. Electrical diagnosis is one of my weak points. And there are a few questions on this, but I feel there should have been more. Last but not least there are some disputable questions and a couple of small errors. Im not going to go over the small errors I found. Regardless of the cons, for the money it's well worth it to increase knowledge and understanding of this subject. I would definitely recommend it to anyone planning to take the ASE test. And I will buy the other versions as well. In fact I bought the Engine Repair version and I passed that test. But of course Engine Performance is a bit more advanced. ... show more

Some of the questions in this book were almost verbatim to the questions on the test, book was very helpful the study guides helped me feel very well prepared for the actual exam. Passed 1st try with this

    • Delmar ASE Test Preparation - A8 Engine Performance Study Guide is good, but not great!
I have been looking at several ASE study guides for the purposes of using them to help students in an automotive technology program prepare for ASE tests. The Delmar ASE Test Preparation - A8 Engine Performance Study Guide by Cengage is good, but not great! They clearly need to spend more time in editing! Either the person who wrote/edited this study guide does not use English as a second language, or really tied-one-on the night before editing this study guide! It is riddled with typographical errors, syntax errors and incorrect word usage. If your one of those people who gets really frustrated by typos and mis-spelled words, you are going to need some Xanax before you work with this particular literary masterpiece. If you use this guide, know that several questions have the incorrect answer. If you find yourself scratching your head on a few of these answers, don't instantly assume that the book is right. I have taken more ASE and state renewal tests than I can count. I have been an ASE certified Master with L1 and L2 credentials, so I have lots of experience taking these tests. This guide comes pretty close to a lot of the questions that one would expect to see on an actual initial or a renewal A8 test. It is for this reason that I gave this book 3 stars. The content is probably the best of the guides I have been looking at. I decided to keep this one. It just boggles my mind how a major text book company like Delmar could allow this study guide to have escaped with so many editing blunders and not even bother to revise it. Rest assured, however, that if it is ASE style questions you seek, if you can overlook the typos, spelling and grammar, (kind of like how you are overlooking all of my errors LOL!!) than I think you will find this a quality guide. I think it is better than Motor Age (has far more practice questions) and at least as good as the ASE Test Prep and Study Guide (Halderman Automotive Series) 2nd Edition by Pierson Publishing. I specifically mention the 2nd edition because the 3rd edition that is dated 2019 is almost identical to the 2nd edition, only the questions are in a different order. I mention this because the older edition can be had far cheaper used than buying a newer edition with almost the exact same content. I hope this helped! Enjoy! ... show more

    • Become the greatest you've imagined
I havent read this book yet to be honest. I got it as a re-cert study guide. Plus the dealer I work at has version4 of the book series. Version 5 is more comprehensive, has more test questions and I feel has better coverage of the material you're going to study and test on. So please, do your work, study hard and pass the test. Dont read this book the day before hoping itll turn you into some sort of Albert einstein of the automotive world because it wont. So good luck, apply yourself and oh yeah there's a left brake light out on that free multipoint checkout. ... show more

    • Useful Training for ASE Preparation
I used this book as my primarily preparation to take an ASE test for the first time. I had already taken automotive classes at an Education Cultural Complex (part of San Diego City College District), then worked in the industry as an auto mechanic for two years. There were no exact matches to questions in the book that actually showed up on the ASE exams. By using these practice tests as a guide to see where I was weak worked out pretty well. When I had problems answering questions, I would resort to my text books or other sources to beef up my knowledge. I felt that this book worked for me using that approach to prepare for the exam. I also felt that my knowledge as a mechanic increased. I passed the exam easily. I don't believe that this book alone is the silver bullet to pass an ASE exam. It is a great tool to use in order to see where your knowledge stands. I even purchased practice exams from ASE and only one exact question showed up on the test. There are some quality control issues such as questions that don't have the correct illustration. There is one or two like that per book. ... show more
