  • Well built device, much better than standalone units.
When you want a real dehumidifier buy this. My old standalone units might be rated for a lot of pints but this is a heavy duty well built machine. I'm guessing that this is tripling the water output over a device that was rated for 75% of what this was.

  • Zero customer support
Frankly I have no idea how this manufacturer continues to do as well as they do... I called customer service twice; the first time they gave me the cold shoulder, and literally offered no help whatsoever; the second call went better than the first, but still their support was not geared towards helping me answer the questions that I had. The product itself is well made. It takes a couple of months for it to settle in and stop rattling; but otherwise decent. My strongest advice is to improve customer service. For $4k+, I would expect a modicum of help. ... show more

  • Very unimpressive
The AprilAire 1870 is rated for 7,200 sqft, my house is in Houston is only 9yo, and less than 2,2,00 sqft. I also bought the pump, wall sensor, etc. and had it all installed by a certified installer. This unit struggles mightily and I can’t recommend it to anyone based on my experience. It’s so bad that I had to pull my old floor standing dehumidifier out of storage to help. ... show more

  • Able to keep 3,400 sq ft in Southern Louisiana at 55% RH
This 1870 XL Pro pulls about 6-7 gallons of water out of the air of my house each day to maintain 55% RH in a 3,400 sq. ft. house in Southern Louisiana. This is an 8 person, 1 dog household... so, lots of showers, loads of laundry, and exterior door openings/closings. It’s currently the end of March so the weather is mild but nearly every morning is 95-100% RH outdoors. I was on the upper end of the square footage recommendation for the smaller unit but I’m in a humid region so I went for the larger one. It does have to run several hours per day to keep up with Louisiana humidity so I’m glad I went with the big one. After a little over a week of use it’s on pace to cost just shy of $1 a day in direct cost to run (uses about 11 kWh per day according to Kill-A-Watt readings). It creates more heat than I’d expected which creates indirect costs to run during cooling months. This isn’t the fault of the unit itself, just the physics of the direct expansion refrigeration cycle. If you’re keeping the house at 72F, for example, and this allows you to set the thermostat to 75F and remain comfortable then it might save you money. Since I’d historically just suffered with the thermostat at 76F (and usually around 65-70% RH) I can’t really raise it much higher even with the dehumidification. So, it creates more AC run time in at a given temperature as the dehumidifier raises the ambient temperature. Whether you can offset this or achieve some savings by raising your thermostat and maintaining the same or better comfort level will depend on your current habits. In my case it’s going to be an additional expense during cooling months (Yes, March is often an AC month for Louisiana). During heating months (yes, it’s typically quite humid even in the winter here) this will help warm the house and some of the annual indirect expense to run it over the summer will be offset. I won’t know how this plays out for at least a year. The unit is pretty quiet but does create a lot of white noise if you’re in the room with it. Once it’s in the attic and plumbed in it’s barely audible in the living space. It’s much quieter than the AC though. For the first few days there were some squeaks and what not from the styrofoam insulated chassis. I guess the adjacent insulation panels rubbed each other under the compressor vibration a bit. If I put my hands on it to dampen the vibration it stopped. This went away after a few hours of compressor runtime... presumably after the contact points between the styrofoam were became burnished. In the end I bought it to improve indoor air quality anticipating an increase in operating expenses. It’s accomplishing that thus far. The house feels very ”crisp” at 75F and 55% RH (yes, March is often an AC month in Louisiana). Our towels now dry hanging on the hooks, if somebody leaves a wet footprint in the bathroom it evaporates within an hour or so (normally that might still be there 8-12 hrs later). I anticipate less mold and mildew but it’s not been in place long enough to see how this goes. ... show more

  • NO REPLACEABLE PARTS
I have this unit in my 33' x 40' x 12' outbuilding/shop. I primarily got it to keep my tools from rusting during my humid WI summers. I found when it's hot and sticky outside and opened the big overhead door, everything inside the shop would instantly sweat due to the cooler temps inside the building, from the concrete slab to all my cast iron machines and tools. This is the second one of these I've had - the first, a model 1770, lasted just under 5 years (two weeks inside the warranty, installed by an HVAC company). The compressor was leaking coolant. Come to find out Aprilaire dehumidifiers have NO REPLACEABLE PARTS. The whole unit had to be replaced, this time with the 1870, which replaced the discontinued 1770. My 1870 is now on year five and has been running each summer without issues (fingers crossed). I set the remote to 45% and it keeps my shop building there without a problem. They are fairly quiet (you hear a gentle whooshing sound) so long as you use 8" - 10" ductwork. I have the drain piped through the wall to the outside. The bottom line is that a., the warranty is only good if the unit is installed by a pro, and b., if anything goes wrong, you have to replace the entire unit. I understand the Honeywell units have replaceable parts, if that's important to you. ... show more

  • Worth every penny
While we didn't purchase this through Amazon I did want to write a review because that's just how good this unit is. We purchased it to go into our crawlspace, which is quite large. It's not fully encapsulated but it is sealed off and new poly has been put down. In a matter of 3 days, it went from 93% humidity to 55%. It is built like a tank, VERY quiet (especially if you use insulated ducting, which we used to push the dehumidified air to the other side of the crawlspace). Bottom line, if you're needing to get ride of humidity in an attic, basement, crawl or your whole house THIS is what you'll want to do it! ... show more

  • Problem with installation
What I like was the company's effort to be of almost immediate help. What I didn't like that that the installer came down with COVID-19 and his assistant had trouble installing the unit. We still can't get the humidity below 56%. I don't know if it is the installation or the unit. When things get back to normal, COVID -19-wise, I hope I can give Aprilaire a 5+ for product and service. ... show more
