  • Finally a quality Head Unit
2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GM12S-U: A one month update: I am extremely happy this purchase. Everything is working flawlessly over the month I have owned it. I dumped my XM/Sirius account and now use IHeart and other streaming options with Android Auto. The Google Maps is great with bluetooth Android Auto. If any problems crop up in the future, I will update again. But 5/5 right now. So far, so good. I used this to replace a proprietary HU (Rosen GM1210-Carshow). It was OK, but nowhere as nice or capable as this one. It cost 4 times as much as well. The install started out a bit overwhelming with all the connectors and wires that plug into the back. However, just by plugging the connectors in the back of the radio completes almost all the connections you need to make. The speakers and everything run through those connections. Most of the extra AV connectors are not used for a normal install. Just the ones for front and back cameras if you choose to hook them up. Running wires for the GPS, microphone and dash cam are a bit time consuming but easy to do. The speaker for doors and blinker sounds does need dampening. Way too loud, but a bit of electricians tape that covers about 75% of it works well. My door chime is not too loud now but my blinker sounds are louder than before which is a God send. I won't piss off people behind me any more after forgetting to turn off my blinker. I have everything working on mine and the display and most of the apps configured for my preference now. Everything seems to be functioning fine. The unit boots super fast, the backup camera is ready in seconds after starting the truck. My biggest learning curve now is getting used to Android Auto and how that works. It is really a cool system to be able to do mostly everything on the HU that normally could only be done on my phone. Navigation, audio apps, etc.... all work on the HU with Android Auto. I get in the truck turn it on and within about 5-10 seconds Android auto takes over and displays the nav and either Iheart radio or XM radio in split screen and begins playing. I did have one minor issue but it seems to no longer be a problem. I went out to start HU to do some configuring on it and it did not boot. No display, but it was at night and control buttons on the bottom edge lit up. I tried tapping them with no response. I tried tapping different places on the screen with no response. I shut the truck off and opened the door to make the unit shut down. When I restarted, I got the same problem. I tried several times and it would not fully boot. I came in an messaged Tech support. That was two days ago and other than an acknowledgement that they got my inquiry, I have not heard back about the problem. Anyway, I came back in and googled the problem and one suggestion was to put a paper clip in the RST (Reset) hole and hold it down for ten seconds. I did that and it rebooted fine. It happened later on and I put the paper clip back in and it did not reboot but just continued to boot almost immediatedly. Since then, I have cycled the unit many times with no more issues. So, I am going to ding customer service for not responding after two days....who knows if they ever will at this point. I read several reviews where they were very responsive and some not so much. But, bottom line is that other than that, I didn't need any hand holding to get it up and running. I do suggest the dash cam if you buy this unit. I also VERY HIGHLY suggest the backup camera. I used my existing back up camera and it hooked up just fine. If you are using a back up camera that displays guide lines, I suggest you turn them off however you do that with your existing camera. This head unit displays its own grid lines and you don't need two sets. I think the camera that comes with this head unit does not natively display grid lines so it isn't an issue. I also got the OBDII scanner and installed it. I played with it for a few minutes and it worked good. It is going to be nice to configure the Torque App to display the gauges that I am interested in most.. Oh, one more thing, my FM reception seems quite good, speakers sound great, but I get almost no AM reception. I don't live near any cities, but it didn't want to pick up any stations on a scan and the ones I normally can at least get partially were very weak or out completely. I like talk radio, so I guess I will just have to use my Iheart and SXM apps via Android Auto. This unit does not have an XM antenna and is NOT compatible with regular XM reception. Only through the SXM app over the phone. Hopefully the black screen issue was a glitch and won't become a problem. If things change, I will come back to update, but after a few days and some testing, I think I am going to be quite happy. 4.5/5 ... show more

  • connectivity issues
the unit looks and fit nice in vehicle installation was easy and plug and play the connectivity is not great. i like having wireless android auto that is what i wanted since every unit i have had wired is always loosing connection. android auto connects right away and seems to work ok however when connected all other functions of radio that require data connection like auto update of the clock do not work. i have set the time zone and tried every setting of clock and will not hold time after shut off. clock will auto update to correct time when radio unit has data connection. also apps that were downloaded like pandora, iheart radio, spotify all do not work on radio unless you use them through android auto. radio has video outputs for other screens for passangers but does no good to have other screens if you cannot tether data from your phone to stream when wireless android auto is working. so one or the other only. i did find that if i use wired android auto i can use hot spot on phone for data but one always cuts out. was told by support need to have a sim card to make wireless android auto and to also have data for other radio features. ... show more

  • Great in my 09 Silverado once I figure out the MIC problem
Put this in my 2009 Silverado which already had an aftermarket head unit but wanted Apply CarPlay. Overall, I am really liking it. No, it is not perfect but I have never had one that was. There is always some major flaw. But, once I figured out the MIC thing explained below, I have to say that this is one of the best i have had. I really like the interface using Android Auto as the OS. It is well organize and the CPU/RAM combination make it very smooth. Understand that if you have an iPhone, you will probably, like me, be using the CarPlay app mostly. This is like any other app installed that overlays the screen. You are still in the Android OS but interacting with Apples app. It does hiccup sometime when first connecting - YouTube music where I have to hit retry once, for example - but overall is a good experience. I have not tried using an Android based phone but I image it would work just as well. No problems with boot time that others mention since it does not really shutdown for me, it just goes into a low-power mode. Maybe it was added after the other reviews were made. For updates to the OS, they are actually coming regularly right now. In the 2 months I have owned the unit there have been two. Both have added features so its good to see them actively developing. Not sure how long this will last but at least its not like other no-name Chinese companies that put something out and never fix anything. The one major grip I have with it is the hand-free/Bluetooth MIC. It comes with an microphone built into the head unit as well as an external mic you run to a different part of the vehicle to do, I assume, some kind of balance-differential for noise cancelling. Sounds great in theory but the reality is it is useless, at least, in my install. With the internal mic connected, people could just barely hear me if I shouted - seems that all of the road noise and vibrations from the truck were being picked up by it. Based on emails from their tech support (more on that later), they recommended I open the unit to disconnect the internal mic and simply rely on the external mic. After a great deal of trial and error with trying to use both, that was the setup I settled on. Now I can have fairly clear conversions. About their tech support, they seemed responsive, usually less then 24 business hours (they are closed on weekends). I first tried their support email on the companies main web site. They answered my question but then said to use their Amazon US support email. I have asked several questions over several weeks and here is a summation of their responses: 1. For Amazon US, they said to use the Amazon re-sellers email address "us-techsupport at qq.com" (make sure to include your order number). 2. To adjust different input (BT, amp out, etc.) volumes: Setting-->Car--->Factory setting-->Enter password 126-->Voice-->Radio 3. Cannot remove the built in music app. 4. Tried using the Torque OBD2 Reader, useless. It would kind of work but the computer would start going crazy after a while. Tech support said to stop using it because it was "incompatible" with my truck, whatever that means. You can uninstall the app but it will just reinstall on next reboot. 5. Switched out the obd2 reader with their front-facing camera. Works well, actually. It mounts as an SD card with an .apk file on it (standard Android installation file) which you get to through the head units file manager. Run that and you will be able to control how it records, sound, etc. and can play back files. 6. There is only one EQ sound setting for all inputs. It would be nice to control each individually. 7. Cannot control the list of inputs that are looped through by the steering wheel control so you cannot skip ones you do not use. 8. Attached is the picture THEY sent me on how to detach the internal MIC. ... show more
