Description

An American Approach to World Percussion offers Western-trained percussionists a systematic approach from which to draw on their experience as drumset players and rudimental performers, and apply that knowledge to a variety of world percussion instruments. Applications for djembe, doumbek, tambourines, shakers and more are combined, often with four-part coordination. In addition, techniques are frequently interchanged among instruments to demonstrate the commonality of approaches. While this is not a substitute for traditional study of these instruments, An American Approach to World Percussion is a comprehensive study of world percussion from an American jazz perspective. It should also broaden the horizons of those already familiar with traditional applications of these instruments by offering a jazz sensibility. Above all, the student is encouraged to use this material to ignite their own imagination to develop a personal connection with the vast world of world music. Includes over one hour of video instruction. Read more

  • A Great Resource for Percussionists from Beginners to the very Advanced
Tom is an extraordinarily talented musician, teacher, and author. I'm a novice percussionist, and feel I made an excellent choice beginning by taking Skype lessons with him. The book and accompanying DVD are beautifully clear and concise, which helps me stay organized and on track with practice. One thing I especially appreciate about his approach to teaching is his consistent attention to helping students develop their own creativity while developing excellent technique. This book has material that seems likely to be helpful for musicians all across the spectrum from beginners to very advanced. I expect it will be helping me make progress throughout my life. I highly recommend "An American Approach to World Percussion" for anyone looking to grow as a musician. You are certain to benefit from Tom's clear, creative, and friendly instruction. ... show more

Very good book. It is a good way to learn hand drums in a high level. Also any drummer that play the 4 normal set drums, can apply these hand drums instruments and using them as it was a regular drum set.

  • For experienced musicians.
If you already have a background in music, can read music its pretty good. If you don’t like me, not such a good deal.

  • Get this book/DVD!!!
I'm a seasoned drum set play and a "legit" percussionist (played in the US.Navy Band-Washington DC for 30 years.). This book and DVD is a huge filler to the gap between the legit/drum set player and the "world percussionist". Tom's references to Joe Morello and Ted Reed teaching materials provides excellent material to apply to his vast variety of instruments. The DVD is very well produced and really shows off Tom's instructional methods. (Heck, if I can figure it out, ANYBODY CAN). This is a great book.DVD!!! ... show more

  • Take your percussion playing to the next level!
This book clearly details how to apply ones western percussion knowledge (rudiments, drumset, reading skills, etc) to a variety of world percussion; djembe, doumbek, riq, pandeiro, cajon and more. The section on shakers is especially inspiring. I'm set up my hybrid kit like a drumset and playing examples I had learned years ago out of the Ted Reed book within minutes! I'm eagerly awaiting a follow up method! Teasley encourages you to use this as a starting point to create your own exercises. Only book of it's type! ... show more

I'd give this book 6 stars if it was an option! The DVD works seamlessly with the book! It's so great to have a resource that combines great original ideas with the time tested Syncopation book.

  • A must have for percussionists
I've played percussion for years and am primarily self-taught. Tom's book and DVD have helped me become more grounded in the rudiments and the fundamentals, which takes my playing to another level. This package is highly recommended. It's easy to use, and the book and DVD work hand-in-hand to improve your understanding of what you're doing and your execution of it. ... show more
