Description

Training Pads are ideal for puppies and dogs that stay indoors for long periods of time. What you should do; Unfold the training pad and place it in a confined area. (Blue plastic side down). It is important to place your puppy or dog on the training pad several times a day in order to get him used it. on the average, a puppy must relieve himself every few hours, based on his age (a 2 month old puppy every 2 hours, a 3 month old every hours etc). If your pet relieves himself somewhere other than the designated spot where the pad is placed, bring him back to the correct spot immediately. Keep in mind that your pet will have to relive himself shortly after a meal and will need to eliminate more frequently during the summer when his water intake is higher. The minute your dog begins to relieve himself on the pad, be sure to use cures like “go potty”. You should use this cue every time that your dog relives himself on the pad so that he associates the phrase with the action of elimination. Every time that your pet used the pad successfully, make sure that you give him a treat and lots of praise. Treating helps your dog to understand that he is doing what you want him to do. Always remember to dispose of soiled pads and replace them as needed. When your pet begins to relieve himself on the pads, on consistent basic, it is time to begin moving the pad closer to the door. Keep moving the pads closer to the door until they are actually outside. At this time, the training process will be complete.

These are super basic. They are not great, but they are budget friendly. I have used all types of puppy pads, and some of the very expensive ones may have an added benefit, but not enough for me to keep buying them. These.. well, the price is right. I have them for my elderly cat who does not want to use a litter box despite having them in various convenient locations and kept super clean. So, since she likes going on a puppy pad and seems pretty consistent with using them, I go ahead and buy them. I go through a lot. Here are my thoughts on why I think they are worth the purchase: Yes, they are thin, they can leak (see below), and that they *should* have a better quality being the AKC brand. However, these are just like the other cheap ones in its category- thin, can leak, no frills. Yet, these are cheaper than the cheapest among other cheap, low quality brands. SO, for a purchase within the category of CHEAP, BUDGET puppy pads, these stand out in terms of price (since they are same as other cheapies). NOW, compared to another quality/price tier of puppy pad-- where they are thicker, perhaps more absorbent, might have carbon, and multiple layers, and draw moisture away from top.. they are pretty good.. but also priced way way more. It is a toss up. What are your needs? Kinda like 1 ply smooth commercial TP vs triple ply multi textured TP. Both work, one you may use more of, the other you will pay much more for. Both are fine depending on needs and preference. As for the leaking.. I notice that is more a matter of WHERE the urine is deposited and how much. If the urine comes out quick with decent volume AND it is near or on the edge of the pad.. then, yeh, it will leak to the floor. I haven't noticed it leak directly through when the pee is in the middle. I tend to put down a few layers at once just so I can "grab and go" the spent puppy pad. Sometimes I put down a reusable puppy pad (large washable pad) OR a towel.. then these on top. I think my cat likes the additional padded feel and it also helps any leakage or over shoots. I dont just use a towel or a reusable pad on its own because unlike these pads.. the towl/reusable tend to smell AND I would still have to go through multiple of them a day to make it work (sometimes I do-- use a combo of big towel/reusable, then smaller tea towels on top.. really just using these disposable pads are way easier and more cleanly). I have considered a puppy pad holder tray.. but Like I said, I go through multiple per day because I try to grab them almost as soon as they have been used. These do a fine enough job. When it came time to buy another package, the 100 count I had purchased was not available. I took a moment to look at other brands (of this style) as well as some of the really "good" ones that I liked in the past (which now have mixed reviews about changed quality with still same high price).. and I simply came back to this American Kennel Club puppy pad product to see if they had it in the 150 count. They do, and so I ordered (a few minutes ago). Make it a subscribe and save item for even greater cost reduction. And so I decided to write this review. Let you know my experience and why I am making a point to buy this again despite my freedom to choose among every other offering available :) Hence, my 5 stars. I keep buying them! I hope this helped you, one way or another. Your needs may be different than mine and you will want to look into other types.. or your needs may be similar and will appreciate what these have to offer. Basic, simple, lightly fragranced, and inexpensive. PS. I included a pics that show what it looks like underneath a pile of urine. I have tried various training pads for my dogs in the past. These are more absorbent, are a great size, have a nice fragrance, are easy to unfold, and are very competitively priced.

I feel like they have changed quality or entire product. Either way it's gone downhill in every way. But I still keep them on autoship until i find the best one again. Scroll WAY down for 2021 best use for me. (Only ever used for dachshunds so I don't know what or how bigger dogs pee stream force/speed would do-i imagine terrible job) So to get through using these even though they sort of seep urine. After many learning and failures I do a rotation. I lay 2-3 out and keep another fresh on underneath each. Once a dog decides they wont use the pad anymore I toss that one and the bottom is now the top layer. Put new underneath that. So constantly repeating pattern. It's almost no big deal that they seep just smidge now because of doubling them up but not really losing or wasting product. They do smell pretty bad when the urine dries. Since I have doing pee pads for 15+years I have done so many things to help (plastic grass mat over pee pad then tray on bottom. I think my pooch at the time liked this most but I dont always have a quick place ro rinse or clean (connect hose to side of house and bring around was just too much. A bucket gross, bathtub gross becauseI needed daily for my own back pain so just not accessible 100% of time to clean it).if i had a laundry sink I probably could have kept this up. I have tried cardboard piece under the pee pad (then my upgrade was to put big cardboard picee in trash bag (tie shut and wrap the knot out of the way) then pee pad over that so i can sort of wipe clean that plastic layer-it all held together well but the one time my little senior pup put 2 paws on and 2 paws off and dipped to pee made such a mess that I didnt want to make a new cut cardboard deal. Because the pee pads are just a like 2 inches off on all sides to be useful to dachshunds my kiddo would do rhe 2 front paws on one side and then 2 paws almost on but dip/pee move was on edge it was like a massive capillary action mess underneath. That is the worst because so much gets sucked under. So I tried 2 pee pads together with absorbent part each on outside. That was helpful sort of... but super wasteful because I got sick of cleaning the back off to get to actually use the inteded side. I tried doing 2,3,4, etc all sort of overlapped and that works if dog goes in enough (couldn't yell at my lil old gal because technically she was doing what I said... "go potty on the paper" she comes back wagging butt and proud because she knows she did good as I run to clean up the mess that is quickly spreading underneath. I have purchased one of those plastic picnic tablecloths to lay out so pee pads can go on that but still those times she missed was awful. Sort of building up an "edge" was needed for her to feel her dip move wasnt clearing. (Awww the Long backs!). I have a few more solutions then upgrade solution then whole new approach then upgrade that all through the years. Since opening all these pee pads before i leave for work takes time i would open a bunch while watching tv.... then after all the trial and errors with these I still keep buying for some reason. (One rescue never knew what grass was/felt like or that she could go potty on it and even how to go potty during walks (she held her bladder for a 3mile walk than ran inside and upstairs to go on the pee pads. Background on her was used for terrible puppymill breeding and I imagine kept caged (stackable small cages) since she couldn't keep her "stand" legs for too long (minutes) and that grass scared her. (Took years of her ptsd specialness to overcome very few ways of a normal dog. She must've been starved for food or never had enough good momma nutrition because she made yuck choices to eat when her or her (my other dogs) siblings would GO. (trying not to say it). All this to say she NEEDED the pee pads once she learned that was what she liked using (initially just pee and pooh wherever inside never outside). I tried taking away the pads after a few years and learned after a few weeks that she just needs what she needs and not push too much. 2021 PREFERRED METHOD FOR THESE PADS: I now like the washable pee pad MAT. I get those in long sort of throw blanket size and put a few pee pads on that then no matter what its covered. I can quickly pick up the used disposable pee pad and poos that are never on the pee pad but always on the washable mat. Any pee spots that see a sort of wetness I can spray a bit of vinegar or shout on it and keep going that way when time to pick up, shake off and wash- most areas have been pretreated.... i can get sometimes 2 weeks on pee pad mat this way before needing to machine wash. (Unless enough mistakes are on actual pad that you can sort of smell its time NOW. I have several washable mats now to rotate. Technically I could just use that mat and shake that off each day and wash it but then im pucking up, shaking outside and washing then laying out to dry so much more often for my back pain to take (i tried this way to save money but i cant do all the work that often). So these most times leak proof disposable pads on the washable pee pad mat is the preferred way now. I have 3 mats to rotate. All laminate floors have been ruined just because of fosters, handicapped, and especially one rescue dachshund. •had dogs with kidney trouble so I encouraged lots or water he could fill an entire pee pad up-never knew that was possible (on a dachshund!!!) So I feel like the quality of amount of liquid it can absorb has changed. I cant imagine what a big dog would need. •puppy stage in a NO PETS apartment so he has to learn pee pads for 2 months before contact was over. •handicap dog that had no control so when it wasnt convenient to got outside for me to express his bladder or other part...like raining, blizzard, windchill below zero temps...I preferred using pee pads to prop him over. Used the pee pads for just in case in car, in his bed and especially in my bed. So I usually kept these suckers everywhere (purse too) because accidents happened many times a day. •used under water dish when my one special rescue gal (mentioned above) never really understood swallowing that last lapping drink at water bowl. That one pad lasted forever. •under couch covers ( couch cushions were microfiber so i kept several folded long flannel blankets over actual cushions then spread several overlapped then put a twin sheet over all that for the accidents from handicapped guy since he could wiggle out of every diaper/belly band. Eventually by 2020 version: folded long washable pee mats (almost length of couch then folded flannel sheet then the twin cotton fitted sheet over couch cushions. The pee mats made me sweat sitting on them so I needed cotton layers for my comfort but the washable pee pad mat for my peace of mind. Sorry, i have to allow every one of my babes on couch with me so i will do whatever means to protect whats underneath (couch, mattress, floor) to get to be with me or where they want. •Inside crate at bottom and one awkwardly spread into a folded up puppy blanket. That way no dog had to be on the pad all day smelling chemicals and the pee pad in one of the folds to fit square size of crate. So dog could sit on something more comfortable and nicer to feel yet if accidental happened the pee would stop by that level (where ever i put the pad). I never wanted rescue dog to feel hard cage so she got 2 blankets folded up with pee pad in the fold of top one. I was already always washing their blankets (drape on deck until made up a "load" for the washer) but could keep the bottom blanket still fresh. (Used to have to put up to my face to sniff each blanket to see how far went (before figuring out i should use these pee pads. I would have an absolute need for rescue girl to never feel hard surface so she'd get folded up flannel sheet, then soft blanket, then as i learned i needed 2 or 3 soft microfiber blankets because one gets scratched and pushed into whatever bed form she would make then i lost a layer for pee absorption...i just would keep adding more small blankets folded up for handicapped pooch so he didnt have to sit in wet layer (hoping his pee force during his accident made it so the urine would get through several layers making it a smaller wet spot on the top layer he would be laying in..making pretty much one washer load per dog crate. Ugh. Not being smart for several years before finally realizing i should use a pee pad between blanket layer before realizing to just shove one in a fold so right under a soft layer. (Dont forget i didnt want them having to smell the strong added odor of fresh scent or lemon, etc since dog's noses are stronger than ours). •In my bed under the dog blankets part where they sleep so my blankets and mattress cover were protected.(again before moving to folded in half washable pee pad then 2 folded long microfiber blankets. Then realizing still too much laundry if accident did occur so shoving disposable one in a folded layer but still under top soft blanket. •during rain or snow I put a few next to back door to catch the worst of the water, wet paws, muddy paws or snow clumps (remember dachshunds are low to the ground and can get chest on down full of mud, rain and snow. So always trying to catch a dog running at full speed on way inside before having dirty paws all over house. Pick the pads up to dry for next potty outside ...learning before this part that they will go pee on the next to door pee pad (potentially mess running up to floor edge and basecap molding and ruining floor that way too). I could use rugs too but that makes more laundry too or needing to make sure a rug is nearby...just became easier to use one of these instead of a rug. (Especially because one dog LOVED peeing on any rug and especially bathroom rugs and depending on color and wearing slippers wouldn't know that happened until enough pee that it starts to smell. Oh ..leakage was mostly from full bladder force....never small tinkles. ... show more
