Our 10-week old puppy used it on the first day when we take him home. One trick probably helped: before we took him home, we left the grass pad on the patio for about 2 weeks, with 3 layers separated, not stacked together. It rains here a lot, I wish the nature can reduce the plastic smell - it might not seem much to human nose, but dogs have very sensitive nose and they can tell it doesn't smell like grass. We also put the pee pad underneath like some other reviews recommended. The thing to note here VERY IMPORTANT: put the pee pad at the bottom layer, don't put it directly under the grass layer. The middle layer is meant to separate the grass with the pee, so the grass won't be soaked in the pee. That's very important because if the grass is soaked in the pee, it smells like hell and it's hard to wash it off. And our puppy refuse to stay in the same room with it (no matter it's indoor or at the patio), he would lift the grass up, find and tear up the pee pad under. But if we put the pee pad on the bottom layer, he's fine with it. Pros: If your puppy can pee at one place, the pro is very obvious. We started of by leaving the grass pad in his play pen. Our puppy only pees at this grass pad since the beginning, unless he couldn't find where it is. He only had a few accidents when we move the grass pad to patio. After we had it for a couple of weeks, we purchased another one so we can wash one of them and let dry, while puppy still have another clean one to use. Cons: Our puppy might think the texture is like carpet texture. Of all the a few accidents he had, almost all were on our carpet (we do have hardwood floor at some areas, and carpet at some other areas). Dogs recognize both texture and smell when they are doing their business. Our puppy is a border collie - for bowel size reference. He pees about 15-20 times a day. When we put the grass pad indoor, we need to change the pee pad underneath every two hour, and wash/scrub the grass pad every day at night. When we start leaving the grass pad in the patio, we need to change the pee pad underneath twice a day, and wash/scrub the grass pad every 2-3 days. It's not like some other reviews says, you can change/wash it every week. Another thing is now our puppy is at about 25 pounds, the grass pad starts to get slightly small for him (we ordered size medium). He sometimes would drop a couple poop outside the edge, but it's still fine for now since it's on the patio. I wish there's a bigger size. But we use this grass pad only because he hasn't finished taking his vaccines, and can't go out yet. Our living area is on the 2nd floor of the house, backyard is on the first floor. He pees so frequently that it's a lot of work to take him downstairs and go through the garage to go to the backyard every single time. I'm also worried about feet infection for the puppy, since it rains all the time here in winter, and the backyard gets muddy. When he's able to go out, we'll start to let him go outside. And when he's older and starts to pee slightly less frequently during the day, we'll make the complete transaction. ... show more

Totally worth it if you can pick it up on sale! I paid $22, and was absolutely worth the price. We were in the market a while for a "puppy pad" for our 25lb Shetland Sheepdog (unaltered male, trained to squat to pee). We recently moved to a third floor apartment, and the area outside he can go potty is a bit of a walk, so we wanted something to provide him with extra quick pee breaks during the day, and this has worked out perfectly for us. It did take him a few days to get it, as we put it on our balcony, and he knew that was an extension of the house and a "no potty zone." If you have trouble getting your dog to use it, just keep working and give them some time. Get them excited about their potty ritual, whatever it is, put on collars/harnesses/etc and take them to the pad. The best time to do this is in the morning when they need to go. Keep taking them to the pad, don't let them go outside other than to the pad. My dog had to both learn to go against the rules of not going potty on the balcony, and also learn that he could only pee in one spot. He eventually squatted in some snow on the balcony while I was working with him on this, and both times I picked him up and put him on the pad, but did not scold him for trying to pee on the balcony. Every time he stepped on or sniffed the pad, I praised him. After putting the "yellow snow" on the pad and letting it melt, he eventually got the idea, and when he pee'd on it the first time, I threw a party for him just like I was potty training a new puppy. After that first time, it's been smooth sailing! He's pretty happy to be able to run outside and relieve himself multiple times a day as opposed to having to gear up for limited walks. Much healthier for him to be able to empty his bladder more often as well! This definitely does not replace walking or a regular potty time outside, but I definitely recommend it for dogs who need to urinate frequently, or who have inconvenient potty spots and need an extra space to "go" sometimes. Even though we keep ours outside, we put one of those puppy training pads underneath the spacer to make emptying quicker and cleaner. Only need to be changed ever 2-3 days, so totally worth it. I wouldn't recommend this product to be used inside though, as since the urine isn't diluted into the ground, the smell can get a bit strong. Even when the entire unit is rinsed off in hot water, the smell of urine still lingers, but it's fine outside and not noticeable out there. We'll see how it does in the summer sun and heat. I don't let my dog defecate on it, because that's a mess I don't want to have to clean, and I think it's much harder for them to poop on it, as they can't roam and sniff, but great for peeing. Only negatives about the product overall is the the pan is a bit shallow, so is hard to empty without spilling (a spout, or even deeper pan would help - or you can use the puppy pad method like we do.) Also, the grass mat is pretty flimsy, but that's easily replaceable, and probably should be replaced every so often to cut down on smell anyway. ... show more

My dog refused to use it so I returned it, but while unpacking it and packing it back up, I realized it was very messy. The artificial grass falls out easily and leaves blades of plastic grass everywhere to vacuum up. It would also be nice if the manufacturer could make this in a size where we could put regular puppy pads underneath instead of using the felt pad, that would make it easier to throw out every day. ... show more
