The cutting mat from Alvin seems to be great. Perfect size for the area where I am using it. However, there is a strong chemical smell from the mat that is still there even several days after leaving it out on the workbench counter. Since it will be used in the garage, the odor can be tolerated ... but using this inside my home would not be very good. This is the only reason for the lack of 5 stars. Also, since I haven't truly used it yet, so I cannot attest to the durability - but it seems both thick enough and heavy enough for its purpose. Adhesion? this isn't some sort of tape, there isn't really any adhesion involved. Now, Amazon's packaging and shipping, however, are severely lacking. Granted, this is a large size (18x30") mat, but also fairly thin, and just in a soft plastic bag. Having the Amazon shipping department stuffing it into a box that was too small for the overall area dimensions forced the mat to be warped in the box. Even after several days of it lying on a flat surface, with weights on top of it, has failed to fully flatten it out. Shame on you, Amazon!!! ... show more

I have no complaints about the item. However I have had it out of the packaging and on my studio cutting table for 3 weeks now and it is still the first thing I smell when I enter the very large room (about 26 x 26 feet square). Also, the item is half an inch wider than described. Not 36" wide but 36.5". My cutting table is exactly 36" wide. Functionally this is only a minor annoyance. But it really irks me. ... show more

...a few of the reasons I should have purchased this a long time ago and why I’m so glad I finally did! I ordered the Alvin mat just before Christmas and received my money’s worth before the holiday was over. The stress and time I wasted from needing to be extra careful is no longer an issue, a significant benefit I hadn’t previously considered but one that‘s made me especially grateful. I’ve sliced and cut with multiple sharp instruments, and only made one tiny nick* when I used a ridiculous and completely unnecessary amount of pressure on a small stack of cardboard using a box cutter(!), but even then the counter underneath was not even close to being damaged. The only adjustment needed was so the mat would lay flat and be even with the sides of the slightly narrower work station. It was an easy fix for my husband to trim a little off of each side so the measurement markings can still be seen from either direction. This mat is an easy five stars. As with all others this review is my own; no affiliation with manufacturer or seller. *To help restore damaged mats Kelly Hanson of the National Quilters Circle recommends the following: - Brush the mat lightly with a non-abrasive kitchen scrubber to loosen anything that may be stuck to the surface. - Lay the mat flat in a tub and and soak in a solution of 1/4 cup white vinegar per one gallon cool water for 15-20 mins. - Add a few drops mild detergent and scrub gently to remove anything that loosened during soak. - Dry with soft cotton towel or air dry. Make sure mat is flat throughout entire process so it doesn’t warp. If tub is too small a large trash bag or even a kiddie pool could be used to soak the mat. This process will keep the mat supple and remove unnoticeable particles that prevent cuts from self-healing. ... show more

I run a vinyl decal business out of my home and have been working on creating a better work space for completing orders. I was previously cutting vinyl on a table made from scrap wood (no cutting mat or protective surface) because it was all I had at the time. I purchased this mat to rest on top of the table so that I would stop getting splinters, dust and dog hairs in my finished decals. I must first say that I have never owned a cutting mat. My mother has been sewing for most of her life and I can't remember her ever having one, either. So, I didn't really know what to shop for, only that I needed one to cover most of the surface of my work table. I purchased the Alvin Cutting Mat first for the size to price ratio (it was significantly cheaper than other brands of the same size), second for the self-healing capabilities, and third for the stellar reviews it had received. After using it for two weeks, I am happy to report that it is everything others have claimed and I am extremely pleased with it. I was initially intrigued by the two-sided feature. As far as I can tell, there is no difference in the sides other than color, so I use the green for vinyl and the black for fabric. I have cut on the mat with various blades and each time the cut disappears in seconds. It looks good as new every time I use it. I'm not sure how long this will last, as I tend to cut vinyl very often, but I am pleased thus far with the results. As for cleaning, I have used a damp cloth to wipe it down once, but for the most part it stays pretty clean with the type of work that I do on it. I am not concerned about the mat keeping its shape (mine is left flat on the table 24/7), but if I do put it away at some point, I'll be storing it flat as well; the mat isn't flimsy but seems like it could possibly warp if not hung up or stored flat. Overall, I believe this has been my best recent Amazon purchase. The mat was delivered in a large flat box to prevent bending and the packaging was sufficient.
