  • Zero Factory Quality Control - Alesis Q88 MKII - 88 Key USB MIDI Keyboard Controller
Style: Q Series Size: 88 Keys
Review - Zero Factory Quality Control - Alesis Q88 MKII - 88 Key USB MIDI Keyboard Controller with Full Size Velocity Sensitive Semi-Weighted Keys and Music Production Software Included - (update 2022-10-26) I have received a second Alesis Q88 MKII. This second Alesis Q88 MKII was shipped via UPS. This second Alesis Q88 MKII arrived with a puncture on the outside of the box. At first I didn't see anything physically wrong with the keyboard. However, after I tested the keyboard's functionality, as I turned it over to take a look at the bottom of the keyboard I found a small scuff created on the keyboard due to the box damage. Admittedly, the damage is very small. Later on, I'll try to get around to uploading photos of the small amount of damage to the keyboard and the damage to the box. In other words UPS treats packages like footballs, and doesn't seem to care much about them. - I have tested this keyboard and unlike the first Alesis Q88 MKII I received, all 88 keys function correctly on this second one. I will do further thorough testing of all the keyboard's features, well before the return window closes. - Please also take notice that the included MPC beats software has all sorts of bugs. Since I purchased this keyboard solely for note input using the Sibelius Music Notation software application, I can report that for that specific purpose this controller is just right. I have keyboards with graded weighted hammer action keybeds from Kurzweil, Arturia, and Yamaha for actual piano playing. The Alesis Q88 MKII is not at all suitable for "piano" playing. - (original review) The first thing I did with the Alesis Q88 MKII keyboard upon receiving it was to plug it in, then play all 88 keys on the keyboard, while attached to a computer for sound output, to check that all the keys worked. Some of the keys were defective. On the keyboard I received keys: A6, A#6, B6, and C7, were all defective. One would think that the factory would have a quality control person that could check all 88 keys before shipping the keyboard from the factory, but apparently not. - I bought this keyboard for the primary purpose of using it for note input while composing with the Sibelius Music Notation software application. For the specific purpose of speeding note entry in Sibelius, so long as all 88 keys work, the Alesis Q88 MKII would be great for this limited purpose. I would not recommend this sort of spring action keyboard for actual piano playing under any circumstances though. - Anyone looking for a digital musical instrument for actual piano playing should not buy this keyboard. There are plenty of options under a thousand dollars that can do the job though. A fully weighted, graded hammer action, keyboard is a basic requirement for actual piano keyboard playing. Some inexpensive options include: the fully weighted Williams Allegro III 88 (not currently available on amazon though, unfortunately). Higher up in price range would be tried and true options like the Kurzweil SP1 88, which is available on amazon, or the Yamaha MX88, also available on amazon, or similar fully weighted graded hammer action 88 key keyboards. A suitable controller (controllers don't have built in sounds) with fully weighted hammer action keys would be the Arturia KeyLab 88 MkII 88-key Weighted Keyboard Controller (available on amazon), for which computer software provides the sounds, but for which the Arturia "Analog Lab V" virtual instrument sampled piano sounds are amazingly good. - I'm returning the Alesis Q88 MKII I received but I have already an order placed for a replacement. I will test the replacement keyboard upon arrival and report in an update to this review about how that turns out. If all the keys work on the replacement work, I will be keeping it to use for composing with the Sibelius Music Notation software application. - Given the apparent near total lack of Factory Quality Control at Alesis, buyers may want to thoroughly check out their new keyboard as soon as it arrives, to be certain that everything works, especially all 88 keys. ... show more

  • Great for beginners
Style: V Series Size: 25 Keys
this is a smaller keyboard, but i’ve used it multiple times now and i enjoy the quality. the keys are weighted (doesn’t feel the greatest, but way better than none at all!) the drum pads are ok, i feel like it would be a tad bit hard to create a beat on it due to wacky sensing of the dynamic you are playing. other than that, this is a great starter keyboard for someone interested in music production. ... show more

  • You need to be a little tech savvy
Style: Q Series Size: 32 Keys
Downloaded the needed software. Discovered a latency problem with Widows. Downloaded ASIO4ALL which is a better audio driver so I could control latency via a much reduced buffer size (144 or 128) and raise the sample rate. There are other things you can do too. Also get an app called Dexed. Nice features and less complicated than the programs from Alesis. ... show more

  • Surprised
Style: Q Series Size: 32 Keys
For the price, this thing isn't that bad. I run it in to Garage Band, and it works great. It's tiny enough to sit on my desk beside my keyboard.

  • Great - light - easy!!!
Style: Q Series Size: 88 Keys
Great little full-size 88, so easy to take to gigs, and does most everything I’d want it to. Amazing for the price!! Easy delivery. Something is funky with the way the expression pedal (you can set it to different midi channels- I set it to Soft) works with Mainstage. I’m trying to use it to change patches. So my workaround is plugging the sustain into expression (second jack) and the secondary pedal into sustain. And assigning them opposite, basically. However, then if I press both pedals at the same time, notes get stuck on. Not a big deal, it still works perfectly as long as I don’t press both at the same time, and it’s a very specific and sort of uncommon thing I’m trying to do with two sustain pedals- one being used as a patch change. I use it at most of my gigs now!! ... show more
