Description

Calico is a puzzly tile-laying game of quilts and cats! In Calico, players compete to sew the coziest quilt as they collect and place patches of different colors and patterns. Each quilt has a particular pattern that must be followed, and players are also trying to create color and pattern combinations that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also able to attract the cuddliest cats! Turns are simple. Select a single patch tile from your hand and sew it into your quilt, then draw another patch into your hand from the three available. If you are able to create a color group, you may sew a button onto your quilt. If you are able to create a pattern combination that is attractive to any of the cats, it will come over and curl up on your quilt! I got this as a birthday present for my fiancée. This game is so cute, and so much fun! The variability In challenges makes it super replayable with a lot of different strategies you can approach it with. A lot of board games that offer a single player variant tend to miss the mark, but Calico is just as fun on your own or with others. The game is easy learn and fun for all ages. My favorite part is that the cats in the games are based on real cats. The rule book has bios for each of them! I didn’t know that before hand and we really loved reading it. This game is a must have for cat lovers, quilters, and board game collectors! We have definitely played it enough to have gotten our $30 out of it already! This game is sort of slow-paced, as I feel it encourages players to strategize and reflect. The game itself is very well designed, the game pieces feel very sturdy and have lovely illustrations. The kitties were our favorite part. It has the potential to be a very complex game. We've only played the basic set up, for 1 and 2 players. Calico is a great game that has varied difficulties based on the rules you play with. When my partner and I play, we can use the simpler scoring method, or the more advanced one, depending on the mood we're in. When our 7 year old wants to play with us, there's an even simpler version that only allows for a couple ways to score points that makes it fun and approachable for kids. The artwork is beautiful, the build quality is great, and it comes with bags to pack everything up. All the little details have gotten attention.     • Beautiful and fun game for all levels
I loved the premise and the artwork of this game so much I couldn’t help but buy it for myself. It’s super easy to learn. I watched a couple YouTube videos then dove into the instructions. It can be made more complex for people who want more strategy and challenge, and it can also be simplified for people who just want to have a good time making a beautiful quilt. With two players we were able to finish a game in 30 minutes which is great when we just want to play something quick on a weeknight. The only thing that would make this better is a better organizational system for all the pieces. It comes with maybe 5 baggies but a million different kinds of pieces. I spend way too long sorting out which kittens I need for a round. I won’t knock stars for that though because the price point is so low for a game of this quality. ... show more

    • Beautiful game but very frustrating box design
Yes the game is really fun - a perfect challenge for me and my 8 year who likes puzzle games and cats (not sure why Amazon lists it as age 14+). However, for a game that's all about putting things together in the most perfect way, the box is TERRIBLE at storing and organising the pieces. The game only comes with a cloth bag and a couple of transparent zip locks bags . That means that we must spend ages setting up and putting the game away, which is no fun.     • We LOVE this game!!!
I bought this game for my boyfriend for Christmas because it had a cat on the box :) little did I know it would become our absolute favorite game, and that is saying a lot, because we seriously have A LOT of games! This game checks so many boxes for us, it is the perfect amount of difficulty for our brains, there are so many various ways it can be played, plus it is so cute! It can be played in a way for kids to enjoy, but also has the potential to be extremely challenging for advanced gamers. The rule book includes multiple different game play suggestions and challenges to complete, it even has additional rules you can implement to switch up the playing style. We have been having weekly Calico game nights since January (its May as I write this) and we have no signs of getting bored of it, there are still so many ways it can be played that we haven't tried yet. I recently sent it to my brother and sister-in-law as a house warming gift because we adore it so much. If you love challenging strategy style board games (like Catan - but better!) that are different every time you play them, this is a great game for you. ... show more

This a fun game that changes every time you play it. I really like that you have options on how to play your board with different patterns or colors. Simple in concept, but still takes thinking and strategy to win!
