  • Plays sound effects
Size: 8-pad
I was looking for something to play sound effects during live gigs. Rain, chimes, thunder, intro clips that i make up. Fun and interesting add-ons and background to go along with my percussion. This does that. Simply. It loads .wav files from the sd card and easily assigns to a pad. It does not have to connect to a computer. Plays through a monitor or PA. There are enough functions for what i wanted. There are some limitations to file size. Because it is basic and simple, the interface is a bit clunky and possibly outdated, naming files takes some patience with the dial. I originally purchased an Akai pro miniplay but after struggling through the learning curve, i came to the conclusion that the miniplay was not going to do what i wanted. The miniplay is a midi controller for making beats within music software. i just wanted a standalone tool to load and play effects. Similar to a drum trigger pad, but compact and holds more sounds. The MPX8 was the right choice. Learned and set it up in about an hour the day of a gig. A good add-on. ... show more

  • Sample Player, 8-Back Drum Pad for Bandmate who "Fixes" Programmed Instruments
Size: 8-pad
You know that guy. He has the least time in the band & no progamming, sequencing, Equalizer Setting & can't tune his guitar but after we do it for him & tune it perfect he gets a Naiam Gallagher Smirk on his face & shakes his head in disgust. The rest of us go out back for a smoke/Jaegar Shot break. We offer "Nate" 1 & he replies I am far tp worried about the way the Avant Garde Bohemians will cope with our lack of vision. WE tell him Happy Face Thrillers isn't concerned about how the Avante Garde Bohemians of Orlando, FL (There are none. Just Fake Hipsters who smoke Clove Cigarettes & recite Bukowski Words & Morrissey Lyrics as their own. Almost Forgot MEAT IS MURDER is said everyday at 8am, 12pm & 6pm & 12am for 4th meal or as they say "Quatro Yum Yums. We try to be understanding but when we start playing "When it Stops" written 3 years before Nate Dog (Hates That Name) & when asked whats wrong. He says," You guys don't get it. WE aren't in High School anymore. WE need a happy Synth wave Pop sound like We had In "Rose Matter". Referring to what he called himself in you tube videos with 17 views in 5 years. It was also acoustic. "Screaming Infidelities" & tuned down Sublime & Jack Johnson songs. He aslo said I message Thommy daily & he refuses to even respond to me unless I leave this band to reignite "Rose Matter" With his Updated Jazz version of Come As You Are which is still just a bad acoustic cover but claims Krist Novaselik is excited to see what I have for him & Dave. We might restart THE BAND if they can still play up to Kurts Level like I have mastered. Thommy wants me to reprogram, all drums & add analog synths that people like Thom .... Whoa Thommy who? OMG he hates me sharing his ideas with Heathens. When I opened for him at The Social... You didn't open you played your guitar in a downtown Orlando Beggars Box but didn't even have you case to get tips. Thom & I don't play for Money. WE ARE THE MUSIC. I said Nate here you go Take This Drum Machine & Powerful Bass Synth & Sampler & move on. We tried but we knew we couldn't wipe the loppy eyed, smirk off the face of 2 men who overestimate their actual value to humanity. So, the best use for this Akai 8 back is getting rid of your scummy, "Avangard Guitarist & replace him with your own recorder tracks that were live backing tracks when It was 2 of us doing our best NIN act. And we're happy with that & even got to meet & open for NIN after using a Ghosts song in which he is listed co-writer. That's enough for me to say we weren't that bad... Nate or "Rose Matter is still saving Music with Thom. I guess the Nirvana Reunion with him as Top Choice to play Kurt never happened, but he finally got his 90th subscriber. ... show more

  • Hampered by poor UI
Size: 8-pad
Purchased to play drum loops to accompany my MicroFreak synth. It does as advertised, but the usability is really poor. To start, the URL to the companion desktop management app in users manual is 404. Found app via google, but itโ€™s barely functional. Ended up configuring without app. Does support stereo, but have to convert loop files from loopcloud before use which is a hassle. Biggest fail is file name display is limited to 7 characters, and you can not use any sort of folder structure for organization. Load times are painfully long; forget about quick switches between sample sets. Overall the product feels like a combination of nice hardware and outdated OS. Iโ€™d rather have paid another $100 for better usability. ... show more

  • It's good and customizable
Size: 8-pad
Very easy to use once you get used to it. This listing says it can play stereo samples, the manual says mono only, I tried stereo and it will not accept stereo wavs, even though it has stereo outs and you can pan the sample. If you want to use it as a baking track player, you would have to put the click track on one pad and the supplemental music track on another pad, hard pan them opposite and hit the two pads at the same time. I use it for sound effects on my solo gig now. It's good for that. But seriously, how much more could it cost to manufacturer a stereo version of this? Also there seems no way to desensitize the velocity sensitivity. ... show more

  • Fun little device that does what it says (no more, no less)
Size: 16-pad
I was incredibly fortunate to be able to try out this product at no charge. This is a fun little sample pad device. It really doesn't do more or less than I expected; namely, it can record samples and play them back on the assigned pads. The sound recording is just "ok"; I would expect most people to put sample WAV files on an SD card, pop in the card, and then play the samples. There are numerous settings (pan / reverb / etc) that can be assigned to each sample. The pads are velocity-sensitive, so you can think of them as almost being like drum pads (and in fact, you could certainly load up your own drum kit samples and use this as a drum set). This is a great accessory for performing live or for just trying to inject some imperfect organic style into your music. The only part I don't like about the product is the construction quality. It is ok, but is just a big piece of plastic. Other Akai products I own are very well constructed using metal and even wood (a synth and Tom Cat drum machine); this sample device feels a bit more like a Fisher Price product than a professional instrument. But the pads (which will take a pounding) do seem well made, and if the box lives an easy life (especially in a studio environment), I would not expect any durability issues. In summary, this is fun little device that does what it says (no more, no less). ... show more
