Bought for my son (age 16) for Christmas, and he had it up and running on his PC (Window 10) in very little time. He's really enjoyed working on it in the few days since, probably for a couple of hours per day. As the product description mentions, the software allows you access to a number of "starter" music and beats samples until you start bringing in your own. Very solidly built, all the pads, buttons and dials have a nice "equipment-grade" feel and not at all like you find on a toy (which it isn't). The software that you download once it's registered to very much full featured, yet not so dense that someone experienced with other creative software (like any of the Adobe suite for example) wouldn't be able to start using relatively quickly. That said, this is not something I'd buy if one was a complete beginner or not already fairly tech-savvy. Obviously, it'll take a little time to get used to how it all works, but in my mind that's a good thing; anything one could master in an afternoon will soon show its limitations. This looks like it could be used for some very sophisticated music and beat making; probably it'd be good for creating sound effects too. For the really motivated, this product could definitely be part of a professional setup and in that light the cost seems especially reasonable. ... show more

Dont get discouraged by the 1 star reviews. If you know very well that this is a midi controller for a software which required you to learn the software then you will be happy with this. The pads are better than on the MPC One. They are bigger and from experience more sensitive too. The best part of it, only need one usb cable and its so light and small I can just grab it and put it on my lap. You can even play it with one hand holding it. Some of the controls are even better than the more expensive models. The sample start/end and then the zoom buttons are amazing. And the touch strip is something that Akai will probably add to the expensive models in newer versions. Its too good. You can have a performance fx without having to go to the fx menu like on the hardware. Which means you can do things like track mutes and cue next sequence while having the strip fx available. The unit itself is great and very user friendly. I got this to begin the hobby along with a synthesizer. I kept having issues with playing the synth on the software and couldn't figure it out. I decided to try Ableton, which easily fixed all the problems, only to then brick the MPC Studio. I found some code that makes it work on Ableton, but lack of versatility with software is major flaw. It comes with some premade sounds, but that is pretty much it. I would rather just spend more money to have equipment that works with whatever I need than being forced to use their software. I'll be trying to return for an upgrade already, but it is still a good product nonetheless. ... show more

I wanted to love this device. The advertising makes it look so smooth and simple - getting started fast with the device and making music. What it certainly doesn't show is the long and absolutely mind-numbing process of getting the required MPC software installed on your computer and the various additional programs needed just to run the software (e.g. license manager, device and software manager). Make no mistake, this product ONLY works with Akai's MPC digital audio workstation software. In a way, it's like buying a keyboard or mouse that ONLY works with a specific word processor. And this may be great for those who are in love with that word processor, but the second you try and use that keyboard or mouse with anything other than that specific word processor, you're SOL. The product experience is not polished and the different software products needed don't play nicely all the time. Perhaps this is limited to the experience on Apple computers (which I use) so Windows users may have a better experience. Once you finally get the software installed, only then will the device actually work. The MPC software itself is a mess of a user experience and is very buggy and awkward to use. The learning curve is extremely high and compared to other Digital Audio Workstation software products like Ableton, it isn't worth it. There are only so many hours in a day and I don't have the patience or spare moments to waste fighting against the software and I will not allow myself to be locked into Akai's poor software-dependent ecosystem. They may be excellent at creating devices but their software and the quality assurance over leaves a lot to be desired. In researching Akai's products online, there are plenty of influencers out there that corroborate my experience. This doesn't mean I won't buy Akai products, I just will be careful to select products that minimize my dependence on their software delivery expertise. In summary, it's a beautiful and solidly constructed device. If you're okay with using it exclusively with Akai's MPC software and are willing to subject yourself to the compatibility of the other software components, then by all means, this device may be for you. It isn't for me - I don't trust Akai's capabilities when it comes to software design and I want a device that doesn't depend on them to be of use. ... show more
