Description

This concise and highly accessible book contains everything that parents and busy professionals need to know about ADHD.The author describes the spectrum of ADHD, the co-occurring symptoms, and common difficulties that parents face. The rest of the book focuses on solutions, based around four rules. Rule number one is keeping it positive: punishments can change behavior, but only positive approaches can improve attitude. Rule number two is keeping it calm: it's difficult thinking clearly enough to solve problems logically if you are feeling overwhelmed. Rule number three is keeping it organized: this rule relates particularly to the child's school life. Rule number four is to keep doing rules one to three. Finally, Dr. Kutscher discusses the role of medication for treating ADHD. The concluding chapter summarizes the information covered and can also be read as a complete, freestanding text. Useful checklists and further reading recommendations are also included.Realistic and optimistic, this book is the ideal source of information and advice for parents and professionals who are trying to keep up with children who are living without brakes. • This book gets it right !
My husband and I had read tens of books about kids with unusually explosive behavior and ADHD. Most books help you as a parent feel better bc they get you to realize you are not alone and there are plenty of other parents battling with difficult children. This book is different. Upon completing this book, I had an epiphany. I no longer felt badly for myself and angry that I was dealt this difficult deck, but rather my compassion shifted from myself to my daughter. Martin Kutcher really got it! His approach to helping you child (and myself) was quite different from anything else I had ever read. His solutions are realistic and truly work with your child instead of against them . We had incredible success using techniques outlined in the book. I was so impressed with Martin's insight to what we were going through, I actually looked him up and scheduled an appointment with him..first to thank him for improving our lives and secondly to understand how he was able to have such acumen to what was really going on and how to realistically help these kids move forward instead of the constant road blocks of traditional advice. Upon meeting Dr. Kutscher, I expressed my gratefulness and went on to ask how he was so on point. Well, Dr. Kutscher has an ADHDer of his own!!!! He has been battling these problems hands on as a parent for 20 something years. Hence his perspective was much more in tune to the realities of homelife with an ADHDer than any other author I had ever come across. A must read for all parents looking for a realistic approach! ... show more

  • Clarity at last
I have been raising my now eleven year old granddaughter for several years. Her behavior has been a significant problem, though I have never lost sight of the wonderful person she is. Counseling, medication, hospitalizations, a stint in residential care - so many opinions and diagnoses. For a time, it was looking as if it would be impossible for me to continue caring for her. I requested assessment for ADHD, kind of as a last hope, and though I had to struggle for a long time for the Connors scale to be completed and "scored", the new diagnosis has opened so many doors. Medication treatment has brought about many positive changes. This book has outlined an understanding of her "mental set" that has completely altered my understanding of the many characteristics she has exhibited, offered me many suggestions for handling her that have produced positive results, and given me a sense of direction for her care that, while challenging and of concern, has freed me of despair. It has also helped me to understand what I have reason to expect from the educational system. There is no magic. Her behavior, depression, family conflicts and personality will continue to present challenges and will require effort for a long time. This book helped me to see a path, a set of understandings and a reason to hope that one day she might come to understand the differences in her view of life and be able to manage. There is so much wonderful about her to fight to save. ... show more

  • Enlightening!
Wow! This book really opened my eyes about what ADHD is,and why children with ADHD do the things they do. Really helpful, and enables you to better deal with your child. You realize your child isn't the "Brat" everyone and maybe even yourself thought they were. It puts things in the perspective that we need to be compassionate and caring to our child. Once you learn what this book teaches you, not only do you understand why your child acts the way he does, but you have the tools to help your child and make some positive changes in yourself and your child. I am raising my grand children and the oldest, 11 years old is severely disabled. Her brother, 10 years old has ADHD and Aspergers. I was scared for my grandson and thinking there was something terribly wrong with him. After reading this book I've made some changes in myself and how I deal with every day life with him. We were "on each others nerves" Big Time before I read this book. I have also realized through reading this book and seeing a psychiatrist, that I myself have ADD. Our relationship has improved immensely; we actually spend time together enjoying each others company. I am much less stressed out, and his behavior has improved, and I'm sure will continue to improve as we continue to use the skills we've been taught through this book. I'm very happy my son's psychologist recommended this book. ... show more

  • Everyday ADHD
I bought this book for me a Grandmother and for my daughter who has 2 sons who are extremely active and have a hard time focusing. This author shows how children with ADHD may act during the day and list some symptoms. But he also brings in the behavior that is normal or needs a parents help to end if the behavior if bad and reward if good. This book will help any mother or father to open themselves to the possibility there child may have some form of ADHD. This book will also help the parent to have less stress and more confidence which will enable a more calm, loving, environment without the anger, impatience, or feeling of throwing in the towel. This is easy reading and very easily understood information. Fathers may need a lot of help to understand their child and this book clearly gives the reader information without the clinical jargon and supports the parent with good examples of interactions for everyday living. Purchase this book and be a fun loving parent that has a more relaxed, confident and smiling child. ... show more
