  • Could be better.
Style: Display Version 2 Pattern Name: Station
I am surprised how they go ahead mass producing and marketing a product with obvious and simply remedied design flaws that should have been corrected on paper before manufacturing and releasing product to the public. 1.)If wall mounted, the wires exiting the back interfere with it laying flat against the wall. This is just plain stupid. 2.) Why have both a power supply and USB? USB cables are capable of providing power and transmitting data at the same time. 3.) Why not have the display dimable like other models? It is overly bright. 4.) Despite being annoyingly bright, the display is difficult to read if not looked at from a specific angle. That angle is from above level, making wall mounting even further problematic. 5.)Somehow they managed to make the display very cluttered, yet rain rate and interior conditions can only be read by pushing a cycling button, meanwhile, rarely needed information such as all time accumulated rainfall of the installed unit is permanently displayed. 6.) Wind Gusts are not reported. (WTF!) 7.) The "weather ticker"'s usefulness is debatable as even on fast speed, it is annoyingly slow. 8.) The "weather ticker" is very dim compared to other screen data, and the view angle is even more specific than the other data on the display. 9.) The sensor unit has a solar panel, but that powers a fan (noisy so you know it works! ) that pushes ambient temp air by the temp sensor exclusively. The transmission batteries are of the non rechargeable type and presumably will wear down one day soon requiring me to dismantle my 25' stayed mast to replace. 10.) The wind direction vane is located underneath the main body of the sensor unit and on the North side. This makes the vane waver in the eddy of my prevailing Southerly wind. EDIT: The good- after 14 months, I have not needed to change the batteries in the sensor unit which is a good thing because it is on a 26' mast with 3 stays and will be a major project. The bad- the USB connection between the display unit and my windows 10 computer is infuriatingly unreliable. It inexplicitly drops for days at a time and I have to unplug, turn off and restart software etc before it inexplicitly connects again. I am using the acu-rite software linked to weather underground, and also a program called " weather display" and "VIS Reader". Large blocks of data are lost to all three programs so accumulations and all time records are inaccurate. My previous Ambient weather station running "Cumulus" software gave me nearly 12 years of uninterrupted data till the station literally fell apart from sun exposure. Cumulus software does not support acu-rite weather stations unfortunately. ... show more

  • It a little misleading on the ability to access the information from anywhere
Style: Display Version 2 Pattern Name: Station
You can't view the current status of your weather station from your phone without hooking the display up to your home computer and leaving your computer on all day everyday in order to transmit the information to your phone. Unfortunately that is a major downfall for me. Otherwise the unit works as well as any other non wifi transmitting weather station. ... show more

  • Quality Product Design, but Damaged unit, even though listed as Used, Good Condition
Style: Display Version 2 Pattern Name: Station
This weather station is well designed for its purpose, and appears to be well built also. I've only had it up and running for a week. The color display that reports the wea data is attractive and colorful. The color coding on the display makes it easy to spot the info section desired and plenty of weather data is displayed for general weather conditions. Even though the color on the display is provided by an overlay on the display screen, with black LCD readouts, it is generally easy to read, with some exceptions. The LCD readouts are darkest when viewed from slightly above the display unit, and the angle of view greatly affects the ease of seeing the readouts. Contrast is not adjustable. The “Weather Ticker” at the bottom of the display provides useful information, but unfortunately is a bit slow, even at it's fastest scrolling speed. And, it's particularly difficult to read, even when all other display fields are quite visible. This Acurite unit replaces a Davis 6250 weather station that completely quit transmitting data shortly after the 1 year warranty expired. I spoke with a technical rep with Davis and discovered that the unit will have to be returned to the factory to make it functional again – at a cost of $100, plus shipping to the factory. To have electronic components in a weatherized box that doesn't get jostled simply fail after several months is bad enough, but for a $350 unit which becomes a $470 investment after repairs, it's simply not acceptable. Even the Davis tech rep agreed. I'll steer clear of the Davis brand and hopefully have much better service – at less than half the cost – from Acurite. Also, Acurite has a well designed and generally easy to navigate website, with lots of useful information. — One other note, regarding this used device. I bought the Acurite unit through Amazon, as a used but listed in good condition product. The original product box had been taped back together. No shipping damage was apparent but the outdoor sensor unit had been damaged – though not in shipping. One of the 3 wind anemometer cups was broken off from the main shaft. It was obviously not shipment damage because the broken off cup was taped to the bottom of the sensor unit. Also, the wind direction vane was slightly off kilter from its attachment shaft. I was able to repair the broken anemometer cup with gorilla glue and heat shrink tubing, and straighten the direction vane. Both have been operating for a week, with gusts in the mid 20 mph range, so things are functioning. Acurite has a superior website, far superior to the Davis website at least, and they list individual replacement components at reasonable prices. ... show more
