  • Acer Does it Again
A nice economic level gaming computer. Packed full of some great features and specs it will be better than your average laptop for gaming, but still has some limitations. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy the laptop, was excited to be able to get it, and am happy with it for my needs. I don’t do a whole lot of gaming, but can appreciate great graphics and increased speed/processing capabilities. I also enjoy and feel I need a larger screen in a laptop. Even if it’s not for gaming purposes, and just for getting some work down, editing photos, working with PowerPoint, etc., a larger screen like this works well for me and this one is bright and displays well. There are plenty of ports as well. A total of 3 standard USB ports, including at least one on each side, a type C USB port, and Ethernet port, and An HDMI port. My small gripes are probably fairly common ones. The battery life isn’t the best if you are actually gonna heavily game and while there are good options for ports, I really don’t understand why major brands like Acer haven’t gotten on board with making their power supply a type C plug. If they did this, they could offer two type C ports and add more flexibility to the laptop. Other than that, I’m very happy overall with the laptop. While it’s been a while, I’ve had Acer computers before and have always found them to be a good value and pack in great features for their price points, and this one is in line with that. ... show more

  • Compared to alternatives, it is just *fine*
This laptop has the specs to impress and at full bore, it plays games really well (even with ray tracing), but where it suffers is just from the basic fit and finish. The keyboard is mushy, has very low key travel, and for some reason, mine is uneven and slightly sunken-in in the middle (there is a visible warp). Additionally, this laptop is LOUD. Like, I didn't even know they got this loud. The issue lies in that the vent on the rear of the laptop exhausts up in front of the display instead of out and behind it. This is not ideal for fan noise as it is reflected off the screen and appears louder than it actually is. There are laptops (HP Victus 15) that have literally the same exact specs at the same price and do not have these problems. Additionally, I had a lot of trouble getting this laptop up and running. The very first thing I did was install 32gb of RAM and an additional 2TB ssd (I commend the manufacturer for including these upgrade slots). I finally got everything set up and downloaded a few games to test when I had to restart because of a windows update (normal) and then I got stuck in an automatic repair boot loop (not normal) that made my unit unusable and my only option was to do a clean install of windows from a usb to get it working again. This was a huge technical undertaking for a brand new laptop and I doubt many people who just want an out-of-the-box gaming experience will want to do this or even know how. Frustrating. (side note, if this happens to you, make sure you download the nvidia drivers as well as the amd adrenaline software because the cpu is in charge of graphics when non gaming and you'll need an amd graphics driver in addition to the discrete GPU driver to run the screen at 144Hz). Okay, with all that context out of the way, here are the things I did like about this laptop: The Nitrosense software is pretty good for fan control and has options that make a noticeable impact on your experience (good and bad). When you have the laptop in performance mode, you can play Cyberpunk 2077 ,with raytracing on, at around 110 fps on the high end and 90 on the low - which is really good. The fans are deafening in this mode so you'll need headphones or to really crank the speakers. Speaking of the speakers, I like them. For the price point, they get very loud and have a sufficient amount of detail without getting muddy. Going back to the performance modes, I usually keep my unit on eco (on battery) or quiet (on AC power) because otherwise the fans kind of ruin the experience for me. In quiet mode, I am still getting around 70-80fps in Cyberpunk 2077 with the same settings, so totally playable and not deafening. I wouldn't try to game on battery if you can help it as the speed at which it will drain is not good for the lifetime of the battery. I like that I can open the lid with one hand. Comparing to the HP Victus 15, which I have to pry open with two. The battery also compares favorably to the HP Victus 15. I have not done any in depth stress tests, but the "projected time" I can remain on battery is significantly higher (several hours more) than on the Victus. In addition to all of this, I really enjoy the port options on this laptop. You can easily use a second monitor with the usb-c port and still have 3 more usb-a ports to use for peripherals. All in all, if you can get this on sale, I would say it is worth it, but I would much rather have an HP Victus 15 with the same specs than this laptop. The Victus just feels better in the hand and will perform just as well while being quieter. Edit: I have added one star to my review after a few more weeks of using this as my only laptop. I may have been too hard on this product initially, for a few reasons. The battery lasts significantly longer than the HP Victus and does so with more powerful components. This has enabled me to leave the house without the charger because I am not so worried about this laptop dying on me halfway through doing something. Additionally, the speakers are quite good for the price point. I took out my Victus and listened to it with the Nitro side by side and the Nitro has substantially better sound. If you can afford the RAM upgrade, this laptop is a good deal. ... show more

  • Well appointed laptop
This is a very nice laptop for the price. I'm still working at getting my desired software installed, but so far there have been no issues. The screen is excellent. The speakers are surprisingly good. I'm not a huge fan of laptop keyboards in general, but the one on this feels pretty good. It doesn't have RGB. White backlight only. I appreciate that it includes a number pad. The touchpad is ok though not great. I usually use a mouse though. There are a good selection of ports including a Thunderbolt type C if you needed more for some reason. It has integrated graphics on the CPU as well as the separate 4050 which allows for longer battery times. I've had no issues with the latter. The fans are relatively quiet when doing basic productivity work. They do kick up when gaming and the 4050 takes over. Overall it feels well built. It's not as rock solid as one with metal case, but then it's nowhere near as expensive. There was minimal bloatware. The one slight downside is it only comes with 8 gigs of ram. Easy and cheap enough to add another stick, but it would have been worth an extra $20 to have it with 16gigs to begin with. I'll likely upgrade that and may add a second m.2 SSD since there is space for one though the 512GB drive it comes with is likely going to be fine for my use. If you were going to use this as a desktop replacement you'd definitely want to do both. About the looks I'll just say it's understated and would look perfectly professional in an office. Make no mistake though, it's a pretty competent gaming computer. ... show more
