  • A good choice if you have the room
A good choice for those that tend to obsess over their weight. Probably overkill for someone who just wants to know what they weigh occasionally, but if you are seriously trying to lose weight, a good tool like this one could help. Most consumer-grade digital scales cheat to conceal their lack of accuracy. The makers know that you're likely to step on and off and back on the scale to see if you get the same reading, and they also know that there's no way a cheap scale is going to be consistent to a tenth of a pound (or even a half pound). You'll get a slightly different reading if you step on the scale in a slightly different way. So the machines are set to "remember" recent readings, and come back with the same number if they think they're seeing the same person again. For some scales, that means that you tend to get the same reading for a few days in a row until the difference is enough to overcome this stickiness. So, if you follow the current recommendation to weight yourself every day, most days you're not getting any new information from the reading. This is silly, because your weight may vary by 3-5 pounds in a single day, but you won't get a good idea of how your weight varies. And the less you understand about how your weight is changing, the less you'll be able to relate those changes to your diet and exercise. The Accuro scale has a large enough platform that if gives pretty consistent readings if you step anywhere near the center. So it doesn't need to cheat. I think it's too much to expect that it's really correctly calibrated to the tenth of a pound, but it is good enough that even though tenths mean something in a relative sense. The chief down side of a scale like this over a cheap floor hugger, apart from the price, is that it occupies a good deal of floor space. You really need a corner of the bathroom that's about 18" by 30", and close to a power outlet--this is not the sort of item you want to be dragging out of a closet whenever you want to weight yourself, or to be turning over to replace the batteries. Other scales have more bells and whistles--body fat measurement, for example, or wireless communication with your phone. The one extra feature on this scale is a way for it to calculate your BMI (after you've told it how tall you are). I think these are distractions--if you get too interested, for example, in a wildly inaccurate estimate of your body fat, you'll tend to lose track of the real reason you have a good scale--to bring your weight under control. The Accuro excels at this one task, and wisely doesn't fuss much with the other silliness. ... show more

Scale works well. However keep in mind that the included triple AAA batteries do not mantain the scales clock settings in a power outage etc. Definitely a design flaw. Otherwise the scale works very well.
