Description

Raising a Serial KillerFather's Search for AnswersIn July of 1991 the country was shocked by the unfathomable crimes of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. But no one was more shocked than his parents. In A Father's Story, the reader is witness to the incremental unraveling of a parent's image of their child, and the "thousand different reactions" that follow. In his attempt to understand the nature of his son's psychosis, Lionel Dahmer methodically scrutinizes every possible contributing factor to his son's madness. His desperation is palpable as he searches for clues in the emotional, psychological, and genetic landscape of his son's life.Riveting and soul-wrenching, this unprecedented memoir is the confession of a father who must "confront the saddest truth a human can know-that his child has somehow crossed the line that separates the human from the monstrous." • Insightful
If you’re interested in the perplexities of how the horrors of Jeffrey Dahmer came to be, this really doesn’t give you clear answers. What it does give is a harrowing glimpse into a parent’s honest analysis of how he raised his son, the son who would become one of the most notorious and grizzly serial killers our world has ever known. In A Fathers Story, Mr Dahmer courageously attempts to understand what went wrong with his son Jeffrey. Thankfully there are very few ‘gory details’. It really isn’t about the murders per se but about his relationship with his son and the downward spiral he witnessed in him. I found this to be worthwhile read and even helpful as a parent. While in some ways it is a cautionary tale to pay close attention to your kids and the red flags you see, Mr. Dahmer could never have known his son would become what he did. It was extremely sad but also inspiring to see a parent while not accepting or in any way excusing his sons abhorrent actions also continue to love him and seek help for him to the end. ... show more

  • Insightful
This book was written so Lionel Dahmer could tell his son's story from his perspective and to serve as a warning to other parents re: be aware of red flags. He searches his own childhood for similarities in himself and Jeff. He describes trying to engage Jeff in various interests as he sees Jeff become more and more withdrawn apathetic, and begins his descent into violent fantasies tied in with his sexuality. He Lionel is devastated by Jeff's actions and while he abhors what he has done he continues to love and support him. What I found lacking: the book barely mentions Joyce, Jeff's mother who abandoned Jeff abruptly just after he turned 18 and who was mentally unstable. What does Lionel think about how that affected Jeff? ... show more

  • Must read
This is a heartbreaking assessment by a father trying to understand the actions of his son. It's a sad story, and touching, it doesn't go into the crimes, it's about the people involved and how Jeff's actions affected everyone. Highly Recommended

  • Excellent read. I recommend it 100%.
I loved the raw honesty of Lionel. How shared his true thoughts about his life raising his son. You can't blame yourself for your son's mental illness.

  • Seemed more about Lionel than Jeffrey
If Lionel wrote this to come clean about what happened to Jeffrey it doesn't come off that way. If anything it seems to be about Lionel wanting to talk about himself and to not take any responsibility for the environment Jeffrey grew up in. Lots of blaming his ex-wife who had mental issues. That he left to raise Jeff and David alone for days on end. He also leaves stuff out that other people confirmed did happen. Like the roadkill. Although it is interesting to see the kind of parents and environment went into creating Dahmer. ... show more

  • Astounding Book and a MUST-HAVE Read
I never give anything a review because they seem pointless to me, however, I can’t remain silent In regards to this book. Serial Killers, especially Ted Bundy and Jeff have always sent me into deep thought of what the meaning of life really is, or if there is even a meaning to it. I usually stick to “primary” sources for these two, or first-hand accounts because I find them more fascinating and riveting. This book, I can not stress enough, is hands down the most riveting, thought-provoking, and emotional first-hand account. My respect for Lionel Dahmer is immeasurable for the pain he has dealt with regarding his son is immense. His writing style is immaculate and you can tell that he poured all his effort into this book, which as the father of the infamous Jeffrey Dahmer, could be deemed emotionally exhausting. Dahmer let’s the reader relive his experience in a vulnerable way that I have never seen before. He talks about his internal conflicts and thoughts that he had at the time and when he wrote the book, and of course, his experience with his son Jeff. If you are a true crime geek, or want to hear the story of Jeff in the perspective of his own flesh and blood, this is for you. As Lionel mentions, it just makes you wonder where and when things went cause murder. ... show more

  • Great book.
I have been very intrigued with the Jeffrey Dahmer case after watching the new series on Netflix. However, I realized after doing so much research that so many things were not true in the series. I mean it’s to be expected since it is not a documentary, but for entertainment. I decided to get this book to see what Lionel had to say. It was an awesome read. I read it within a couple weeks but I guarantee I would’ve gotten done with it in two days if I didn’t have two little ones to care for and work. Definitely learned some new things I wasn’t aware of and made me feel for him because as a mother myself, I am sure I would still stand by my children if they grew up to do bad things. You can’t help but think of them in their innocent days I’m sure in that situation and I’m sure I’d also blame myself, as did he. But I hope Lionel knows that his parenting and what he did had nothing to do with Jeff’s unfortunate actions. That was all on him. Anyway, I definitely think this book was worth the read and anyone else that is interested in learning more about Jeffrey Dahmer & his dads outlook I would 100% recommend this book. Don’t go by the show. I saw Lionel is NOT happy with it being put out, as he was not notified about it and lots of untrue events were added in it. He said everything he needs to say is right here in this book! ... show more

  • Honestly supper good
I wanted to get this book for more information about Jeffrey and his life, mostly because I knew that the show wasn’t very accurate. The book is about Lionel ( Jeffry’s dad) telling his sons story his way, he wanted to show that he (Jeff) wasn’t always a “monster”. The book is a shortish but intriguing book. I really got a feel of what Lionel and family had to go through, finding out that your son did terrible things right under your nose could never be fun. I totally recommend this book to any true crime lovers and people who just wanted to know more about Jeffrey and his life leading up to his crimes! ... show more
