  • Slightly different design…
I always keep extra hive parts and accessories on hand; I can help out other beekeepers and have backup for my new yard. So ordered these to have on hand as I get into the season for establishing new hives and the girls need to be able to guard their entrance. Of course they also come in handy during fall robbing periods and winter for closing up hive for warmth. I find these entrance reducer pine fairly consistent with others I have used, and at a decent value. The Good: standard pine with one or two bee reducer and the longer reducer for when traffic picks up. Overall length is proper for a 10 frame hive. The price is super- when I ordered these reducers, they cost $2.80 each, which is lower enough than I can buy the raw materials and make my own - to get my attention and say this is a value buy. The Bad: my preference (although this probably is debatable by other keepers as actually being needed) is to bee wax coat non painted hive part. For me, it keeps things from sliding around, easier for the girls to propolis up wherever they seem is required. And, just smells better. Easy enough to dip in warmed wax when recoating frame starters and south). The pine is significantly softer than my other hive parts and reducers. I usually include the “ugly”, but not much ugly about entrance reducers. I do have a “weird” though, so here we buzz… The Weird: the small and larger reducer are offset than any pattern I have encountered. Perhaps I have just had a sheltered in a hive part anomaly where I live, but the entrance cuts are weird. Typically, the short and long are on opposite ends, so the spacing from right or left (my girls prefer left side entry and exit) is the same for the smaller and medium .25 reducer. I took a photo of these new ones with one I bought and one I made to demonstrate the difference (note the package only had five reducers, the photo with the additional two are ones I have on hand already). Now, this may not make a difference to the girls, and I will find out through this spring and summer. It mover their coming and going pattern from right or left of the landing board to the middle. This probably bothers me more than the bees, since when I remove the reducers in spring the bees seem to care a less home and where they come into the hive (especially when they are fully loaded with pollen and / or nectar and are crash landing anyhow). I also noticed that the small reducer cut is smaller than what I would consider “normal,” but this may be better I believe. Overall, a good value. I dropped a star for preferences - I prefer more dense/hard pine, I prefer wax coating, and the cuts more “standard.” I do like the smaller cut of the smallest reducer size, which I think will be better for new hives, robbing situations, and bitter winter cold. ... show more

  • A Essential Tool For Beekeeping
You are going to need an Entrance Reducer. Whether it is to stop robbing or to keep mice out of your hive. This five pack of Hive Entrance Reducers will do those jobs. The Reducers are well made. The saw cuts are accurate and the wood surfaces are smooth. It fits nicely in a ten frame hive, but it can also easily be cut shorter to fit a eight frame hive. You have two choises as to how to orient the openings. Most beekeepers have the opening facing down (the bees can walk right into the hive). Some beekeepers place the reducer with the opening facing up (the bees have to step up to enter the hive). The theory for this placement is to prevent the opening from getting clogged with dead bees. • Fits hive
I got this for a screened bottom board. I have a flow hive (fake) and the bottom board is shaped differently so I couldn't use the entrance reducers from that bottom board on the screened one I bought. These fit perfectly and have different options for size openings. I do like that my other entrance reducer has two rotating pieces that can open or close to any size. This has only fixed sizes. ... show more

  • Pretty standard stuff.
These are solidly made out of what appears to be a soft wood like pine. They are a bit oversized for my standard Langstroth hive boxes which is good as these are easily trimmed down (and I’d rather have them oversized than undersized). One qualm that I do have is that the entrance height is half an inch and I believe 3/8” is standard. This is something to keep in mind if you use your entrance reducers as a mouse guard. Some studies have shown that juvenile rodents can fit into openings as small as half an inch. At $14 for five units, these are reasonably priced. You’d be hard-pressed to find cheaper entrance reducers with free shipping. Overall, they should serve their purpose just fine. Pretty happy. 4/5 stars. ... show more

  • Perfectly sized, no gaps
These fit my 10-frame hives perfectly - well, except for the one I have where my measurements were off, but I shaved a little off with my grinding wheel to make it fit snug. If you have an 8-frame, just saw them off to fit. In case you haven't used these before, you place them in the entrance of your hive to restrict the size of the entrance. Insert it one way, and you have about a 3.5" entrance, or twist it 90-degrees to get a smaller .75" entrance. I've read that you should install them with the notch facing upward to keep the entrance from being blocked by debris, but honestly the bees usually keep this area clear. So why would you need to reduce the entrance? This makes it easier for bees to protect their hive from robbers from another colony, and can also help keep mice out (but you probably want to check out mouse guards). Some people say to run them all year, while others only run them in the cooler months or only on weaker colonies. I tend to keep mine in all year, usually on the wider opening. In winter, I might switch to the smaller opening. Keep one or two of these in your kit when you go out to inspect your hives. ... show more
