  • Worth it!
Color: Black, Blue, Red, Purple
These provide excellent value for the price. They're smooth, easy to fill, and don't leak. They also look really nice and come in a protective case, which I didn't expect. It's not a fancy case at all, but hey- it's free! These do sometimes take a little writing to get started, but storing them point down (cap on, of course) helps to avoid that. Another downside is sometimes the caps take a little finagling to get them to post. To me, these two little quirks are not a problem at all, seeing as I paid so little for these. My Pilot Metropolitan and my Lamy Safari do work better than these pens, so if you're wanting an upgrade, either of those would be a good next step. But for a sturdy, inexpensive everyday writer, these are sure hard to beat! Update: 5 months in, the pens work as well as they did before, except that the lid tends to come off one of the pens when it's closed. They still look really nice, the finish has held up well. The case has held up well, too. The pens are the same, but my opinion has changed: if I were to go back in time (having experienced these pens) I would buy another Pilot Metropolitan or Lamy Safari instead of these. I find myself reaching for one of my "starts every time" pens more often than one of these, which may require a little prior scribbling. I wouldn't say I regret buying them, just that I wouldn't buy them again. ... show more

  • It has some hard starting (NOT OFTEN)
THIS IS A GREAT PEN to start with if you like heavier pens. This is more in the medium to heavy weight range, which feels very nice for people who prefer that. I think it is not too thick for people with smaller hands, and if you don't like the weight, don't post it. now for the cons, this pen has one major con: every time you stop writing for maybe 20 min, it will not write until you keep trying, and then the ink will start flowing. This is not a severe reason not to buy this pen, as it will start writing after about 5 seconds, but it is something to keep in mind. Overall, this is a fantastic pen for beginners, and this problem might not be with all of them, but if they fix that problem, it would be a 5-star. ... show more

  • Simple and Elegant at a great price.
In recent years I have begun collecting fountain pens, starting with one (a Waterman) given as a gift to me by my grandmother. There is something about writing with a fountain pen that is just soothing to me. Anyhow, I ordered another Jinhao fountain pen a couple of years ago and it has been one of my favorites. It has a solid weight, feels durable, and also gets lots of compliments when people see it. They instantly assume it is very old, because very few people seem to use fountain pens anymore. I have run across multi-packs of these pens several times, but never a color combination or barrel style that I particularly care for, so when I ran across these, I just had to have them, and I was not disappointed. They are, like my first Jinhao, nicely weighted, sturdy, durable, and they look pretty damned good too. My 4 pack of choice came with the brushed silver, the black and silver check, the satin black, and what was described as lava red. I often have a hard time deciding which one I want to use. If you like fountain pens, and want to actually use them, but don't want to spend a fortune on the pen(s) or supplies, this is a great set, to start or add to your fountain pen collection. ... show more

  • This is ridiculously good for the price...
I was duly impressed with the feel and smoothness of the Duke Ruby I ordered a few months ago. When I saw this, I decided to take a gamble - I mean, $7.99: why not? Much to my surprise this pen compares favorably to the Duke Ruby, at 1/3 the price! - I realize that $30 is already very cheap for a fountain pen, but this set me back $8, feels pretty good, has heft and rests well in the hand, and the nib is reasonably smooth. As with the Ruby I would say it's 3x as good as the low-water mark for inexpensive pens, the disappointing Parker IM. Don't get me wrong - It's not like my Pilot Vanishing Point or Fermo, and it really won't replace your Mont Blanc, but it glides decently well: it feels good to use, and at about 40g cap-included you're getting a bargain: where else can you find a pen that's nice to write with, at 20¢/gram? ... show more

  • Really substantial wet writers but inconsistent sizing!
Color: Red, White, Magic Fog
I LOVE Jinhao pens! For their price, you're getting really decent writers! They have a great weight (a bit heavy when the cap is posted though, but big enough to write with unposted!) and their grips are SUPER comfy! But if you're looking for consistency, you'll probably need a nib swap as presented by my photo. I love wet broad nibs but as I'm gifting these off to family for Christmas, I'll either need to swap out nibs or adjust them to be less wet! Still worth the purchase IMHO as beautiful pen skeletons for better nibs, really classy looking and decently-sized pens at a great value! ... show more

  • I don't know
I have too many fountain pens, so I haven't even tried these yet. The finish on all of them are excellent.

  • Good knockabout pen, super fat nib
I bought this to be my "iron gall workhorse" - something nice enough looking to carry around, but cheap enough to lose or let the nib get corroded by iron gall ink. It doesn't post very securely and posting throws off the balance, but it's about long enough to write with unposted. For my planned use case, I really need a Fine or Extra Fine nib, but it seems that Jinhao doesn't make them in their larger nib size, and Jinhao nibs are shaped slightly differently than other #6 nibs. I tried swapping it with a Noodler's #6 nib I have around, and a Conklin nib, and even though the Jinhao feed looks identical to the Conklin feed (hmmmm...), the nib itself would not fit in the housing. It's great if you have big, bubbly handwriting and like a big fat nib, but it won't quite work for e.g. filling out paperwork. ... show more
