    • It can be installed DIY if you have some patience and a vacuum pump
I was using this for my garage/shop area that I want to be cool in summer and warm in winter here in Utah. I looked up multiple different units and kits and this seemed like the best bang for the buck. The Installation of the indoor unit requires two people especially if you have high ceilings. The outdoor unit looks nice and was easy to install on a universal wall mount I purchased from amazon. I connected up the AC lines, (it says to torque them but I just tightened them as much as I could by hand with 2 wrenches) and pulled a vacuum with a vacuum pump, just like it says in the instruction manual (I purchased a vacuum pump and a/c manifold gauge combo for $150 from amazon) After that I opened up the valves and allowed the freon to flow and it cools and heats the space very well. The outside unit is not very loud at all you would have no idea its running even if this were next to a window. I received 3 quotes from a/c guys in the 5k range for them to install their unit or $3K for them to install a unit I purchased online. The amount of effort to install this is not close to worth $3k and does not require much specialized skill other than drilling holes and tightening hoses, I should mention, my outdoor unit was right next to my main panel that had an extra 220 breaker in it so the wiring in my situation was trivial. I suppose getting the electrical run may be an issue for someone else doing this DIY, but I would call an electrician to price running the wire and connecting it up. It can't be more than $200-300 depending on how far your panel is from the outside unit. Additional note After the cold utah winter this unit has really.done well i was really worrried about the outside condensor freezing but it has regularly been down to the 20s and below and this unit keeps my 700 sqft garage 60 degrees no problem and power consumption hasn't even been noticable. ... show more

There are not many manufactures that make high SEER/HSPF 18K BTU heat pumps unfortunately, but this unit fits the bill perfectly for my desires. Most 18K units are around 17-19 SEER/8-10 HSPF, with this one hitting 23.3 SEER/11.6 HSPF. Efficiency was a factor in my purchase as I could have purchased other 18K BTU units for $400 less. I do wish it had built-in WiFi control, but there are other options available for this need and the Cielo Breez is the recommended option through Air-Con, which I have on order. Installation was very straight forward and similar to other heat pump installs. I used vinyl channeling from Pioneer and a wall bracket from Senville. Both fit perfectly with this unit. The unit comes with nice thick vibration dampers for the feet, and I recommend using them. You don't really hear the outdoor unit operate unless it is under a full heat load, so it is still very pleasant. The electricity savings have been astronomical in using this combined with newer high-efficient window units, so at the very least, the efficiency ratings seem to hold up in real-world usage. I previously used two portable AC's and three traditional window units, so the room for improvement was very large in my case. (Portable single-pipe AC's are the most inefficient air conditioner you can run. They create a negative-pressure in your home that causes outdoor air infiltration, which kills the effectiveness of the unit. A 12K BTU unit can be de-rated as low as 6K BTU of 'actual cooling effectiveness' [referred to as BTU DOE] because of this which makes cooling costs much higher and can make the unit not satisfy the space. Just a quick rant for anyone considering a heat pump, the difference is incredible in both efficiency and effectiveness compared to a portable.) All-in-all, I would definitely buy one of these Air-Con units again and I will consider it for other rooms in my home as well! A very happy customer! ... show more

    • Indoor unit squeaks after some time.
I have had this for a few years now and the first two years were fine. But the blower in the indoor unit has developed a squeak. It is getting louder and louder, but there is no practical way to service it because all of these have a terrible design where they are assembled from the back. If the cover could be removed I could probably lubricate or replace the bearing. Adding to the bad design, when I installed it, the lines attach to the back of the unit. You have to attach them and then hang it on the wall. Then connect the condenser side with the compressor and one the valves to fill the system (simplified). Once you fill the system you need to check for leaks. But the connections are behind the unit... So the only way to check is to somehow support it and pull it slightly away from the wall and check for leaks in the cramped space. This is a problem for every mini split I have seen, not just this unit, and is a terrible design. The cover should be removable. The lines should come through the back on either side to the front where they are bent over and attached just under the front cover. The lines can then be installed, serviced, checked for leaks, removed, without removing the unit from the wall. The hardware inside could then be installed and serviced from the front. I cannot recommend this unit as it gets unbearably noisy over time. It functions fine, so the noise problem is unfortunate. But it is rather difficult to fix and probably requires purging the refrigerant. That becomes expensive fast. ... show more
