  • Handy for shop tool set-ups.
These are nice tools. The finish is bright and seems durable so far. Good kit allows flexibility in various types of set-up tasks in my wood/work shop.

  • Solid kit that will cover almost all your bases.
I recently got a table saw (finally) along with a router table. With those, came a need to be able to judge the set up height without swearing at a tape measure or a sliding t. Thus: This kit made its way to my house. The carpenter's square is... it's a carpenter's square, what do you want me to say about it? The pencil is also something you can get anywhere, the sharpener will last about two uses before you go back to carving the pencil into a point with a utility knife. The star of the show is the height gauge blocks and we all know it. So... they come in a solid little plastic case. Won't survive getting thrown around, but definitely good enough for a garage woodworker to keep things organized. I'm not going to bother going over anything that you can get out of the description or pictures. The blocks have a slightly textured surface from the... anodizing? ...powder coating? ...whichever it is, it lets you hold onto them, while still leaving them smooth enough to glide over surfaces without scratching the hell out of them. The organization of the case drove me a little batty, as the blocks weren't organized largest to smallest like you'd think, but a bit more random. Luckily, the hard foam inside is soft enough to let you reorganize to a certain degree and get them into a more sane order. But, all of that doesn't mean jack if they aren't accurate, so I grabbed the blocks and a (admittedly cheap) set of calipers and here's the results: 1/16" (.0625") = .060" 3/32" (.09375") = .092" 1/8" (.125") = .123" 5/32 (.15625") = .155" 3/16" (.1875") = .185" 7/32 (.21875") = .217" 1/4" (.250") = .250" 5/16" (.3125") = .312" 3/8" (.375") = .372" 7/16" (.4375") = .436" 15/32" (.46875") = .467" 1/2" (.5") = .496" 23/32 (.71875") = .715" 3/4" (.750") = .750" So... yeah. Worst deviation with those (admittedly cheap) calipers was .004". Frankly, if you can't live with a 4 thou difference on your carpentry, you're not buying these blocks to begin with. I wouldn't use them for precision machining, but for anything you're ever going to make out of wood... they're going to be just fine, buddy. Buy without worry. ... show more

  • Anodized aluminum, good sizing selection, carpenter triangle.
This set includes everything that you need for marking your carpentry projects. I got a carpenter triangle, flat pencil, sharpener and a set of marking blocks. Blocks are made from anodized aluminum. And cover major cutting wood sizes. When you need to mark multiple boards for cutting or routing, working with a ruler takes a lot of time. Alternatively you can just press the block of desired size against the wood and trace it with a pencil. With blocks it is also easy to ensure that lines are strictly parallel or perpendicular. Blocks came in a hard plastic case with slotted foam insert inside. ... show more

  • High quality Setup Blocks. Accesories also nice
I recently received the Smile Tools Setup Blocks, and here are my initial impressions. Build Quality: The setup blocks are made from lightweight aluminum, yet they feel very sturdy. Most blocks, except for the 1X2X3 block, are 1/2 inch thick on the non-measured side and 3 inches in length. Even the thinnest block (1/16th inch) feels solid and appears resistant to bending under moderate pressure. Design and Labeling: Each block is clearly labeled with its dimensions on both the measured and non-measured sides. A double-sided arrow indicates the measured side for easy identification. However, there are some exceptions: The three thinnest blocks (1/16, 3/32, and 1/8 inch) are only labeled on the measured side. The 1X2X3 block is labeled on all sides except the top and bottom. The labeling is laser-etched into the aluminum, ensuring durability against scratches—far superior to painted or inked labels that might wear off over time. Case and Accessories: The blocks come in a sturdy plastic case with foam inserts, keeping each block securely in place and well-organized. The kit also includes a speed square (also made of aluminum), a carpenter’s pencil, and a sharpener. While the pencil and sharpener are nice additions, they are not essential to the kit. Dimensional Accuracy: I measured the blocks using a digital caliper, and most were spot-on with the listed dimensions. However, two blocks (1/16 and 1/8 inch) were slightly off by 1/128th of an inch. While this deviation (0.008 inches) is outside the stated tolerance of ±0.001 inches, it is negligible for most practical applications. For my purposes, this minor discrepancy is not an issue. Speed Square: The included speed square has similar laser-engraved markings and dimensions. While it is lightweight and aligns well with my other measuring tools, it does flex slightly under moderate pressure. This raises some concerns about its durability under heavy use. Final Thoughts: Overall, this kit appears to be a high-quality set of setup blocks with useful accessories. The minor dimensional discrepancies are unlikely to affect most applications, and the thoughtful design and durable construction make this a valuable addition to my tool kit. I plan to update this review after further use, but so far, I’m pleased with the purchase and look forward to putting these tools to work. ... show more
