Isn’t an actual silhouette brand mat. But still works well.

Works great, everything sticks good and peels off even better. I haven't had any issue with these, definitely recommended.

  • Buy the mats. Check out my advice on using the mats and why you should not try to make your own.
Size: 1 Pack
These are replacement mats. I would like to pass along a couple items of advice regarding the mats. First of all, keep 2 on hand. Yes they are super tacky at first. Some say to stick it to something linty and that will decrease the stickyness. This does work but it also cuts the lifespan short. I read somewhere that someone had better luck removing paper from the mat by turning the mat/paper upsidedown and pulling the mat away from the paper rather than the common way of pulling the paper away from the mat. This helps immensely. Take it slow. This technique also keeps the paper from curling after it has been removed. If you are using standard weight paper, you may not be able to pull it off a new mat without it tearing. I recommend using an older mat for standard paper or a mat that you have decreased the tackyness with lint. Again, having 2 on hand is a great idea. When mats begin to get too much build up of lint and paper, lightly wash them with plain or soapy water and let them air dry. Another item of advice: To anyone who thinks about making your own to save $--just pony up and buy the mats from Amazon. I am always up for making something rather than buying it, but in this case I will never do it again. I guess some people have had luck making their own but I think it is a waste of time. I read up on how people have gotten the best results. I puchased cutting mats from the dollar store. Cheap. Good. They were 11" by 15", so I cut it to 12" by 11". I wanted to at least keep the width at 12" because lots of things that you cut are made in 12" width, like paper and vinyl.. Okay, not too bad so far. Then you have to buy painters tape. You don't need much but you still have to buy a whole roll and it's not too cheap. Then you have to buy repositionable spray glue. Also not cheap. You still have to buy the whole can. Then there is the matter of marking the mat. I tried with a marker and ruler--time consuming. Also tried printing out graph paper and gluing it to the back of the mat, but you either have to piece the graph paper together or you have to go to a print and copy place to get the same dimensions. Oh, also I forgot to mention that the repositionable glue. It doesn't work well at all. I tried 2 different brands-one sputtered out and wouldn't spray anymore even though it was mostly full-and, yes, I do turn it upside down to clear the nozzle after each use. Neither one of them had lasting tackyness. I had to keep respraying, which meant also retaping. All of this attempt at making my own mats resulted in subpar mats that were too small to fit a full sheet of 12"x12" scrapbook paper and the amount of $ I wasted didn't compare to the amount of time I wasted. Time that I could have spent working on cutting projects instead. ... show more

  • Great Mat But Struggles With Two Things +TIPS!
Size: 1 Pack
So, full disclosure, I've never used a cutting mat other than silhouette's, so while I can't speak to its merits in comparison to other brands, I've spent quite a bit of time with it and have a good feel for its strengths and weaknesses. I got my cameo as a Christmas present and the included mat lasted me a year of sporadic but heavy duty use. First up, the pros. For anyone just starting out, cutting mats in general are pretty straight forward, essentially a thin plastic mat with a layer of sticky (but not stuck type) adhesive of varying thickness and a wax backed sheet to keep it from getting dirty/messed up in storage. This mat has a fantastic grid pattern that matches up with your silhouette's included software so that there is no confusion as to where your design is on the sheet. The grid lines are thick and dark and easy to see and the adhesive layer is a pretty generous thickness. It feeds into the machine with ease and has a really incredible gripping power that holds materials in place without keeping too much stuck to the mat after cutting. The biggest con in my opinion is its difficulty with construction paper and vinyl in particular. I have used this machine and mat for EVERY material under the sun, from overhead projector sheets to vinyl to magnets to foil and everything in between. The majority lift off of the mat just fine but the construction paper has a tendency to leave a fine "fuzz" of paper on the mat that can noticeably reduce its effectiveness. The vinyl also has a tendency to get stuck a bit too tight, which can become a problem especially when you are trying to use transfer paper to keep everything aligned. Coincidentally the company also sells a specialized hook and scraper for this very purpose so...take that for what it's worth. Overall I would recommend this mat to anyone looking for one. It loses a star due to its difficulty with vinyl and construction paper (a big problem for you teachers out there!), but earns the rest for its Saturday backing, generous adhesive later and sheer durability. PROS: Durable construction, Generous adhesive layer, Strong but flexible backing, thick and easy to read grid lines, and easy of use with cutter CONS: Has difficulty releasing vinyl and construction paper, the latter of which can leave a "fuzz" of paper particles that can noticeably reduce the mat's efficacy. TIPS: If your mat begins to lose its stick, extend its life with spray adhesive available at any craft/hardware store, If you need to keep your vinyl pieces in line and either ran out or don't want to pay for the more expensive transfer paper, clear adhesive drawer liner (contact paper) works great and is most likely sold at your local 99cent store! ***Did you find my review helpful?
