It is a good reel for beginners, but a bit large for younger kids. You will want to do a few casts off the water to test the line. On the one I received, as soon as the line went slack it would twist into knots. I had to strip off about 30-40 yards of line to get down to usable line. If you're expecting a competent real, this is not it. I use it for small fish when I'm just messing around, I use it on a 5' ultra lite rod. The biggest problem with this real is the drag system, but I expected the quality. I have an older model, that finally gave out, but it was much better than this one. ... show more
