  • ADI-4 fit & finish and installation
Size: 4 inches
ADI-4 - well packed in a sturdy box; paint not chipped, vise not scuffed or dented. Somehow bigger than I thought it would be. For me, I wouldn't want any bigger. The jaws open more than 5" and align well. The vise doesn't have the best paint job ever, but covered where it should be and not covered where it shouldn't be. I didn't see any mechanical imperfections. I took it apart, wiped it down well, and used the base as a template for drilling the holes in my bench. Rotation locks are M10 x 1.5; I added M10 grade 8.8 washers to these. I checked the mounting tabs with one of the rotation lock bolts and liked that size, so I ended up with M10 x 1.5 x 90mm bolts (which is a 17mm head - awfully close to 11/16") to secure my vise. 80mm would have been better, maybe even 75mm, through my 1.75" bench. I used neoprene washers sandwiched by 2" x 3/8" galvanized washers top and bottom, between vise and bench on top. Added M10 grade 8.8 washers under the mounting bolts and above the nuts on the bottom. I took my time to position and clamp the base before I drilled. Remember, you want your fixed jaw either even with or slightly in front of the front edge of your bench so if you need to clamp something that hangs down, it will clear the edge of your bench. I used one of my bolts hunting through my drill index to find a good fit. With the base securely clamped and a sacrificial wood block clamped underneath to eliminate tear out, I drilled the back hole first and ran a bolt through it, then aligned the two front mounting tabs so a line between them is exactly parallel with the front of the bench, clamped again and drilled both front holes. Remember to put rotation lock plate in the base with the bolts in it; it won't quite fit with the mounting plate mounted (gee, how could he know that? ;) ). I greased the top of the base and its mate on the vise itself, the rails, and the main screw. Then I bolted it together and wiped it down. I got by with a little clamp-on vise that really didn't hold well for years because I didn't want to drill holes in my bench. What's the point of a nifty workbench if it doesn't have a vise on it? Now to put her to use. ... show more

  • I like this Yost so much that I will be buying another one soon.
Size: 4 inches
I went through decades of cheap made in China cast iron vices that are weak, sloppy, and prone to fracturing. I never actually had one crack on my but you know what, I wanted some quality. This one is made in Taiwan and is of solid forged steel. Yost is an old respected name. This is a real machinists vise. I overpaid for mine a bit have seen them as low as a hundred but still very happy. For a 4" vice the strength of this vice is incredible. I mounted mine over the lip of my workbench so I can clamp tall objects. So when the vice is closed it overhangs the edge of your bench. Don't quote me but I think the clamping strength of this Yost vice is about 8,000 pounds. It is easy, one finger operation. The first thing I did before ever using is was to remove the waxy, brown Cosmoline type shipping greast from all surfaces of the vice including the main screw underneath. Then I lubed the screw and all sliding surfaces with Magnalube G lube which in my opinion is the finest lubricant grease in existence. All moving or sliding parts were lubed and I also worked in a thin coat on the top anvil surface for corrosion resistance. I have had the vice for six months now and it is centerpiece of my workbench. I am seriously thinking about ordering a second one for the 41" Kobalt 8-drawer tool cart I just bought which in reality is a mobile workbench. I can't say enough about the quality of this vice I use it daily. For example I invert a portable belt sander and clamp it in the vice, turning it into a stationary belt sander. Lately I have been re-soling some favorite shoes I otherwise would through out it is great for clamping them after joining the sole to the shoe. Also the built in pipe clamp set of jaws underneath is great for cutting pipe. There is not play or slop in this mechanism whatsoever and that combined with the literally, one-finger operation makes this vice a joy to use. You would need a 5" vice at least of a lesser brand, and still not as useful as this Yost vice. This is really an industrial quality vice in a 4" size. Surprisingly compact for its power but make no mistake this is still a large vice. One last point maybe the quality of the paint is variable on these but mine looks just fine. I am not looking for a show car paint finish this is a vice. As long as the paint doesn't chip or have unpainted spots or big drippy gobs of paint on it, I am happy. The paint is on there smooth not perfect but more than good enough for the job. Nice looking BRIGHT red color much brighter than the Amazon photo. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • I purchased this yost ADI-5 vise because fireball tool tested this model along with several others
Size: 5 inches
I purchased this yost ADI-5 vise not only because I wanted a good quality ductile iron type over a cast iron type of vise also because on fireball tools youtube channel he tested this model along with many other brands and this thing proved to be well worth the money also this seller had it marked at a cheaper price due to the distressed box witch they had actually mentioned in there descriptions hyperlink witch was nice there where others at a little bit cheaper but those sellers had no description when clicking on there descriptions hyperlink where this seller did have a description for there's witch was really nice to see anyways the box was not that badly distressed and lastly there was only one of the two rubber rings for the handle to keep it attached to the vise witch was in no way a deal breaker because I intended to replace with metal collars that have set screws anyways ... show more
