  • Very good quality, well built . Low backlash
Size: 5"
Very good quality, well built. Low backlash, which I prefer. Two minor downsides: if you extend the jaw too far and the main acme screw disengages the internal threads, it can be quite difficult to re-thread, due the small ledges & chamfers that are cast into the fixed and moving jaw assemblies. Also: the jaw opens to about 4.2 inches, not 5 inches. However the "width" of the jaw is 5 inches, laterally. 4 mounting holes and 2 rotational locking levers make this a stout unit. • Great vise, but product does not match the description! *4/28/19 Update*
Size: 6"
If you do your research you'll see that the vise described and pictured here is actually not sold any more by Irwin. In fact, I can't really tell when it was sold, the models seem to evolve over the years. The vise I received DID match the model number (226306) which is, according to the box, a 6" Irwin "Record Series" workshop vise, which is an interesting combination of three of their lines. Amazon offered to take it back but the vise actually had some better features than the one pictured and it does exactly what I need it to do so I kept it. About the vise I received, the throat depth is 3 3/8", the useable capacity measures 5.5" (meaning space between the open jaws) and the overall length, closed, is about 14". It has the fully machined bearing surfaces which is a nice feature, unlike the vise pictured. The action is very smooth and the jaw stays nicely level and even as it moves in and out. I feel like I have good control over the pressure that is exerted. So, I am giving it four stars only because I still can't figure out what unicorn model number this thing is. It's actually a better vise than what is pictured but the specs provided here are not accurate at all. Feel free to reply/comment if you have questions or want other measurements. *4/28/19 Update* Looks like the pictures and product description are now correct. I'll go up to 5 stars, been very happy with this product. ... show more

  • Works for me.
Size: 6"
I just recieved this vise today, so I can't comment on it's durability. As others have said, it doesn't look like the one pictured, that was a pleasant suprise that I was hoping for. The moveable jaw of my previous vise was sloppy and the screw had a lot of backlash. This one seems to be much more rigid. The jaws maintain their alignment, and open and close with minimal movement of the screw. Also, the rotating/ locking mechanism has a serrated ring, rather than a smooth ring, enabling it to be locked in position with little effort. In retrospect, I probably should have bought one with a deeper throat capacity, I've needed that in the past. A "good" vise costs upward of $200, but this seems to be a good value for the money. This should be fine for my purposes, fabricating/repairing things at home. If I happen to find fault with it down the road, I will revise this review. Here it is, over two years later..still happy with this vise. I've beat on it, used "cheaters" to over-tighten the jaws...hasn't failed.... ... show more

  • Great Vice
Size: 6"
About 22 years ago a acquired a 4" vice. At the time the cost was right, and I felt it would meet my needs. What a mistake that was. I'm fairly handy in repairing and making things. Over the pas 20 years we built a cabin, and there where many times the 4" did not work. Said to say it took me until now to invest into a good vice. Don't have as much a need for it like in the past, but at my age when I need it, it's nice not having to struggle to get a job done. Why this vice? I spent over an hour reading reviews of the different 6" vices. To be honest, to me most all would meet my needs, but this one appealed to me more. I also liked the idea it was heavy duty. It was probably over kill, but for the additional cost I know it will handle anything I'll use it for. Con: I do not like the color blue. Recommend: I would recommend this vice. ... show more

  • Nice Vise
Size: 5"
Seems to be well made and sturdy.

  • Wish it was larger but I think it will do the trick.
Size: 6"
I still need to bolt this to my bench but it looks ok. For the price tag I can not complain to much about it not being to the same quality as the best bench vises I've seen. This is a decent size vise. Not to small for a basic garage vise but not as large as I would expect for some pretty heavy use. It doesn't feel cheap at all but only time will tell. For not his get's 5 stars. If it breaks, bends, or just seems to start to show some signs of low quality tools I'll be back to change my review. If you haven't heard from me than this is still holding up in my metal fab shop. ... show more

  • Stout design.
Size: 4"
Good strong vice. I was pleased with design of the rotational feature. Ive owned other vices where the two side bolts work against a single center pivot bolt which eventually breaks, always. This has a machined round base which the machined upper portion sits into, then a cross bar spans the base. The two side bolts go through the machined upper portion into the cross bar, clamping onto the inside of the circular machined base. Hard to describe, but i dont think it will have a catastrophic failure like the other design. It's a repairable design. ... show more
