Description

The Yost Vises all-steel utility combination pipe and bench vise with 360-degree swivel base mounts to a workbench to provide light-duty clamping action. The 360-degree swivel base adjusts the direction of the jaws for proper placement. Hand-tightening the two lock knobs on the base secures its position. The body is made of cast steel and has a flat portion that acts as a reinforced anvil and an additional work surface. The black paint on the body provides mild protection against corrosion. Both the top jaws and pipe jaws are grooved for enhanced grip. The top jaws are made of hardened steel and can be replaced when worn, and the pipe jaws are cast in place. The jaws draw closer together or farther apart by turning the vise handle clockwise or counterclockwise. The main screw that controls the jaws has been continuous rolled for high strength and is covered by a bar to protect it from damage. A rubber washer on either side of the handle prevents unwanted sliding when turning, and the balls on each end unscrew to enable replacement of the handle if worn.

  • Impressive
Style: Heavy Duty Size: 6"
I'm quite pleased with this 6" vise. The jaws align perfectly and the ACME lead screw operates flawlessly. Yost lists parts including the lead screw and lead screw nut which is totally awesome. The channel is welded to the front jaw whereas all of the ductile iron vises I've seen have the channel "built in" as part of the casting. While ductile iron is generally rated at the same 60,000 PSI I believe that structural cast steel is a wee bit more "flexible" so should be a bit more forgiving before "breakage" but may very well "dent" or even bend more easily. I'll be giving this quite a workout in the next couple of weeks and will update this review if I encounter any problems. One thing worth noting - the lead screw has no stop so will unscrew entirely. The lead screw nut is fairly long but I think anything past about a 5 3/4" jaw opening would result in too few teeth engaged to achieve full clamp load. More info would be needed to calculate that but Yost says this vises "Jaws able to withstand a load of up to 1600 inch pounds (133 ft lbs) without distortion of the vise or any components". It's not designed to replace a hydraulic press but I'll undoubtedly use it to replace U-joints in truck drive shafts at some point. I should play it safe and never use a cheater pipe on the handle but at some point I know I will because that's how I roll. ... show more

  • Nice craftsman vise
Style: Heavy Duty Size: 4"
To be clear I have not placed a bar or pipe in this vise and beat on it with a hammed to shape it. If you use one that way my review will not help. That said I really like this compact well designed vise. One point of the design that stands heads and shoulders above the comp, is that the base allows the vise to swivel 360 degrees. Hoodog! If you want to utilize your vise fully on a small work bench you need to be able to swing to either or both sides, so 360 degrees is important. It grips very well, sturdy so steady, finally the swivel lock is two, count 'em two, levers so one is on each side. I love that feature. I mounted this on a pre-built workbench that is 4 ft long and the size is a great match. You would not want anything larger. I did find, as are most new vises, that there was some dirty grease that needed wiping off and the main spindle threads were dry. I lubed up the threads it is smooth as silk. Do this, it will improve your overall experience. Being 66 yrs old I doubt I will be buying more in the future, but you should. Money well spent. ... show more

  • Sturdy with Harbor Freight fit and finish
Style: Heavy Duty Size: 6"
This vise is a real mixed bag - better than I feared but worse than I'd hoped, particularly with the Yost name attached. First off I'm not a pro, just a homeowner tired of "homeowner grade" tools that break. My first thought for a vise was to get a used one, but my area has a truly dire selection at this price point. After months of looking I decided to take a chance on something new. The good: this vise certainly seems sturdy. It's honestly overkill for me. My primary concern with this purchase was getting something that won't break. The world is rife with reports of cheap cast iron vises with casting voids or impurities that snap in half when you need them most. My hope with this vise was that the material (cast steel) and heft would prevent that. In person it does inspire confidence, although I haven't tested it's limits. The jaws on my example line up, which was a fear based on some reviews. Once clamped down, it holds fast and hard. The bad: fit and finish. So far removed from the online shots it's almost a different product. Absolutely none of the surfaces are what I would consider "machined". More like gone over once with a 40 grit grinder. There's burrs everywhere. The crinkle coat on my example had a couple of spots that got missed or rubbed off in transit. And the slop! There is slop simply everywhere slop could be. The main screw's retention pin is off by a mile, giving the handle slop. It wobbles and waggles when adjusting, because the fitment of the bar in the body is approximate at best (with no means of adjustment). The main screw binds up at 90% extension for reasons I can't quite diagnose. I took it apart and did my best to clean it up, but most of the issues are simply cast in. Honestly it's on par with stuff I've bought from Harbor Freight in terms of fit and finish. I guess you get what you pay for with this one, and not a penny more ... show more

  • Seems like great product

Haven’t used yet. But, was impressed with the sturdiness.

  • Not as beefy as I anticipated, but the fit and finish are both very good.
Style: Heavy Duty Size: 8"
This is a general purpose vise for my garage and it appears to be a good value. The size of the jaw opening for the price is better than many alternatives. I like the idea of steel vs. gray iron from a strength basis particularly in shock loading like hammering on a piece clamped in the jaws. Gray iron is strong, but does not understand flexing or bending - it behaves more like glass in these conditions; it is very tough right up until the time it shatters. The ideal solution would be ductile iron, but confirming they actually supplied ductile vs gray iron is a job for a test lab and not worth the effort or risk. Some people complained the Yost name was not on the vice, but I really don't care if it is or is not - no impact on function. ... show more

  • Anvil part is too soft
Style: Heavy Duty Size: 4"
So far this is very solid, but the anvil part shows marks and I can feel small indentations with my finger. I didn't expect that and didn't have that on my old cast iron vise I could pound on anything on my old Littlestown No 150 vise's anvil all day long and it shrugged it off, but not this one. Unfortunately the 150's jaws snapped off in the cold. ... show more

  • Owned since 2015
Style: Heavy Duty Size: 6"
I have enjoyed this vise over the years, especially when I added a set of the jaw inserts; Yost UP360 universal 6” jaw cover also sold here on Amazon. The vise is a smooth operating unit and the range of jaw opening is amazing. Also love the swivel base which really help hold things at the right angle over my bench, with cabinets over the benches this is really important. The only negative is there is absolutely no markings on the vise to tell one it’s a Yost and what model! I find this is a really issue because when I spend good money on an expensive vise I’d like at minimum the name on it! Heck, harbor freight has a name on theirs! ... show more
